    Eric Rowland Guiler was a Lecturer 1948-51, Senior Lecturer 1952-73 and then Reader 1974-83 in Zoology at the University of Tasmania. UT547 E Guiler Thylacine Studies includes 160 small 8mm film reels and notes on site locations taken on his Thylacine expeditions. Also includes bundles of cards of animal sightings records 1953-1978 of potorous, Tasmanian devils, tiger cats and native cats at Mount Nelson, Granville Harbour and Cape Portland. Donated by Eric Guiler, 1993. UT470 Marine Life Photographs is a collection of photographs taken by ER Guiler, including the environment and close-ups of species in Tasmania mainly from the 1950s, as well as a series taken in Chile in 1955. Prints approx. 120mm x 160mm or 115mm x 115mm.     Professor Edwin James George Pitman Index: University of Tasmania Collection

    Papers, notes and correspondence relating to mathematics, especially mathematical statistics, of Professor Edwin James George Pitman (1897-1993) BSc., MA(Melb.), FAA., Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tasmania 1926-1962. He was educated at South Melbourne College and Ormond College, University of Melbourne. He was Acting Professor of Mathematics at Canterbury College of the University of New Zealand 1922 - 1923, Tutor in Mathematics and Physics Trinity and Ormond Colleges University of Melbourne 1924-1925, and appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tasmania from January 1926 by a decision of the University Council of June 1925. Professor Pitman's speciality was mathematical probability and statistics and he was a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and was Visiting Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the Universities of Columbia, North Carolina and Princeton 1948 - 1949 and Visiting Professor of Statistics at Stanford University, California 1958. He was President of the Australian Mathematical Society in 1958. The papers include research and study notes (some dating back to Ormond College days) and correspondence with other mathematicians, drafts and published papers, miscellaneous notes and correspondence in an alphabetical filing system and correspondence relating to appointments and honours. Professor Pitman's papers are stored in 11 archives boxes (2 shelf metres). Donated by Edwin & Jane Pitman August, 1993 (received from Prof. Pitman January, 1993, additional items boxes 9-11 August, 1993). From University Collection UT543
