    The acropolis of the socialist Yugoslavia between absence, presence and non-existence

    In our search for the Acropolis of the socialist Yugoslavia we should focus our attention on New Belgrade, as it was planned to be the new capital of the country led by the Communist Party, victoriously emerging from the Second World War. In their enthusiastically organized volunteer labor, they have rendered absent both material and immaterial traces of the urban and architectural efforts of the previous regime. In that way they have effectively cut them off from any stake in future discussions. By adopting this “tabula rasa” concept they allowed themselves freedom to search for the new identity of the Yugoslav architecture independent from both Western and Eastern patterns and models. Was it successful can be a topic for another discussion but it is evident that many project remained on paper for various reasons. Those building who were constructed, suffered a lot in this post-communist period from negligence and lack of maintenance that this rendered them presently absent or absently present. Some underwent such huge makeover, losing their original identity to such an extent that they became non-existent. In this period of transition from the communist/socialist to postsocialist society, the history repeated itself with different actors only in an attempt to render absent material and immaterial traces of the previous regime. The Acropolis of the socialist Yugoslavia was executed only partially, although it was envisioned as a core made of buildings serving executive, theoretical/ideological and symbolical/commemorative functions. Their present day appearance could serve as a paradigm of the political and societal changes that this country underwent in last seventy years

    International regulation of historic buildings and nationalism: the role of Unesco

    This article focuses on the (ambiguous) relations between nationalism and international regulation of historic buildings. There are several tensions and reciprocal influences in this field: nationalistic policies operate sometimes nudged by, sometimes against international regulation, as well as sometimes in favour of, sometimes diminishing the protection of historic buildings. The analysis deals with what is usually considered the most suitable standpoint to unpack such problems: the activity of UNESCO. From this perspective, two different forms of intervention can be distinguished. The first one is the creation of a world heritage of outstanding universal value. The second one relates to the UNESCO recommendations aimed at protecting historic urban landscape. The article shows that UNESCO seems to favour both political and cultural forms of nationalism: this could significantly affect the nationalistic use of historic buildings, and, on a broader level, produce relevant effects on the very idea of Nation

    On the Relationship between Variational Level Set-Based and SOM-Based Active Contours

    Most Active Contour Models (ACMs) deal with the image segmentation problem as a functional optimization problem, as they work on dividing an image into several regions by optimizing a suitable functional. Among ACMs, variational level set methods have been used to build an active contour with the aim of modeling arbitrarily complex shapes. Moreover, they can handle also topological changes of the contours. Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) have attracted the attention of many computer vision scientists, particularly in modeling an active contour based on the idea of utilizing the prototypes (weights) of a SOM to control the evolution of the contour. SOM-based models have been proposed in general with the aim of exploiting the specific ability of SOMs to learn the edge-map information via their topology preservation property and overcoming some drawbacks of other ACMs, such as trapping into local minima of the image energy functional to be minimized in such models. In this survey, we illustrate the main concepts of variational level set-based ACMs, SOM-based ACMs, and their relationship and review in a comprehensive fashion the development of their state-of-the-art models from a machine learning perspective, with a focus on their strengths and weaknesses

    Multiscale asymptotic homogenization analysis of thermo-diffusive composite materials

    In this paper an asymptotic homogenization method for the analysis of composite materials with periodic microstructure in presence of thermodiffusion is described. Appropriate down-scaling relations correlating the microscopic fields to the macroscopic displacements, temperature and mass concentration are introduced. The effects of the material inhomogeneities are described by perturbation functions derived from the solution of recursive cell problems. Exact expressions for the overall elastic and thermodiffusive constants of the equivalent first order thermodiffusive continuum are derived. The proposed approach is applied to the case of a two-dimensional bi-phase orthotropic layered material, where the effective elastic and thermodiffusive properties can be determined analytically. Considering this illustrative example and assuming periodic body forces, heat and mass sources acting on the medium, the solution performed by the first order homogenization approach is compared with the numerical results obtained by the heterogeneous model

    Twitlang(er): Interactions Modeling Language (and Interpreter) for Twitter

    Online social networks are widespread means to enact interactive collaboration among people by, e.g., planning events, diffusing information, and enabling discussions. Twitter provides one of the most illustrative example of how people can effectively interact without resorting to traditional communication media. For example, the platform has acted as a unique medium for reliable communication in emergency or for organising cooperative mass actions. This use of Twitter in a cooperative, possibly critical, setting calls for a more precise awareness of the dynamics regulating message spreading. To this aim, in this paper, we propose Twitlang, a formal language to model interactions among Twitter accounts. The operational semantics associated to the language allows users to clearly and precisely determine the effects of actions performed by Twitter accounts, such as post, retweet, reply-to or delete tweets. The language is implemented in the form of a Maude interpreter, Twitlanger, which takes a language term as an input and, automatically or interactively, explores the computations arising from the term. By relying on this interpreter, automatic verification of communication properties of Twitter accounts can be carried out via the analysis tools provided by the Maude framework. We illustrate the benefits of our executable formalisation by means of few simple, yet typical, examples of Twitter interactions, whose effects are somehow subtle

    A Calculus for Attribute-based Communication

    The notion of attribute-based communication seems promising to model and analyse systems with huge numbers of interacting components that dynamically adjust and combine their behaviour to achieve specific goals. A basic process calculus, named AbC, is introduced that has as primitive construct exactly attribute-based communication and its impact on the above mentioned kind of systems is considered. An AbC system consists of a set of parallel components each of which is equipped with a set of attributes. Communication takes place in a broadcast fashion and communication links among components are dynamically established by taking into account interdependences determined by predicates over attributes. First, the syntax and the reduction semantics of AbC are presented, then its expressiveness and effectiveness is demonstrated by modelling two scenarios from the realm of TV streaming channels. An example of how well-established process calculi could be encoded into AbC is given by considering the translation into AbC of a prototypical π-calculus process
