Emotion- and Mentalization Supporting Therapy EMST (EMVT)
To make EMST (EMVT) more accessible, the 2024 Yearbook has also been published as an easy-to-read ebook (e.g., with the free Kindle app).
The theory, practice, and research of Emotion- and Mentalization Supporting Therapy are presented concisely and understandably. This allows readers to recognize and understand differences and similarities with related therapy approaches. The authors believe that the combination of emotion and mentalization support/metacognition support represents a significant benefit for psychotherapy, which is significantly less evident in established therapy approaches. This approach is very new and was first published in 2021
Alternative Media in Lebanon : The Role of Digital Platforms in a Polarized Hybrid Media System
This article aims to contribute to the literature about the roles and limitations of alternative media activism in different hybrid media systems by scrutinizing the organizational and discursive counter-hegemonic agency of digital alternative platforms in the Lebanese media system that is prone to high political parallelism, elite control, and polarization. To achieve this objective, semi-structured interviews with Lebanese journalists and a qualitative framing analysis for the alternative and mainstream media coverage of the Beirut Port explosion, which took place on the 4 August 2020 and led to the death of hundreds of people, were conducted. Our results show that Lebanese alternative media strive to escape the hegemonic control of sectarian and political groups by trying to achieve editorial and financial independence. Besides, they attempted in their framing of the explosion to develop a different narrative of the political conflict as a meta-sectarian one between the people and the ruling class from all the sects. However, they face the challenge of distinguishing themselves from the mainstream oppositional media that stands against the current regime. These results highlight the challenges and new possibilities opened by digital technologies for alternative media to escape the political hegemony in a polarized hybrid media system
Attentional Precursors of Errors Predict Error-Related Brain Activity
The error negativity or error-related negativity (Ne/ERN), a correlate of errors in choice tasks, is related to posterror adjustments indicating that it signals the need for behavioral adjustments following errors. However, little is known about how the error monitoring system selects appropriate posterror adjustments for a given error to ensure that future errors are effectively prevented. This could be achieved by monitoring error precursors indicating potential error sources and then scaling the Ne/ERN according to the strength of the error precursor upon error occurrence. We isolated such an error precursor in alpha oscillations and tested whether it predicts the size of the Ne/ERN. A total of 28 participants (23 female, 5 male) had to classify a target in one hemifield but ignore a distractor in the opposite hemifield. Because responding to the distractor always led to an error, misallocating spatial attention to the distractor as reflected in posterior alpha was a viable error precursor in this paradigm. We found that an alpha asymmetry reversal indicated a shift of spatial attention to the distractor on error trials and predicted the Ne/ERN on a single-trial level. The Ne/ERN in turn predicted alpha asymmetry on the next trial indicating a shift of spatial attention away from the distractor. This is consistent with the idea that the error monitoring system scales the Ne/ERN according to the strength of error precursors to select appropriate posterror adjustments of behavior
Evaluation of a training programme for interpreters in the field of trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy : one year follow-up
Background:
If the patient does not speak the national language, access to the healthcare system is usually only possible via an interpreter. The need for evaluated training for interpreters working in this field is emphasized in the literature, particularly in the context of psychotherapeutic treatment. This study evaluates a TF-CBT-specific training course for interpreters over a period of one year.
Methods:
The TF-CBT-specific training was conducted in the form of webinars via the online communication provider Zoom in 10 sessions with 10-15 participants each. The content of the training included the topics of trauma and PTSD, how to establish a constructive working relationship with the therapist, and the modules of TF-CBT with an explanation of the therapeutic principles. In a previous study knowledge gain and a change of an attitude that is more conductive to good cooperation was archived by the workshop in prä-post-tests. In this study the training was evaluated at the 6-month and 12-month follow-up using hierarchical linear regression.
Results:
Results show that attitude change remained stable over the one-year period. Knowledge and psychotherapy support were statistically significant predictors. Knowledge gained during training decreased over time. Attitude and psychotherapy support were identified as statistically significant predictors.
Discussion:
The evaluated training for interpreters, who were willing to interpret in a TF-CBT for children and adolescents, showed a stable improvement in attitudes regarding good cooperation with the therapist. Knowledge about PTSD and TF-CBT, did not remain stable over the period of one year after the training. In other comparable training courses, this could be compensated for by consolidation in supervision meetings
First Integration of a Service Robot and a Communication Application into a Nursing Isolation Setting : An Observational Study Evaluating Walking Distances, Stress and Radiation Doses
Nurses spend a significant proportion of a workday on non-nursing or auxiliary tasks, mainly due to the unilateral patient call system. This leads to work interruptions, a decrease in quality of care and stress for nurses. One approach for relieving nurses is the integration of new technologies. We performed an interventional study for seven months in a nuclear medicine station in a maximum care hospital, where we integrated a smartphone app for patient-staff communication in combination with a service robot for delivery of non-nursing and service items and evaluated the effects on walking distances and stress. We also examined the radiation dose to the nursing staff. To this purpose, we observed nurses at nine different time points for six shifts to measure walking distances and interruptions. Additionally, nurses and service personnel completed a questionnaire adapted from the NASA RAW TLX at the end of each shift to assess stress. Short walking distances accounted for the largest share of the caregivers’ walking distances. There was no direct effect of the technique on stress levels and walking distances, only a shift towards shorter walking distances with longer implementation. The total number of walking distances seemed to be proportional to the feeling of interruption and the individually experienced stress. This first use of the combined technology implementation in the acute clinic worked well. While this work provides an initial indication of where the implementation of this combined technology could potentially relieve the burden on nurses and service staff, further research is needed to establish causal relationships.

Securing Local Effects in Globalization through Multi-level Governance : Evidence from Steering the New Silk Road
The New Silk Road (NSR), in combination with global challenges on climate action, trade wars, and the COVID-19 Pandemic, requests a new understanding of the “local” in more sustainable globalization. Being far more than an infrastructure initiative, China takes a leading role in future globalization. However, the NSR faces an implementation gap in sustainably generating local effects. In this line, experts call to implement joint governance, leading to the research question: how can multi-level governance assist in securing local effects along with the countries of the NSR? Building upon theories on governance and regionalism across spatial scales, this article introduces the results of a qualitative content analysis on international expert interviews. The analysis reveals the potentials and challenges of the NSR for local effects but also includes suggestions for transnational cooperation and governance, which finally leads to defining the role of supranational institutions and the necessity of local support in terms of a governance design
