George Meredith correspondence Index: Royal Society Collection
George Meredith (l777 - 1856) was born near Birmingham, U.K. & served as a
Lieutenant in the Marines until 1806 when he retired on half pay. He arrived
in Hobart in March 1821 with his second wife Mary (nee Evans, d. 1842) and
five children, and settled at Oyster Bay on the East Coast. Meredith established
grazing stock and crops and also a flour mill and tannery at the Meredith River.
In 1827 they moved to Belmont, a mile inland and in 18.36 Meredith built a new
home, Cambria, near their original settlement. Includes letters to his wife describing the journey via Prossers Plains and Richmond. - RS 3
Size and characteristics of aggregations of moon jellyfish (Aurelia SP.) in Tasmania, Australia
Moon jellyfish, Aurelia spp., are found in marine and estuarine environments worldwide and can concentrate into dense aggregations within enclosed or semi-enclosed water bodies (e.g., Lucas et al. 1997, Purcell et al. 2000). Aggregations are often promoted by physical properties of the water body in which they occur and are commonly believed to facilitate sexual reproduction, rather than act as a defence against predation ortargetingfoodsources (Graham etal. 2001, Lucas 2001). The presence of!arge-scale aggregations of medusae, as a function offavourable conditions, has substantial ecological and economic consequences (Purcell et al. 2007). The distribution, abundance and life history characteristics of the genus Aurelia are highly variable spatially and temporally (e.g., Schneider & Brehrends 1994, Lucas et al. 1997). The pelagic medusa stage generally occurs seasonally and lives for several months (Lucas & Williams 1994, Miyake et al. 1997), but in some populations, medusae will live for 12 months or more (Kinoshita et al. 2006). Aurelia medusae are voracious feeders and are capable of modifying the seasonal composition and abundance of the planktonic community (Schneider & Brehrends 1994, Lucas et al. 1997). Secondary effects of high grazing pressure include increased phytoplankton biomass through reduced grazing pressure by copepods (Lindahl & Hernroth, 1983, Olsson et al. 1992, Moller & Riisgard 2007a) and decreased food availability for other zooplanktivores, which can have impacts through the food chain (Purcell & Arai 2001). Given their widespread distribution, occurrence in large aggregations and capacity to alter trophic dynamics, jellyfishes are potentially important consumers and transformers of energy and nutrients in the marine ecosystem (e.g., Watanabe & Ishii 2001, Pauly et al. 2009, Pitt et al. 2009). Determining the abundances and sizes of jellyfish in the oceans has proved difficult because of their large sizes, fragility and patchy distributions, both horizontally and vertically, and because their gelatinous bodies are difficult to tag (Purcell 2009). Also, the high water content of their tissues makes acoustic sampling difficult, although combined acoustic soundings and video recordings can monitor relatively reliably some jellyfish species, provided the target species can be distinguished from other co-occurring species acoustically (Bamstedt et al. 2003, Alvarez Columbo et al. 2009). Consequently, estimates of the extents, causes and effects of jellyfish blooms have rarely been conducted on a large scale (Purcell 2009). Aurelia sp. medusae periodically occur in dense monospecific aggregations in the sheltered waterways of southeast Tasmania, Australia (pl. 1). The medusae are morphologically similar to Aurelia aurita; however, they are genetically distinct from other species of Aurelia and have been designated as Aurelia sp. 7 (Dawson et al. 2005). Growth, survival and reproduction of the sessile, asexual, colonial phase of this species has been found to be regulated by a combination of density-dependent factors and environmental conditions, which are consequently important to the formation of jellyfish aggregations (Willcox et al. 2008). These aggregations, however, were largely unnoticed until they caused the deaths of cultured Atlantic Salmon in Tasmania, valued at millions of dollars. 'The objective of this study was to describe the biological characteristics of this species, as part of a larger study investigating mechanisms driving the intermittent occurrence of Aurelia sp. aggregations in southeast Tasmania. This included growth and reproduction of individuals in the aggregations, and estimating aggregation size and total biomass of medusae in the system. Parrots, people and plants : urban tree removal and habitat loss for the endangered swift parrot, Lathamus discolor
Swift Parrots, Lathamus discolor, breed predominantly in southeastern Tasmania, including around the city of Hobart. While breeding, they feed mostly on the nectar and pollen of Tasmanian Blue Gum, Eucalyptus globulus, and Black Gum, E. ovata, trees. Swift Parrots are regularly observed foraging on these floral products in the Hobart suburb of Mt Nelson, where the trees produce more flowers than those in adjacent bushland. To investigate trends in the availability of food for Swift Parrots breeding near Hobart, we surveyed people who live in Mt Nelson to ascertain the extent of removal of large eucalypt trees from their properties. The 294 respondents to our questionnaire reported the presence of 263 large E. globulus and 109 large E. ovata on their properties. However, respondents also stated that they had removed 88 large E. globulus and 25 large E. ovata trees in the past five to 10 years, and intended felling a further 13 large E. globulus and 15 large E. ovata trees in the near future. This represents the removal of almost 30% of large trees of both species within a decade, and suggests a decline in foraging habitat for Swift Parrots while breeding near Hobart
Contributions to a catalogue of alien plants in Tasmania III
Management of Tasmania's alien flora requires an accurate and up-to-date account of taxa present. 1his paper is the third of a series (Baker 2005, 2007) which aims to ensure that taxa that become naturalised in Tasmania are formally recorded; that taxa that are present in Tasmania, but have not become fully naturalised ["sparingly naturalized" in the sense of Buchanan (2005) and Baker (2005)] are likewise recorded; that new incursions of alien taxa are recorded; and to maintain up-to-date names for taxa that have been affected by nomenclatural change. In this paper, six taxa are treated, giving diagnostic descriptions and notes on their distribution. It is hoped that this information will increase general knowledge of distribution of naturalised alien taxa in Tasmania and raise community awareness of plants that have the potential to become naturalised. Reports of new incursions, naturalised and sparingly naturalised species are welcomed by the author. Specimens and relevant collection information can be forwarded to the Tasmanian Herbarium

W.H.Hudspeth (1874-1952) son of Rev. Canon Francis
Hudspeth and grandson of John Maule Hudspeth (1792-1837),
graduated B.A. at Melbourne University and was called
to the Tasmanian Bar in 1898. He practised for 30
years in partnership with N.E.Lewis and Tetley Gant. For
many years he served on the Council of the Royal Society of Tasmania.
His papers consist of notes on various aspects of the
history of Tasmania and drafts of articles, written mainly
between 1935 and 1951. Royal Society RS.

This print has been mounted and inscribed (on mount) 'To the Trustees,
Royal Society of Tasmania, Greetings & Salutations'. This print was
carried as a despatch on the Barquentine "Regina Maris" to commemorate
the 200th Anniversary of the voyage made by Captain Cook in the "Endeavour"
when he discovered the East Coast of Australia in the year 1770. The
"Regina Maris" followed the track taken by Captain Cook. [signed] A.J.White,
