M.W.Woods Index: University of Tasmania Collection
McDonell Watkyn Woods (Don) studied engineering from 1929 to 1933. He took the Thomas Normoyle prize in 1930 and the Russell Allport prize in 1931, graduated as B.Sc. and B.E. in 1934 and then went to Magdalen College, Oxford, on a Rhodes scholarship. He was a member of the T.U. Rifle Club, being the captain of the team in 1933, and was secretary of the University Union in 1932. The Tasmania University Rifle Club was formed in 1927 and a team entered for the Home and Home contest in November 1927 came third. Includes photographs of rifle teams 1930-1934, Student Representative Council photograph 1931-2, programmes and menus. Deposited by Mrs Doris E. Woods, 1982.

John Orr Index: University of Tasmania Collection
John Orr (1885-1966) was educated at the Launceston High School and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Tasmania. He matriculated in 1903 and passed the first examination for the BA. in Classics in Latin, French, Greek and English with credits. In 1904 he passed the second BA. exams with credits in Latin, ancient history and Greek. He was awarded a Rhodes scholarship for study at Oxford University and read classics (graduating 1907) and Jurisprudence (graduating 1909). He was a lecturer at Manchester University from 1913-1915, served with the Intelligence Corps 1916-18 and in 1919 became Professor of French at Manchester University. From 1933 he was Professor of French at Edinburgh University. Includes publications and articles.

The Tasmania University Union (TUU) was created in 1899, only 9 years after the establishment of the University of Tasmania, making it one of the oldest student bodies in Australia. There has been a Student Representative Council since 1929, and the union has resided in its present location since 1959. This index points to items related to the Tasmania University Union. University Centenary Committee Films Index: University of Tasmania Collection
Index to films of University buildings and activities made at various times and held by Photographic Section or Academic Departments and donated to the Centenary Committee for the Centenary history. Some films include items from news reels
donated by the A.B .C. Some show the progress of building work on the Sandy Bay site and the opening ceremonies. The dates of occupation of University buildings were: V.C.'s Lodge December 1958; Union March 1959 (building done in stages); Hytten Hall March 1959; Engineering workshops March 1959 and main building August 1960; Library February 1961; Chemistry February 1961; Arts July 1962; Geology & Geography November 1962; Life Sciences building work began 1963. The
temporary Administration building, later converted to Staff Flats, was first occupied in March 1957. The transfer of departments from the Domain was completed in November 1962. The removal of the temporary huts at Sandy Bay was begun
December 1962 when the Geology huts were sold (see Gazette May 1959, June 1962, Annual Report 1962,1966). An opening ceremony was held on 16 May 1959 when the Premier, Hon. Eric E. Reece, officially opened the Union, the Engineering Laboratory block and Hytten Hall. The ceremony commenced in the Engineering building at 3pm. On 31 March 1962 H.E. the Governor of Tasmanian, Lord Rowallan, opened the Chemistry and Library buildings, followed by tea in the Union.

Marine Life Photographs by ER Guiler Index: University of Tasmania Collection
Eric Rowland Guiler was a Lecturer 1948-51, Senior Lecturer 1952-73 and then Reader 1974-83 in Zoology at the University of Tasmania. This is a collection of photographs of marine life taken by ER Guiler, including the environment and close-ups of species in Tasmania mainly from the 1950s, as well as a series taken in Chile in 1955. Prints approx. 120mm x 160mm or 115mm x 115mm.

James Alexander Cardno MA Aberdeen & Cambridge, FBPs. FAPsS. FAPA, was Professor of Psychology 1965-1980, Senior Lecturer 1950, Associate Professor 1951. A collection of 44 notebooks, including his study and lecture notebooks 1934-1937 as a student at Aberdeen University and later at St John's College, Cambridge, as well as miscellaneous notes and draft articles 1936-1974.
