Influence of geological and geotehnical conditions on construction of residental houses

Slovenian territory is characterized by diverse geological and geomorphological structure and tectonic activity. In designing and construction of objects it is therefore necessary to pay special attention to geologically caused risk factors, namely landslides, karst collapses, flooding of groundwater and surface water, tectonic zones, and soft and very compressible ground. In designing of large infrastructure objects, geological and geotechnical researches are an important integral part of planning of work in early stages of design and during construction. In designing and construction of individual houses and local traffic roads, geological and geotechnical researches are often overlooked either due to ignorance and short-sightedness of investors or savings in short term. Therefore, it is not coincidence that from year to year we face enormous damage on residential objects caused by landslides, floods, and uneven subsiding. An important role is also played by the fact that with constructions we increasingly interfere with the areas that our ancestries avoided, and also by more frequent weather extremes. In the graduation thesis, I presented the most common geologically caused risk factors in Slovenia, and their consequences on individual residential objects. From the geotechnical perspective I analysed and compared two locations for construction of residential object in the vicinity of Brezovica. Advantages and disadvantages of both locations for construction are presented

Steps to making of school routes plan with using of control lists

The diploma thesis presents the process of making school routes plan. The researched area has still been developing in Slovenia and it needs clearer legislation and content frames. The most important part of the content are clear and useful instructions, which would direct schools from the beginning to the end of the process of making school routes plan. One of the documents is especially for schools adjusted control list as an accessory for assessment of school paths' security and a tool for discovering of problematic spots and situations that children could meet. In the thesis, the influence of the developmental features and mobility of children, conditions, and causes for traffic accidents, where children are involved, are presented. There is also current legislation presented and all the needed steps and roles of the participants who prepare school routes plan. A comparison of the whole process with examples of good practice in our country and abroad has also been done. Based on general approach of road safety inspection and sources, which researches safety of children on their way to school, control lists of certain areas have been done. Slovene technical specifications, rulebooks, and laws for the area of traffic safety have been used with that. Clear criteria for control spots have been given for identification of problematic spots and situations on school routes. Control lists have been practically tested on the school routes of the Primary school F. S. Finžgar Lesce. At the end, the results and findings of the field examination with all the perceived imperfections of the chosen school's school routes safety assessment have been presented

Comparative study between the classical and the nearly zero energy residential masonry building investment

Legislation concerning the energy efficiency of new buildings is getting more and more strict, on the other hand, the price of the energy resources is in the long term gone continue to rise, so that is why it seems that an investment in the nearly zero-energy masonry building is a right investment. In addition to high living comfort, the costs for heating and maintenance of nearly zero-energy masonry buildings are low. In the graduation thesis I present the launch and the development of the construction of nearly zero-energy buildings, the building technology and the details that are important in the construction. In the continuation of the thesis I conduct an analysis of the costs of construction and operation of nearly zero-energy masonry buildings and classical masonry buildings and compare them. After the comparison I, using the obtained data, calculate the repayment period of the investment into the nearly zero-energy masonry building. In the thesis I also present the results of a questionnaire that the investors in the nearly zero-energy masonry buildings answered, as well as the recommendations for future investors in the nearly zero-energy masonry buildings

In this thesis the longitudinal object subdivision is described according to the Real-Estate Recording Act, and is introduced on a practical example, namely the measurement of the municipal road No. 163161, located in the municipality Kanal ob Soči. Presented are the procedures of acquiring orders, the execution during the fieldwork, and the results for the final measurement of the longitudinal object. The meaning of subdivision and boundary regulation is presented, as we often come across these procedures during the longitudinal object \ud subdivision. In the final part of the thesis the entry in official records is presented, followed by the expert's detailed report of the subdivision and boundary regulation, which is presented entirely in the enclosure

Influence of binder type on the properties of restoration renders

As part of this thesis, a test was made on fresh and hardened mortar mixtures aimed at preparing restoration renders. The main purpose was to prepare various compositions of mortar for restoration renders that would have the highest possible air content and water vapour permeability at adequate compressive strength. We wanted to find out how different types of binders and chemical admixtures affect these properties of mortars. Based on the given ratio between the aggregate, the binder and the admixtures, the first part of the thesis focuses on the final mixture compositions that were obtained after several attempts of adding different amounts of water to them. Superplasticizer and air entraining agent were used as chemical admixtures and as binders two different types of cement and lime were used. Research on the fresh mixtures was conducted with standardized methods of determining the flow value on the flow table, after which the density and porosity of mortar were determined. In the second part of the thesis, compressive strength and water vapour diffusion were tested on 28-day-old hardened samples. All the results obtained during the tests are given in tables and graphs

