In response to the exhibition Journeys at Plimsoll Galleries I would like to take up Paul Zika’s suggestion that my work since the beginning has been a “journey of my body”.
Recently I was asked to write on some new work that I am developing and in conclusion I stated: My body, as practice, has been empathetic host, critical trickster and active agent in challenging representations of the female body.
I would therefore like to make a ‘journey’ through aspects of my practice that highlight these notions of the body/my body as M-E-D-I-U-M. I stress this word because it has playful connotations from the supernatural to the ordinary but mostly it suggests for me a sense of transmission or passage; a liminal site that is fluid and adaptable.
Julie Rrap has been a major figure in Australian contemporary art for thirty years. Since the mid-1970s, she has worked with photography, painting, sculpture, performance and video in an on-going project concerned with representations of the body. She lived and worked in Europe between 1986 -1994.
Rrap's works are held in every major public collection in Australia as well as many corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas. She currently exhibits with Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney and Arc 1 Gallery, Melbourne

Get PDFThe Hobart Maternal & Dorcas Society was formed in 1835 by a number of charitable ladies, firstly "to assist married women during the time of their confinement" and secondly "to extend relief to the poor, as funds admit, especially to children who may be in want of suitable clothing to attend the enfant, Sabbath or other schools". Boxes or bags were prepared containing clothing and blankets for the baby and mother, and soap and a bible. The bags were lent for a month, but food and other comforts were distributed as funds allowed. After the maternity Bonus Act of 1912 the Society more or less went into
abeyance, except for special cases, and in 1949 it was finally wound up.
A brief history of the Society by W H Hudspeth was published in 1942 and is with the records

Get PDFJohn Walker was a miller, brewer and merchant who arrived
in Hobart in 1822. He built a flour mill at Richmond and
later in Launceston. He bought the Government flour mill
in Barrack Street, Hobart. He was also a general merchant
and banker and acted as liquidator to the Derwent Bank,
wound up Governor Arthur's estates, and acted as trustee
to others. He was an elder of the Scots Presbyterian
Church. Includes Walker Mill records RS.2
