James Backhouse Walker Index: University of Tasmania Collection
James Backhouse Walker, a lawyer, was a foundation member of the University Council and later Vice-Chancellor 1898-9. He was formerly a member of the Tasmanian Council of Education and one of the foremost of those striving to found a University. In his personal letters to his family and friends amongst the Walker family papers (Walker Papers Uni.Tas. Deposited Archives W.9) he often referred to his aims for a University and he wrote a 7 page statement of the possible structure of the University, but he doubted whether it could be more than an examining body with no endowment and limited funds. He himself did much of the drafting of the University Act and the revisions of the Act. Indeed he wrote that he was doing most of the work himself. After the foundation of the University Council Walker continued to do most of the work of the Council, especially in drafting statutes and regulations. He also wrote personally to Associates of Arts of the Council of Education to ask them to become members of the Senate and he encouraged graduate friends to apply for degrees of the University ad eundem gradum to form a Senate as the body of the new University. These papers, filed with the Registrar's records, include Walker's official correspondence on University Council matters, notes of meetings, comments, drafts of regulations, news cuttings etc. From University Collection UT12
University Badge pre 1937 Index: University of Tasmania Collection
Photograph of a University Badge used before the adoption of the present Coat of Arms in 1937.
Transparency and enlarged colour print of a small metal brooch badge, worn in the 1930’s, lent by Mr and Mrs Lewis (through Mr B. Wilson). See UT 365
This badge was probably a badge of the Tasmania University Union, and is based on the official Common Seal of the University, omitting the star and rose and the inscription, with the addition of a punning motto IN UNITATEM UNI.TAS, it also appears on the TUU magazine Platypus and may have been adopted in the 1920’s when the Union first sent teams to Inter-Varsity sports.
The original University Common Seal was the seal of the Tasmanian Council of Education, whose functions were taken over by the University on its foundation in 1890, with the inscription altered to read: UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA COMMON SEAL 1890. (not altered until 1902, TCE one continued)

Ken Dallas Index: University of Tasmania Collection
Kenneth McKenzie (Ken) Dallas (1902-1988), historian, spent 1921 in Hobart at the University of Tasmania and Philip Smith Training College. His chief mentor then was John Johnson (and later James Brigden). He taught in rural areas, mainly at South Riana’s one-teacher school, and studied externally for a commerce degree at the university (B.Com., 1928), achieving outstanding results. In 1930 Dallas became tutor at Devonport for the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), which was then linked with the university. That year he worked with the WEA at Newcastle, New South Wales. In March 1932 he was appointed as Pitt Cobbett lecturer in the commerce faculty in Hobart, a position that entailed both university duties and directorship of the WEA. He was commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve on 1 January 1941, and sent to Britain for service in landing ships of the Royal Navy. His appointment terminated on 19 March 1945 in Hobart. This collection includes correspondence and diaries from 1920's and 1930's; memoranda and dairies from his naval service 1940-45; dairies and notebooks from 1955-1960's; autobiographical recollections of the 1920's; and photographs spanning 1920's - 1970's, including Launceston State High School sports and activities.
