    Index to a letter from Louis F. Bisdet to Professor E. R. Guiler describing his memory of Professor Flynn, who lived in the same boarding house as Bisdet, Pressland House, Melville Street, in 1931. Prof. Flynn was a fine, well groomed man, always wore a black bowler hat. His wife, who he never mentioned, was admired by the ladies of Hobart. His son Erroll, was often a great worry to him.     Arthur Gordon Lyne (1919-1991), graduated BSc at the University of Tasmania in 1950, PhD in 1958 and DSc in 1974. His speciality was the study of skin and hair growth. After a short period of study at Cambridge University, he was research zoologist at the University of Tasmania 1952-1953 and then joined the CSIRO in NSW. Includes his three original degree diplomas (1950-1974), offprints of his publications (1951-1964), and reviews of his "Biology of Skin and Hair Growth symposium papers" (1965).     The Glebe Theatre Players were established early in 1947 under the aegis of Joyce Eyre (Mrs Phillips), a lecturer in the Department of English. David Mattingley was the Secretary and organiser for the first three years. "The primary aim is to help students obtain a more intimate knowledge of the plays they study ... although it is open to all" (Union Handbook 1949). Plays produced in the first three years were: Ibsen's "A Doll's House", G.B. Shaw's "Major Barbara", Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and "The Taming of the Shrew", Galsworthy's "Strife", Shakespeare's "Macbeth", Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus" (play reading), J.M. Barrie's "The Admirable Crichton", Ben Jonson's "Volpone", Shakespeare's "King Lear", G.B. Shaw's "Arms and the Man", T. Dekker's "The Shoemaker's Holiday", Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest". Regular players included David Mattingly, Christobel Shepley (later Mrs Mattingley), Rex Batt, Cynthia Waters, Geoff Haward, Oliver Heyward, Douglas Lamb, Pierre Hutton, Peter Sprent, Vona Rackliff, Betty Parker, Malcolm McRae, Ken Axton, Jeff Scrivener, Peter Cranswick, Nigel Heyward, and Robert Sharman.     Professor Alan Burn Engineering Department Index: University of Tasmania Collection

    Professor Alan Burn (1889-1959) B.E. (Syd.), M.Sc.(Tas.), LLD. (Lond.), M.I.E. (Aust.) was Professor of Engineering 1919-1955, Vice Chancellor 1945-1949 and Acting V.C. April to June 1953. His research included studies of aerofoil theory, vortex wind tunnel, hydraulics, centrifugal and axial pumps, and stress. UT35 includes papers, lecture notes, reports, collection of lantern and kodachrome slides illustrating hydro-electric machinery. Deposited by his widow Mrs Olive Burn 1970. The papers in the UT467 collection were transferred from the basement of the Engineering Building in 1986, and include Professor Burn's research notes 1920-1955, comprising a box of 17 folders.     University Blazer c 1930 Index: University of Tasmania Collection

    University Blazers c 1930. These were the property of Donald George Rockcliff of Sassafras (d. 1981). He matriculated from Devonport State High School in 1926 and gained his B.Sc. in 1932 and B.E. in 1933. He was a member of the T.U. Rifle Club, shooting the fourth highest score in the Inter-Varsity match in 1932, for which he was awarded a full blue. He was also a member of the Combined Universities Rifle Team against Victoria in March 1932 and was thus one of the first entitled to wear ‘A.U.S.A.’ on his blazer badge. In 1934 he broke a record in the I.V. match in Hobart which Tasmania University Rifle Club won. For photographs of the T.U.R.C. teams see UT 367/1-7. The Tasmania University Rifle Club was formed in 1927 and came third in the Home and Home contest that year. Includes two blazers and a rifle club hat. Deposited BY Mrs E.M.     This research project by LJ Wood and TR Lee from the University Department of Geology has the full title of "The Tasman Bridge Collapse and its Effects on Metropolitan Hobart". This collection includes two samples each of the surveys/questionnaires for eight Hobart regions; two folders of the researchers' correspondence and working notes; five published reports; a summary report entitled "Three years of Disruption: Some effects and consequences of the Tasman Bridge Collapse"; and an article published in the journal "Progress in Planning".
