    Validation of a Single-Item Stem for Collective Efficacy Measurement in Sports Teams

    The validity and reliability of an operational stem for single-item collective efficacy measurement were examined across three studies in sport. Study 1 used a cross-sectional design with team sports participants to assess the stem's validity by examining the ability of the Collective Efficacy Questionnaire for Sports (CEQS), Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ), and previous performance (win %) to predict single-item collective efficacy scores. Total CEQS scores predicted single-item scores (β = .69), with the CEQS Ability (β = .51) and Persistence (β = .15) subscales the only significant predictors of single-item score. Previous performance (β = .41) and three GEQ dimensions, Individual Attractions to the Group-Task (β = .18), Group Integration-Task (β = .22), and Group Integration-Social (β = .16), were also significant predictors of single-item collective efficacy. Study 2 examined the validity and reliability of the stem using an intervention with team sports participants in a laboratory-based design. The single-item measure demonstrated high concordance (pre-intervention; r = .53, post-intervention; r = .73) and reliability (r = .77, .62) with CEQS scores. Study 3 assessed the validity and reliability of the stem using an intervention with team sports participants in a field-based design. The single-item measure reported high concordance (pre-intervention; r = .74, post-intervention; r = .69) and reliability (r = .88, .87) with CEQS scores. The studies support the stem as valid and reliable for single-item collective efficacy measurement with team sports players

    Using routine activity theory to inform a conceptual understanding of the geography of fire events

    The cost of fire events can be devastating in human, emotional and financial terms. There is a growing realisation that geographical techniques can be used in cross-disciplinary approaches to gain an understanding of potential causation factors associated with such events. Despite this, the theoretical frameworks within which such research efforts are often couched have received relatively scant attention. Contrast this with literature concerned with the geography of crime where the application of routine activity theory in particular has been to the fore in studies concerned with providing a sound conceptual basis to understanding spatial and temporal analysis of crime events. This paper demonstrates the application of routine activity theory to understand the geography of fire events and identify ignition situations incited through behavioural regularities.     Relationships between force-time characteristics of the isometric mid-thigh pull and dynamic performance in professional rugby league players

    There is considerable conflict within the literature regarding the relevance of isometric testing for the assessment of neuromuscular function within dynamic sports. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between isometric measures of force development and dynamic performance. Thirty-nine professional rugby league players participated in this study. Forty-eight hours after trial familiarization, participants performed a maximal isometric midthigh pull, with ;120-130- bend at the knee, countermovement jump (CMJ), and a 10-m sprint. Force-time data were processed for peak force (PF), force at 100 milliseconds (F100ms), and peak rate of force development (PRFD). Analysis was carried out using Pearson's product moment correlation with significance set at p < 0.05. The PF was not related to dynamic performance; however, when expressed relative to body weight, it was significantly correlated with both 10-m time and CMJ height (r = 20.37 and 0.45, respectively, p < 0.05). The F100ms was inversely related to 10-m time (r = 20.54, p < 0.01); moreover, when expressed relative to body weight, it was significantly related to both 10-m time and CMJ height (r = 20.68 and 0.43, p < 0.01). In addition, significant correlations were found between PRFD and 10-m time (r = 20.66, p < 0.01) and CMJ height (r = 0.387, p < 0.01). In conclusion, this study provides evidence that measures of maximal strength and explosiveness from isometric force-time curves are related to jump and sprint acceleration performance in professional rugby league player

    The development of Chinese metropolitan planning management systems: with particular focus upon governance

