Are the automatic effects of instructions modulated by instructed, context-specific strategic control?
Automatic effects of instructions (AEIs) are typically reported with simple instructions that specify stimulus-response (S-R) mappings. Evidence in support of AEIs for instructions that specify more complex rules is less consistent. Here, we investigated whether instructions communicating context-specific strategic control routines designed to reduce evidence accumulation from the target stimulus can affect AEIs in the NEXT paradigm (Meiran et al., 2015). In each mini-block, participants were first instructed on the S-R mappings that should be implemented in the two GO trials at the end of the mini-block. In the intervening NEXT trials (0–3 trials), participants responded to each stimulus with the same (e.g. left) NEXT response. Importantly, the instructions also indicated the probability that each stimulus would be presented during the critical GO trials (e.g. 90% vs. 10%). We reasoned that this would strategically reduce the amount of information accumulated from the target stimulus prior to selecting a response, thereby reducing the magnitude of AEIs. GO performance was modulated by the context, suggesting that the strategic aspects of the instructions had been implemented. However, AEIs were broadly consistent across contexts, suggesting that the adopted strategy did not affect automatic behaviour. This pattern of results was consistent across three experiments (one preregistered), suggesting that complex instructions do not automatically trigger strategic control in dynamic environments
In Germany, the names of sports teams are often identical to the sports clubs a team is part of, cf., e. g., 1. FC Nürnberg. Apart from this traditional naming custom, some sports teams use names of a more recent structure as part of their marketing, cf. Nürnberg Barracudas. Such names are found outside soccer, mostly in newly promoted sports with well-known professional leagues in North America, e. g., baseball or American football, but also in sports with a strong European tradition such as rowing or floorball. A database of such names was gathered from sports reports in journalism and from the highest national leagues in Germany. An exploratory analysis of the data shows that the names frequently combine a city or region name (in simple, underived form) with a descriptive English noun (e. g., Saarlouis Hornets). The descriptive item often refers to the sports themselves (e. g., Volleys), to animals with a strong and aggressive connotation, or to persons. In journalism, descriptive parts are often used both in the English form and in German translation to increase stylistic variation. In some team names, the names of sponsoring companies are included, but only few sponsor names are used as main reference for a team

Right but Still Lousy : Correct Responses with an Unfavorable Outcome Elicit an Error Positivity
The error positivity (Pe) is a neural correlate of performance monitoring that is observed after errors in choice tasks. The results of previous studies suggest that the Pe reflects a monitoring process that goes beyond the mere distinction between correct and incorrect responses. Here, we investigated the idea that the Pe represents a higher‐order error signal reflecting an inference‐based outcome evaluation. To this end, we created a multistage task whose overall outcome depended on the correctness of each individual stage and was revealed not until the last stage. This implied that the final response could lead to an unfavorable outcome even if it was objectively correct. Our results replicated the general finding that a Pe occurs immediately after errors within each stage. Crucially, we also obtained a Pe after correct responses associated with an unfavorable outcome at the final stage. Moreover, a pattern classifier trained to decode this higher‐order Pe successfully decoded the Pe for incorrect responses. These results suggest that the Pe represents an evaluative process that infers the outcome by integrating multiple error signals and taking context into account
How precise is precise enough? : Tree crown segmentation using high resolution close‑up multispectral UAV images and its effect on NDVI accuracy in Fraxinus excelsior L. trees
Detailed individual tree crown segmentation is highly relevant for the detection and monitoring of Fraxinus excelsior L. trees affected by ash dieback, a major threat to
common ash populations across Europe. In this study, both fine and coarse crown segmentation methods were applied to close-range multispectral UAV imagery. The fine tree
crown segmentation method utilized a novel unsupervised machine learning approach based on a blended NIR–NDVI image, whereas the coarse segmentation relied on the segment
anything model (SAM). Both methods successfully delineated tree crown outlines, however, only the fine segmentation accurately captured internal canopy gaps. Despite these structural differences, mean NDVI values calculated per tree crown revealed no significant differences between the two approaches, indicating that coarse segmentation is
sufficient for mean vegetation index assessments. Nevertheless, the fine segmentation revealed increased heterogeneity in NDVI values in more severely damaged trees, underscoring its value for detailed structural and health analyses. Furthermore,
the fine segmentation workflow proved transferable to both individual UAV images and orthophotos from broader UAV surveys. For applications focused on structural
integrity and spatial variation in canopy health, the fine segmentation approach is recommended
