“I try to emphasise three elements in my work: wisdom, knowledge & humour. I believe people need wisdom to choose from the many different cultural traditions that confront us everyday; knowledge is the key to open our minds to the diversity of the world; and humour is necessary to comfort our hearts. I also like to tell stories in my work”.
Born 1957, Beijing, China. In 1989, three years after graduating from the Department of Fine Arts at Beijing Capital University, Guan Wei came to Australia to take up an artist-in-residence at the Tasmanian School of Art. He was invited to undertake two further residencies: one at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (1992), the other at the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University (1993). Since then he obtained many grants, including Australia Council’s grant for Greene St New York studio in 2003, Cite International des Art Paris in 2007 & Fellowship in 2008-2009. In 2008 he set up a studio in Beijing. Now he lives & works in both Beijing & Sydney.
Guan Wei’s work has a profoundly felt, if implicitly ironic, moral dimension. In their complex symbolic form, his subjects potently embody current social & environmental dilemmas. They are equally the product of his rich cultural repertory of symbols & his informed socio-political awareness & art-historical knowledge.
Wei has held 45 solo exhibitions, including, most recently, ‘Spellbound’ 2011 at He Xiang Ning OCT Contemporary Art Centre Shenzhen; ‘Cloud in the sky, Water in the bottle’ Shumu Art Space, Beijing 2010. In 2006, Craftsman House published Guan Wei’s monograph. He has won several awards, including the 2002 Sir John Sulman Prize

James Newitt (Art Forum)
No full textJames Newitt is currently Head of the Visual Communication studio at the Tasmanian School of Art. He creates work through social engagement, predominantly using strategies such as interview, observation, facilitation and subtle direction. By engaging in particular social, political and environmental situations, James produces videos, photographs and installations that explore the spaces between individual and collective identity; memory and history; documentary and fiction; as well as subjective and objective experience.
Since graduating with a PhD from the Tasmanian School of Art in 2007, James has undertaken an Australian Council for the Arts international residency in Los Angeles. He has exhibited nationally in exhibitions such as the 2008 Biennial of Australian Art, as well as internationally in Berlin and Croatia. In 2010 he was invited to participate in the prestigious Primavera exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. He has been awarded prizes such as the 2009 Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Contemporary Art Award and in 2010 he won the City of Hobart Art Prize in the digital media category.
James will be speaking about his experiences of continuing an arts practice after finishing a PhD, as well as reflecting on recent international exhibitions and travels which were supported by the Qantas Foundation Award

Get PDFThe establishment of a Turkish Bath Company for Hobart Town was promoted at a public meeting held on 25 October 1866. 200 shares off5 each were sold. The chairman of the Directors was Alfred Kennerley, later succeeded by Henry Llewellyn Roberts. The first secretary was W.G.Elliston. Land at the corner of Harrington and Collins Street ( south side) was purchased from Mr Adcock for l400 pounds in 1867 and adjacent land with two houses purchased from Moses Cohen in 1874. The building was designed by Henry Hunter and
with fittings etc., cost about 1500 pounds. The baths were opened to the public in September 1868 (two days a week for ladies and 4 days for men). The company was wound up in 1892 and the premises sold. The buildings were finally pulled down in 1933. Royal Society RS.