    This thesis examines Chinese metropolitan planning management system taking lessons from its past as well as current development and involving recommendations for its future improvement. It investigates the historical and current developments in the metropolitan planning management systems and also makes recommendations about how to improve the future systems. It aims to find potential ways which can make the Chinese metropolitan planning management system work well and move the metropolitan planning management to good governance. This thesis also constructs a theoretical framework from the perspective of decentralization, focusing upon the change of relationships between the Chinese government, market and society, to gain an in-depth insight of changes in the development of Chinese planning management system since 1978. It considers a case study approach to analyze the current situation of the metropolitan planning management system. It employs a qualitative research methodology that comprises of questionnaire and interviews with governmental officials, planners and experts, to study the behaviors of different actors involved in the core operations of planning management system, and investigate relationships between the government, market and society in order to examine the fundamental institutional factors producing the problems. In the end, on basis of the global public management paradigm transformation and in view of the overall trend of the governance transition, it makes recommendations regarding an improved metropolitan planning management system in China. It identifies factors influencing the Chinese metropolitan planning management system. It argues that the planning management system changes with the administrative system. The administrative management system reform has become the most direct and fundamental motive for promoting the transition of planning management system. It scrutinizes the problems in metropolitan planning management system. It argues that inadequate modern bureaucracy is the primary characteristic of current planning management systems, which is inducing problems in the metropolitan planning management system. It argues that the focus of Chinese metropolitan planning management system reform is the allocation of power and responsibility among different interest groups. It argues that reform of the metropolitan planning management system needs continuous improvement and has to surpass the bureaucracy moderately. The essence of metropolitan planning management system reform is rationalizing relationships between different levels of governments as well as relationships between the government, market and society. It insists that improved metropolitan planning management system in China needs support from other governance tools

Family history—genetics and the shared environment—is a significant risk factor for cancer as well as other common diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. A good understanding of family health history should increasingly be used to personalise health messages and promote healthy lifestyles. The Let’s Talk About Genes project explored whether it was feasible and acceptable to engage young children in Wales with family history as it relates specifically to cancer, so they increase their cancer genetics literacy over time and become more aware of general health issues that relate to cancer.Tenovus Cancer Car

    Optimal operation of a hydrogen refuelling station combined with wind power in the electricity market

    An optimisation routine has been developed to analyse the performance of hydrogen refuelling stations combined with wind power operating in electricity markets. This optimisation routine includes the minimum turn down ratio of the electrolyser in its formulation resulting in a mixed integer nonlinear programming optimisation. The optimisation routine has been used to analyse the performance of a hydrogen refuelling station located at the advanced manufacturing park in Rotherham, UK. The performance of the optimisation routine for various scenarios of hydrogen demand and wind power has been assessed. This includes the effect of operating the electrolyser to reduce wind curtailment in a grid constrained scenario. It is found that the optimisation routine is capable of increasing profits when operating in the market, but this is dependent on various factors such as the level of hydrogen demand and wind power.Study supported by State Grid Research Project “Study on Key Technology of Hydrogen Energy Storage and its Implementation in Renewable Energy Integration” (SGRI-DL-71-14-012).     Hydrogen is believed to be an important energy storage vector to fully exploit the benefit of renewable and sustainable energy. There was a rapid development of hydrogen related technologies in the past decades. This paper provides an overall survey of the key technologies in hydrogen energy storage system, ranging from hydrogen production using both fossil fuels, biomass and electricity generated from renewable power sources, to hydrogen storage in both pressurised gas, liquefied and material-based methods, as well as associated electricity generation technologies using hydrogen.     Public Sector Supply Chain Management: A Triple Helix Approach to Aligning Innovative Environmental Initiatives

    This paper argues that in order to deliver greater levels of sustainable performance, environmental strategy should be addressed at the supply chain level and not just at the level of the individual organisation. It demonstrates the similarities between the environmental statements of companies in both the private and public sectors and proposes that public sector organisations, by virtue of their considerable spend with private sector organisations, are in a powerful position to encourage and support environmental initiatives throughout their supply chains. Drawing upon Triple Helix Theory the paper discusses the importance of unifying the efforts of government, industry and academia in order to identify and operationalise innovative thinking in economies. It explores the roles of public and private sector organisations along with universities in developing environmental strategies and practices within supply chains. Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are discussed and the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is identified as a potential mechanism for structuring and reporting the collaborative environmental improvement performance of supply chains
