The antioxidant activity of copper(II) (3,5-diisopropyl salicylate)4 and Its protective effect against streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus in rats

    No full text
Oxidative stress has been suggested as a potential contributor to the development of diabetic complications. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of a strong antioxidant copper complex against streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in animals. Out of four copper complexes used, copper(II) (3,5-diisopropyl salicylate)4 (Cu(II)DIPS) was found to be the most potent antioxidant-copper complex. Pretreatment with Cu(II)DIPS (5 mg/kg) twice a week prior to the injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) has reduced the level of hyperglycemia by 34 % and the mortality rate by 29 %. Injection of the same dosage of the ligand 3,5-diisopropyl salicylate has no effect on streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia. The same copper complex has neither hypoglycemic activity when injected in normal rats nor antidiabetic activity when injected in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The protective effect of Cu(II)DIPS could be related to its strong antioxidant activity compared to other copper complexes median effective concentration (MEC) = 23.84 μg/ml and to Trolox MEC = 29.30 μg/ml. In addition, it reduced serum 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage, by 29 %. This effect may explain why it was not effective against diabetic rats, when β Langerhans cells were already destroyed. Similar protective activities were reported by other antioxidants like Trolox

Sayre,Edward:This paper presents user's communication behavior in a pseudo same-room videoconferencing named “Being Here System,” in comparison with a conventional videoconferencing. The system extracts the remote person's figure and superimposes it on the local site's front view in a large display in real-time. This method makes the local person feel as if the remote person was before him/her in his/her spatial environment. To investigate the influence of the system on user’s communication, the recorded video of the system evaluation experiment was analyzed. This revealed that the system significantly affected user's communication behavior such as turn taking, speech overlap, and gaze direction

Khateeb,Emad:Dining with a remote person requires that both participants are available at the same time to eat together. Because of time-zone differences and other such contingent factors, this condition can often be hard to fulfill. One solution may lie in time-shifted communication. A person can enjoy a meal while watching an earlier recorded video of a remote person’s dining. However, in a time-shifted environment, achieving dining synchronization is a challenge. In this research, we propose a time-shifted tele-dining system (KIZUNA) enabling people to enjoy a meal together in a virtual environment. The system adapts the displayed video’s playback speed to the difference in dining progress between the local and remote person. This is likely to enhance communication and increase enjoyment while dining. A validation experiment revealed that the proposed KIZUNA adaptation method enhanced diners’ communication behavior, and significantly enhanced the perceived presence of the remote person, in comparison with conventional time-shifted tele-dining. This result suggests a promising future for the KIZUNA system

This article focuses on the Palestinian political system, its current crisis, its roots, and its future. The current crisis reached a climax in 2007 with the armed clash between Palestinian factions. The historical roots of the conflict, however, go much deeper. They are inherently connected to the legacy passed on to the Palestinian Authority. The current crisis of the Palestinian Authority has been a frequent subject of constitutional debates. While the key role of the Basic Law remains indisputable, this written, constitution-like text seems to be a part of the problem, rather than of the solution. In this article I will adopt a positivist approach to constitutions only to suggest its deficiency whenever it leads to formalism in interpreting written constitutions. Instead, Isuggest using different paradigms that contribute to a better understanding of the role of written constitutions whenever conflicts between political actors are threatening the same political structure that made it possible for a political system to exist in the first place.Palestine - Politics and government - 21st centuryGaza Strip - Politics and government - 21st centur

    Analysing Palestinian mathematics textbooks

MORGAN,CANDIA:The project reported here aims to produce an analysis of Palestinian school mathematics textbooks, focusing on the nature of the mathematics portrayed in the texts and of the mathematical activity expected of students. The academic collaboration enabled by the project includes comparison with a sample of English textbooks. We share some results of an early analysis of two extracts of textbooks and discuss the nature of the mathematics that students are expected to experience
