Predicting Cherax quadricarinatus Habitat Distribution Patterns Through the Usage of GIS and eDNA Analysis in Terengganu, Malaysia
Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens, 1868) is a highly invasive species that is resilient and highly adaptable to environmental conditions in new locations. Its presence brings along ecosystem imbalances and causes socioeconomic losses in invaded areas. Due to the destructive behaviour, it is important to conduct preliminary assessment methods and scientific studies especially on its behavioural and dispersal patterns. Thus, this study aims to determine the habitat distribution patterns of C. quadricarinatus based on the methods of GIS and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. The study was done at Felda Tenang, Terengganu, Malaysia. Based on the geographical features and climate conditions of the study area, we theorized that there are fewer and older C. quadricarinatus present at higher areas but more and younger C. quadricarinatus at lower areas. We found that 91.67% of the study area to be invaded, thus imploring the need for future mitigation plans to curb their dispersal into new areas. Future studies should also be done to determine the habitat distribution patterns of C. quadricarinatus in other areas
y-Fe2O3 Nanoparticle modified electrode surface for monitoring gestational diabetes mellitus
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a medical complication during the pregnancy period, caused by the elevation of blood glucose. Adiposity, fetal growth, hypertensive disorders are highly associated with GDM. In addition, a longer-term health issues such as pre-diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases are addressed with mothers having GDM. There is an effective diagnostic approach is mandatory for GDM and this research work developed a sensitive glucose biosensing on iron oxide nanoparticle (FeONP; γ -Fe 2 O 3 ) modified interdigitated aluminium electrode (IDE) with the substrate silicon followed by overlaying silica upon oxidation. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on FeONP modified surface through amine and aldehyde linkers and then glucose was quantified. FeONP increases the attachment of GOx on IDE and optimized concentration of 200 nM GOx was desired on IDE to achieve a maximum current response with glucose and GOx interaction. The gradual increment in current was recorded by adding different glucose concentrations and the detection limit was calculated to be 10 mg/dL with an R ² value of 0.9903 (on a linear concentrations 10–640 mg//dL). Further, control experiment was failed to display the current response, specifying the genuine identification of glucose on FeONP attached IDE surface
Strategies to improve the physicochemical properties of peptide‑based drugs
Peptides are a rapid-growing class of therapeutics with unique and desirable physicochemical properties. Due to disadvantages such as low membrane permeability and susceptibility to proteolytic degradation, peptide-based drugs have limited bioavailability, a short half-life, and rapid in vivo elimination. Various strategies can be applied to improve the physicochemical properties of peptide-based drugs to overcome limitations such as limited tissue residence time, metabolic instability, and low permeability. Applied strategies including backbone modifcations, side chain modifcations, conjugation with polymers, modifcation of peptide termini, fusion to albumin, conjugation with the Fc portion of antibodies, cyclization, stapled peptides, pseudopeptides, cell-penetrating peptide conjugates, conjugation with lipids, and encapsulation in nanocarriers are discussed
Covid-19 and E-wallet usage intention in Kyrgyzstan
The usage of electronic commerce has continued to expand since the Covid-19 pandemic began in developed and developing countries. However, the usage of electronic commerce in Central Asian countries is underresearched. This study aims to determine the factors that influence e-wallet usage intention in Kyrgyzstan. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) is extended and adopted in developing the hypotheses. Using surveys, 319 questionnaires were collected from young and middle-aged adults in Kyrgyzstan. The findings show that attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control has a positive relationship with intention to use e-wallets. It is also found that attitude and intention will be stronger if the perceived behavioral control is high. The findings suggest ways to enhance the use of e-wallets in in Kyrgyzstan

Neuroprotective effect of metallothionein against rotenone- and copper-induced toxicity in human dopaminergic SH-SY5Y cells
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by depletion of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and reduction of dopamine levels in the striatum. Exposure to agricultural pesticides, toxins and metals has been found to induce oxidative stress and toxicity in the brain, associated with the PD pathogenesis. Metallothionein (MT) is a family of metal ion-binding proteins which scavenges free radicals and toxic metal in the nervous system. Although studies have reported the protective role of MTs in neurodegenerative diseases, the underlying mechanism of neuroprotective effects of MT isoform 2 (MT-2) has not been fully studied in PD-associated pathogenesis. This project aims to elucidate the protective effect of recombinant human Metallothionein-2 (hMT-2) protein against rotenone- and metal-induced toxicity in human SH-SY5Y cells as an in vitro PD model. Cells were then exposed to rotenone and copper (II) sulfate (CuSO4) to induce toxicity and cell death. Cell viability assay, oxidative stress analysis, Hoechst staining, apoptosis detection assays and western blot were further conducted to assess the neuroprotective potential of h-MT2 treatment against rotenone- and CuSO4-induced effect in SH-SY5Y cells. Differentiated SH-SY5Y cells exposed to rotenone and CuSO4 exhibited decreased viability, increased ROS production and increased apoptotic events including increased in caspase activation and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, establishing the in vitro model associated with PD pathogenesis. Further pre-treatment of hMT-2 was shown to improve cell survival and ameliorate the rotenone- and CuSO4-induced oxidative stress and toxicity in SH-SY5Y cells. These results suggest that exogenous hMT-2 treatment may provide neuroprotection against cellular toxicity related to the pathogenesis of PD in SH-SY5H cells
Urban public knowledge towards Sarcopenia: health education needs assessment
Introduction: Sarcopenia is increasingly recognized as a health problem among older persons and is one of the major determinant factors in frailty. Studies revealed sarcopenia is prevalent in Malaysia and it have detrimental impact on the quality of life of older people. Sarcopenia can be prevented with adequate knowledge and practices on controlling the risk factors. This study aimed to assess the urban public’s knowledge on sarcopenia. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among urban population in one of the states in Malaysia. Data was collected from October to December 2020. Results: A total of Two hundred and two publics participated in the study. The present study revealed that only 14 (6.9%) of the participants were found to possess good knowledge about sarcopenia with mean age was 49.0 years (SD = ±12.65. Analysis of variance indicated statistically significant differences at the < 0.05 significance level for age group, gender, educational level and smoking habit. Conclusion: The findings highlight the lack of sarcopenia knowledge among the urban public. This study indicated urban public are not well-informed about sarcopenia and lack of health promotion strategies to address this alarming public health problem. The study findings have identified the health education needs and will contribute to the development and implementation of an evidence-based health promotion programme serve as data for health promotion programme towards sarcopenia and its prevention
