“We Are in This Together” Common Group Identity Predicts Majority Members’ Active Acculturation Efforts to Integrate Immigrants
Full text linkAlthough integration involves a process of mutual accommodation, the role of majority groups is often downplayed to passive
tolerance, leaving immigrants with the sole responsibility for active integration. However, we show that common group
identity can actively involve majority members in this process across five studies. Study 1 showed that common identity
positively predicted support of integration efforts; Studies 2 and 3 extended these findings, showing that it also predicted
real behavior such as monetary donations and volunteering. A decrease in modern racism mediated the relations across
these studies, and Studies 4 and 5 further demonstrated that it indeed mediated these effects over and above acculturation
expectations and color-blindness, which somewhat compromised integration efforts. Moreover, the last two studies also
demonstrated that common, but not dual, groups motivated integration efforts. Common identity appears crucial for securing
majorities’ altruistic efforts to integrate immigrants and, thus, for achieving functional multiculturalism
Miracles are not violations of the laws of nature because the laws do not entail regularities
Full text linkSome have tried to make miracles compatible with the laws of nature by re-defining them as something other than interventions. By contrast, this article argues that although miracles are divine interventions, they are not violations of the laws of nature. Miracles are also not exceptions to the laws, nor do the laws not apply to them. The laws never have exceptions, they never are violated or suspended. They probably are necessary and unchangeable. They apply to divine interventions too. We need to reconsider not miracles but laws. The main claim of this article is that laws of nature do not entail regularities, and that therefore miracles do not violate the laws. We need a new theory of the laws of nature, the tendency theory

Damit verbinden sich beachtliche Vorteile und ebenso beachtliche Bedenken, die gegeneinander abzuwägen sind. Der damit eingerichtete Austausch akademischer Arbeitsergebnisse im Rahmen privatwirtschaftlicher Regelungen ist mit dem herkömmlichen Selbstverständnis von Universitäten schwer vereinbar. Die Festschreibung einiger Protokollvorgaben im digitalen Datenverkehr, eine weitblickende Produktentwicklung von Apple Inc. und deren strategisch geglückte Markterschließung haben iTunes U zu einem zentralen Umschlagplatz für Lehrmittel im

Full text linkWittgenstein's Tractatus does, at a first glance, employ a Platonic strategy, dividing the universe of discourse into two realms, with an atemporal, rationally transparent order determining a lower stratum. On closer inspection the Tractatus' „prototypes“ (Urbilder) come surprisingly close to Platonic ideas. The Wittgensteinian metaphor of a ladder may therefore profitably be compared to Plato's parable of ascent from a cave, the crucial difference being that Wittgenstein's image does not provide a return option. Feedback between the ideal and the real is, on the other hand, an essential ingredient of the success of Plato-style progress. The later Wittgenstein, consequently, rejects the metaphor of a ladder in favor of what might be called the trouble-free plateau of the ordinary. Yet, this is not his only lesson. He also considers a kind of reverse Platonism with the philosopher, confused about the way things are, in need of redemption

Zwei relativ bescheidene Beispiele aus der frühen Zeit des Internets können als Beleg dienen. Das eine ist CDDB, ein Archiv zur Erfassung der Metadaten von Audio-CDs, also von Musikernamen, Produktions- und Songtitel, Dauer, Genre etc. Solange man einzelne Platten oder auch CDs in Geräte einlegte, waren diese Informationen eng mit den Handgriffen zum Abspielen der Musik verbunden. Full text linkThe study took a novel experimental approach from the field of cognitive linguistics to quantitatively describe the impact of culture on the use of mobile information and communication technology (ICT) in the context of peace and conflict. Beginning with the hypothesis that ICT reflects a mono-cultural perspective for collecting and organizing information, this study tested how a failure to adapt at a cognitive level resulted in distorted narratives. This has implications for democratic participation and data aggregation initiatives for policy-makers. Findings also present avenues for software development and security. Dialogue on Alternating Consciousness: From Perception to Infinities and Back to Free Will
Full text linkCan we lead back consciousness, reality, awareness, and free will on a single basic structure without giving up any of them? Can the universe exist in both real and individual ways without being composed of both? This metaphysical dialogue founds consciousness and freedom of choice on the basis of a new reality concept that also includes the infinite as far as we understand it. Just the simplest distinction contains consciousness. It is not static, but a constant alternation of perspectives. From its entirety and movement, however, there arises a freedom of choice being more than reinterpreted necessity and unpredictability. Although decisions ultimately involve the whole universe, they are free in varying degrees also here and now. The unity and openness of the infinite enables the individual a creativity that directly and indirectly enters into all other individuals without impeding them. A contrary impression originates only in a narrowed awareness. But even the most conscious and free awareness can neither anticipate all decisions nor extinguish individuality.
