Projected Statewide Traffic Forecast Parameters using Artificial Neural Networks

    No full text
Design-hour volume (DHV) and directional DHV (DDHV) are important traffic forecast parameters for both planning and operational studies. They are used for roads and intersection design and operational analysis. Estimating these two parameters requires a record of hourly volumes for every hour in a year. Therefore, permanent traffic counters are usually used to keep a record of those hourly volumes. The use of permanent counters faces several challenges because of adjacent construction activities and hardware or communication failure. These challenges result in the missing part of the collected data. Moreover, estimating DHV and DDHV based on short-term traffic counts is often needed. In this research, an artificial intelligence approach is used to estimate DHV and DDHV for roadways with different functional classifications. An artificial neural network model, which utilises historical records of annual average daily traffic along with other road characteristics, such as number of lanes and functional classification, is developed. Results show that the model was able to achieve a highly accurate and reliable DHV and DDHV estimates

Hotspot Identification on Protein Surfaces Using Probe-Based MD Simulations: Successes and Challenges

    No full text
Molecular Dynamics (MD) based computational co-solvent mapping methods involve the generation of an ensemble of MD-sampled target protein conformations and using selected small molecule fragments to identify and characterize binding sites on the surface of a target protein. This approach incorporates atomic-level solvation effects and protein mobility. It has shown great promise in the identification of conventional competitive and allosteric binding sites. It is also currently emerging as a useful tool in the early stages of drug discovery. This review summarizes efforts as well as discusses some methodological advances and challenges in binding site identification process through these co-solvent mapping methods

Optimal Empirical-Markovian approach for assessment of potential pavement rehabiliation strategies at the project level

    No full text
An optimal Empirical-Markovian approach is presented for the assessment of potential rehabilitation strategies as applied to flexible pavement at the project level. A simplified empirical model is proposed to predict the heterogeneous transition probabilities associated with rehabilitated pavement based on the corresponding values associated with original pavement, future traffic loading, and modified structural capacity. Therefore, the performance of rehabilitated pavement can directly be controlled by the modified structural capacity. The modified structural capacity associated with a particular rehabilitation strategy is defined using the modified layer coefficients with the corresponding modified structural numbers are used in the empirical model to predict the relevant heterogeneous transition probabilities. These probabilities are then used to estimate the annual distress ratings associated with each potential rehabilitation strategy for a specified analysis period. The optimal assessment of potential rehabilitation strategies is carried out using the cost-effectiveness ratio defined as the ratio of the life-cycle average distress rating to the life-cycle cost. The life-cycle cost can include cost items such as initial construction cost, routine maintenance cost, and major rehabilitation cost. The optimal rehabilitation strategy is the one associated with the highest cost-effectiveness ratio. The presented case study has indicated the effectiveness of the proposed optimal approach in developing and yielding dependable optimal rehabilitation strategies

Rhetorical Criticism in Analyzing Literary Texts
