Integration of GIS and perception assessment in the creation of needsbased urban parks in Ramallah, Palestine
In Palestinian cities, urban parks are rare and their size is limited, comprising roughly
0.5 m2 per person in Palestine’s fastest growing city, Ramallah. Prior studies indicate
that conventional planning, zoning, and standards-based approaches do not fully meet
people’s needs for parks in urban settings. Hence, a needs-based approach was implemented in this study. A survey instrument was administered to a representative stratified
sample composed of planners, professionals, and academics. The questionnaire was
successfully administered to more than six hundred respondents (n= 650) and the
results divulged a number of important points that will aid in future park and green
space location, creation, and park utility. These findings included (a) overwhelming
(perceived) need for more parks provided with facilities like playgrounds, water features, and relaxing areas; (b) a perception of uneven distribution of parks and facilities
in urban settings; and (c) an increase in accessibility via roads and walking paths
The influence of the Arab springs on the Palestinian question

New mixed ligand zinc(II) complexes based on the antiepileptic drug sodium valproate and bioactive nitrogen-donor ligands. Synthesis, structure and biological properties
Starting from the precursor [Zinc Valproate complex] (1), new mixed ligand zinc(II) complexes of valproic acid and nitrogen-based ligands, formulating as, [Zn(valp)22,9-dmphen] (2), [Zn2(valp)4(quin)2] (3), [Zn(valp)2(2-ampy)2] (4), and [Zn(valp)2(2-ampic)2] (5) (valp = valproate, 2,9-dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, quin = quinoline, 2-ampy = 2-aminopyridine, 2-ampic = 2-amino-6-picoline) were synthesized and characterized using IR, (1)H NMR, (13)C{(1)H} NMR and UV-Vis spectrometry. The crystal structures of complexes 2, 3 and 4 were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complexes were also evaluated for their anti-bacterial activity using in-vitro agar diffusion method against three Gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis) and three Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis) species. Complex 2 showed considerable activity against all tested microorganisms and the effect of complexation on the anti-bacterial activity of the parent ligand of 2 was also investigated. The anti-bacterial activity of 2,9-dmphen against Gram-negative bacteria was enhanced upon complexation with zinc valproate. On the other hand, complexes 1 and 3 showed weak inhibition activity against the tested species and complexes 4 and 5 didn't show any activity at all. Two methods were used for testing the inhibition of ferriprotoporphyrinIX bio-mineralization: a semi-quantitative micro-assay and a previously self-developed quantitative in-vitro method. Both were used to study the efficiency of these complexes in inhibiting the formation of the Malaria pigment which considered being the target of many known anti-malarial drugs such as Chloroquine and Amodiaquine. Results showed that the efficiency of complex 2 in preventing the formation of β-Hematin was 80%. The efficiency of Amodiaquine as a standard drug was reported to give 91%
Characterizing demand functions with price dependent income
We consider the demand function of consumer whose wealth depends on prices. This extends the two traditional cases when the consumer holds a goods bundle, so that his wealth depends linearly on prices, and when his wealth is prescribed, independently of prices. We extend the Slutsky relations to this general case, and we show that they fully characterize the demand functions, as in the traditional case
Quality management practices and their relationship to organizational performance
The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent of total quality management (TQM) practices implemented in Palestinian hospitals and their relationship to organizational performance using the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria.
The results showed that TQM constructs used in this study are positively related to hospital performance and for the most part the relationship was significant; they were capable of explaining a significant portion of variance in performance. Three elements were found to be strongly significant predictors of performance - people management, process management, and information and analysis.
The study showed that there are certain areas where administrators or managers need to focus on should they aspire for better performance. The constructs used in this study can be used to assess the implementation of quality practices and highlight areas for movement.
This paper provided practitioners, administrators, and academics with a fresh perspective on quality management practices and their impact on organizational performance. It also served as a foundation for future initiatives and programs aimed at improving quality in hospitals
The EMNLP 2014 Workshop on Arabic natural language processing
October 25, 2014, Doha, QatarThere has been a lot of progress in the last 15 years in the area of Arabic Natural Language Processing
(NLP). In particular, the TIDES, GALE, and BOLT programs provided a significant boost to Arabic
NLP, both in generating new language and speech resources on a large scale, and in advancing the stateof-the-art
in morphological processing, parsing, named entity recognition, information retrieval, speech
recognition, and machine translation. The substantial investment done through these projects reflect the
fact that the Middle East continues to grow in its political and economic importance. We also observe that
countries in the Middle East invest substantially into higher education and into building an ecosystem,
which fosters new research initiatives. This creates the hope that our own research field, NLP, and
especially Arabic NLP will continue to grow, will continue to attract students both in the region and in
top international universities, and that new job opportunities will open up not only in the well established
language service providers, but also through start-ups offering innovative solution