Lime-cement injection grouts with white cement

Within the scope of this diploma thesis we studied the influence of white Portland cement and its content on properties of injection grouts with binder composed of hydrated lime and white Portland cement. Powdered stone was used as filing material. Water content in the grouts was reduced with chemical admixture (PPh superplasticizer).\ud The tests were performed on the fresh and hardened grouts. On fresh grouts mixture we have performed the test of fluidity and bleeding test and we also determined the water retentivity and the flow value. On hardened grout we have performed the measurement of shrinkage and we have\ud determined flexural strength and compressive strength. The phenolphthalein test was also used to determine the level of carbonization. All the tests and measurements were carried out in the laboratory of the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering of University of Ljubljana

Analysis of renovation of St. Florian's church in Fojana, Brda

The thesis is about describing the characteristics of masonry buildings and the ways of renovating them. I focused on old masonry buildings of stone and brick and I described some of the most frequent causes of deterioration. The ways of renovation are mainly focused on constructional reinforcement due to its importance to provide old buildings enough seismic protection and, at the same time, to adjust them to the needs of modern life. The second part deals with analysis of renovation of St. Florian's church in Fojana. I described the initial state of the building before the renovation. I gave a detailed description of all works which were carried out in the process of renovation. Due to the fact that the renovation has been done on the basis of my previous experience I verified some parts of the construction with the static calculation

Ballast water management compliance monitoring - indicative methods

Vessels need ballast water to ensure their stability and manoeuvrability during their port and sailing operations when un-laden. Ballast water contains sediments, organisms and pathogens, which are transferred from one geographic location to another. Therefore, vessels are considered one of the primary pathways for the transfer of harmful aquatic\ud organisms and pathogens. The D-2 regulation of the Ballast Water Management Convention allows the ships to discharge less organisms than specified in the D-2 standard to prevent its spread, transfer and the introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens around the globe. The Convention also requires inspections in order to verify vessels compliance with the requirements. Inspectors can take samples of the ballast water in order to perform a\ud biological sample analysis test using indicative instruments, or to conduct a detailed test. We reviewed the possible methods of taking a representative sample of the ballast water for monitoring compliance with the Convention, and the indicative sample analysis tools. The\ud key objective of this diploma was to evaluate the appropriateness of the selected tool Walz Water PAM for indicative analysis, which is used to identify living phytoplankton cells. The measurements of the instrument Walz Water PAM were compared with detailed analysis of\ud samples in a laboratory. It was concluded that Walz Water PAM could be suitable for the indicative analysis of the vessels ballast water

Behaviour of timber columNs under combined aXial and bending actions

In the present graduation thesis I deal with the conduct of timber columns under influence of combined axial and bending actions with emphasis on problems of buckling. These problems are specific with timber for which significant non-linear behaviour under compression stresses is characteristic. To this purpose I have elaborated a computer program for numerical simulation of nonlinear elastic response the elaboration of which is in greater detail presented after review of theoretical background. Presented are also the demands and proceedings according to European standard for design of timber structures Eurocode 5. I compare the results which follow these demands with results of my computer program

Influence of content and grain size distribution of recycled aggregate on concrete properties

Environmental concerns are all around us. The influence of an increasing awareness and care for the environment is present also in construction sector, in the areas of material selection, construction technology and construction waste management. When using concrete we strive to avoid negative impacts on the environment. Legislation in the area of construction, environment and waste follows the decisions of authorities relatively fast. This year the government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted the Programme of waste management and waste prevention in the Republic of Slovenia in accordance\ud with the legislation.\ud The main aim of this diploma thesis is the assessment of the influence of content and grain size distribution of recycled aggregate on concrete properties. We tried to find out whether it is possible to exchange natural aggregate with a recycled one while maintaining the basic properties of fresh and hardened concrete.\ud When preparing the concrete mixtures two types of aggregate were used. Natural aggregate was delivered from France within project "COST Action TU1404", while recycled aggregate from crushed waste concrete was acquired from a separation plant near Ljubljana. The preparation of samples and testing of recycled aggregate was carried out at the laboratory of UL FGG. With tests we first determined the physical properties of the recycled aggregate (grain size distribution, fines content, particle shape, density, water absorption, moisture content, presence of humus particles). On the basis of obtained results the suitability of the aggregate for use in concrete mixtures was assessed. Three mixtures of fresh concrete were prepared with the same amount of cement and the same water-to-cement ratio. The first mixture was prepared with fine natural aggregate and coarse recycled aggregate, the second one with recycled fine aggregate and natural coarse aggregate, while in the third mixture only recicled aggregate was used. The properties of fresh concrete (consistency, density, air content) and hardened concrete (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, depth of water penetration under pressure) were determined according to SIST EN standard methods. On the basis of obtained results the tested concretes were classified into compressive strength classes, and analysis of the results was carried out. At the end, recommendations were given for the use of such concretes in the construction sector
