Teachers’ perceived stressors and stress from Instagram use

    No full text
Many teachers use social media for professional purposes, but the impact of these activities on their well-being is underexplored. In this study, we developed four scales to assess stressors from teachers’ Instagram use and examined their relationship to Instagram-related stress among 304 teachers. Structural equation modeling revealed that information overload, social comparison, and procrastination are associated with teacher stress. Passive Instagram use (e.g. seeking information) was related to more social comparison and procrastination, while active use (e.g. sharing information) was associated with less social comparison. Our findings contribute to understanding potential side effects of teachers’ job-related social media use. Moreover, this study adds quantitative insights into how social media affects teacher stress, informing educators and policymakers alike

Faces of forgiveness : The impact of emotional facial expressions on the willingness to forgive

    No full text
This study explored how facial emotional expressions influence the willingness to forgive, focusing on the role of sadness and attentional orientation under neutral and stress-induced conditions. An online survey was administered through Qualtrics to a U.S. sample (N = 246), employing scales to measure trait forgiveness, compassion, and willingness to forgive. Visual stimuli from the OASIS database were used to induce stress and present facial expressions, with a prior validation study (N = 215) selecting appropriate images displaying happy, neutral, and sad faces. The findings show that sad expressions significantly increased the willingness to forgive compared to neutral or happy expressions, supporting the empathy-altruism hypothesis. Trait forgiveness and compassion enhanced the willingness to forgive, highlighting the interplay between dispositional traits and situational factors. Attentional orientation towards emotional expressions varied with trait forgiveness under stress: those higher in trait forgiveness preferred happy faces. In contrast, those lower in trait forgiveness were more attentive to sad faces. These results suggest that recognizing emotional expressions has the potential to facilitate forgiveness, offering practical implications for conflict resolution strategies. Future research should address limitations such as cultural representation and the complexity of real-life emotional interactions using diverse samples and advanced techniques like eye-tracking

Attraktivität des Ehrenamts im Katastrophenschutz : Soziales Miteinander als Schlüssel?

    No full text

Attachment and Psychological Distress in Adolescents from Schools and Care Practices During and After the Covid-19 Pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on the mental health of children and adolescents. Internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression emerged early on, particularly among those with high pre-pandemic vulnerability. This study investigates the development of psychological difficulties (internalizing, externalizing, and social problems) among adolescents in rural areas after returning to in-person schooling, comparing a non-clinical school-based sample with a clinical sample from child and adolescent mental health services. The study examines whether symptoms persist over time, the role of attachment quality, and the potential buffering effect of early therapeutic intervention. At two time points, 46 adolescents (M_T1age = 14.65 years, SD = 1.08; M_T2age = 16.05 years, SD = 1.24) were assessed using the Adolescent Separation Anxiety Interview (ASAI) and the Youth Self Report (YSR/ 11-18). Findings indicate that participants were highly affected by pandemic-related measures such as lockdowns, homeschooling, and social isolation. Adolescents with insecure-preoccupied attachment reported the highest symptoms. Symptoms persisted beyond the end of public health restrictions. In contrast, connection to a care network emerged as a resilience factor. These results underscore the urgent need for expanded and more targeted support for youth in coping with crisis-related stress

Joint Shelf Design and Space Planning Problem With Placement Options

    No full text
This article introduces the first joint shelf design and space planning problem that considers two placement options for items—hanging and shelving—on flexible shelves. These types of shelves are used in sectors such as do-it-yourself and toy retail, and for household goods in grocery stores. However, they have received limited attention in the literature, which typically focuses on regular shelves with a single placement option: placing items on shelf panels. The problem requires three interdependent decisions: (1) the placement option for each item (shelving or hanging), (2) the shelf design (number and vertical positioning of shelf panels), and (3) the shelf space planning (assignment of facings as well as the vertical and horizontal positioning of items). We formalize this problem as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) and develop a greedy multi-start matheuristic to efficiently solve practical instances. Computational experiments demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms both a commercial solver and a benchmark method for two-dimensional shelf space planning in terms of runtime and solution quality. A comprehensive analysis of synthetic instances and a real-world case study provides several managerial insights. First, hanging items enables more flexible use of shelf space, which is especially beneficial when item variety is high. However, when large vertical grabbing gaps must be considered, stacking items on shelf panels may be more advantageous. In turn, there is a risk of wasted space due to height or width mismatches. Second, the number and size of the segments on the shelf significantly influence layout profitability, highlighting the need to jointly optimize shelf design and space allocation. Third, it is common practice to arrange hanging items in horizontal rows, which can be facilitated by segmenting the shelf space. While this improves visual appeal, increasing the number of segments tends to reduce overall space utilization and profitability. Finally, a real-world case study involving 237 products across six categories from a European grocery retailer confirms the practical applicability of our approach. It demonstrates significant potential for improving space utilization and layout efficiency

Intrastate conflict and transformation of the media system : The case of Afghanistan

    No full text
This study aims to extend the media system framework to analyse the transformation process of media systems within fragile states that suffer from intrastate conflict. This theoretical goal is achieved through the scrutinization of the transformation of the Afghan media system throughout the Taliban takeover. Through conducting 21 semi-structured interviews with Afghan journalists, the authors examined the Afghan media system before, during and after the intrastate conflict escalation in 2021. The results showed that the media system in Afghanistan was highly fragmented before the Taliban took over. Consequently, the Taliban capitalized on this fragmented structure by optimizing an effective digital propaganda campaign that facilitated their victory in 2021. As a result of this armed victory, the Taliban started their campaign to control the communication sphere, forming an authoritarian proto-state media system. The results help to enhance comparative media systems analysis and to refine dynamic and conflict-related aspects
