Dynamics and Signatures of an Emergent Gauge Field
One of the most profound predictions of modern condensed matter physics is that gauge theories
may emerge naturally in the low-energy description of certain solid state systems. This is in
stark contrast with particle physics, where gauge theories have to be postulated. Emergent gauge
theories often bring with them quasiparticles that carry fractions of a fundamental quantum
number, holding the potential to revolutionize quantum technologies.
The paradigmatic Kitaev model, an exactly solvable quantum spin liquid, realizes an
emergent static Z2 gauge field and itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to it. Remarkably,
there is a large class of materials that have shown significant promise for realizing this exotic
phase of matter. Despite tremendous experimental efforts, a conclusive proof of emergent
gauge fields and fractionalized excitations of the Kitaev spin liquid has remained elusive. Any
material realizations of this model inevitably contain interactions that break the integrability of
the model, and make the gauge fields dynamical. Understanding the properties this dynamical
emergent gauge field is crucial for predicting its observable signatures in real materials.
In this thesis, we develop a comprehensive theory of dynamical gauge fields in the Kitaev
spin liquid, weakly perturbed away from its integrable limit. We focus on the dynamical
properties of the fundamental gauge excitation - the vison, dressed by a cloud of Majorana
fermions.
Through a controlled perturbation theory, we calculate the dispersion of a single vison,
induced by an off-diagonal exchange term and an external magnetic field h. Our findings
reveal that the sign of the Kitaev interaction has a profound influence on the dynamical
and topological properties of visons. While they can move efficiently and coherently in the
ferromagnetic Kitaev model, their motion in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev model is
driven by the an incoherent, Majorana-assisted hopping. Remarkably, in the presence of an
external magnetic field, visons of the AFM Kitaev model become topological, predicting a
novel contribution to the thermal Hall effect. The massless Majorana fermions scatter from the
vison’s gauge flux in a highly singular manner. Employing a modified Boltzmann formalism to
capture this behavior, we show that it leads to a universal mobility in the low-temperature (T)
limit, μ(T) = 6ℏv_m
(k_B T)^2 , where v_m is the velocity of Majorana fermions.
Motivated by the layered three-dimensional (3D) structure of candidate materials, we
investigate the gauge field dynamics in weakly coupled multilayer Kitaev spin liquids. The
interplay of novel conservation laws and robust topological constraints prevents single vison
motion, leading instead to a variety of dynamic vison-pairs. The conservation laws put strong
constraints on the motion of these excitations. Depending on the stacking pattern, inter-layer
pairs may exhibit a fully two-dimensional (2D) motion within the layers, or a highly restricted
one-dimensional mobility. Intra-layer pairs can, however, move across layers, with the direction
of motion determined by the stacking pattern. Furthermore, we show how the anisotropy of
Kitaev couplings strongly influences the coherence of interlayer tunnelling.
In the final part, we focus on two experimental signatures of mobile visons: Raman
spectroscopy and the thermal Hall effect. Using an effective two-particle model of visons, we
calculate the low-energy Raman response of visons in a generic ferromagnetic Kitaev spin
liquid. Our results reveal distinct signatures of anyonic statistics in the continuum response and
sharp peaks associated with anyon-bound states. Notably, these sharp peaks exhibit a strong
sensitivity to the chirality of Raman light, a feature observed in several experiments. Finally,
we provide a detailed calculation of the thermal Hall effect resulting from dynamical visons in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model, discussing its implications for experimental detection
Entrepreneurial ecosystems and start-ups in Germany: Regional approaches to innovation and ecological sustainability
Start-ups are increasingly recognized as key drivers of both economic competitiveness and ecological sustainability in advanced economies. However, the geographical conditions that enable these dual objectives – particularly through the lens of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) – remain largely unexplored. This is especially relevant in the context of Germany, which, despite its advanced economy, exhibits a globally underperforming and regionally uneven start-up ecosystem.
The overarching aim of this dissertation is to analyze how regional EEs contribute to two distinct yet complementary forms of entrepreneurship: product-innovative start-ups, which promote economic competitiveness through novel goods and services, and green start-ups, which embed ecological sustainability into their core business models. A regional approach is essential, as EEs are inherently place-based and shaped by locally varying social, economic, and infrastructural conditions that influence start-up success. Drawing on quantitative firm-level data from the IAB/ZEW Start-up Panel, this dissertation employs econometric analyses to examine the relationships between EEs and start-ups engaging in product innovation and green business activities at the regional level in three empirical papers.
The findings of the first paper (Chapter 3) show that EEs can influence product innovation in start-ups – but with varying effectiveness across regions. In particular, the urban-rural context plays a decisive role in determining how innovation drivers take effect. This highlights the need for place-sensitive policy measures to support product innovation across different regions. By contrast, the second paper (Chapter 4) shows that many EE components are not inherently unsuitable across region types but rather misaligned with the specific needs of green start-ups. The findings reveal a partial mismatch between existing EEs and the requirements of green start-ups – robust across urban, intermediate, and rural regions. This underscores the need for purpose-sensitive adaptations in EEs to overcome systemic lock-ins that inhibit green entrepreneurial activity. The third paper (Chapter 5) deepens this line of argument by investigating alternative, purpose-aligned ecosystem indicators. Using the example of cycling infrastructure, it demonstrates how physical infrastructure in traditional EEs can be reoriented to more effectively support green start-ups. The results show a statistically significant positive relationship between the share of cycling infrastructure and green start-up activity at the regional level in Germany – robust across urban, intermediate, and rural regions.
Taken together, the findings of this dissertation contribute to the theoretical advancement of the EE concept by underscoring the importance of purpose- and place-sensitive adaptations for supporting diverse forms of entrepreneurial activity. Furthermore, the dissertation offers practical insights for regional policymakers seeking to foster innovation for competitiveness and ecological sustainability in Germany’s economy. It emphasizes the need for regionally tailored strategies and a reorientation of certain traditional EE components – such as targeted investments in cycling infrastructure
Computational study of aqueous geochemical fluids at high temperature and pressure
Aqueous fluids play a critical role in the evolution of the Earth - starting from the atmosphere to the deep Earth. They are important carriers of heat energy and matter thereby playing an important role in several chemical reactions that determine the geochemistry of the Earth's interior. Hydrothermal solutions in the Earth reduce the melting point of rocks leading to the formation of volcanoes and plate tectonics. Lower water activity compared to CO2 in the Venusian crust leads to an increase in the melting point of rocks at elevated pressure which hinders plate tectonics. In a way, it is because of the aqueous fluid induced dynamic nature that several lifeforms have sustained on our planet. Hydrothermal fluids also play a dominant role in mobilising several strategically important elements followed by their precipitation resulting in the formation of ore deposits. Elements mobilised and deposited by aqueous fluids depend on the chemical composition and the prevalent thermodynamic conditions. As a result detailed understanding of the chemical structure and composition of hydrothermal fluids under geological conditions is warranted. Several spectroscopic studies have been conducted over the years to delineate the speciation of aqueous fluids. These have been accompanied by high temperature and high pressure experiments with devices like hydrothermal autoclaves, pressure vessels or heated/hydrothermal diamond anvil cells that aim to determine different physical and transport properties of aqueous fluids. However, these experiments are limited in their temperature, pressure and composition ranges.
Ever since computers became available for unclassified scientific research, consistent effort has been made to implement fundamental laws of physics (like Newton's Laws of Motion, Schrödinger Equation) thereby providing insights into the structure and dynamics of natural systems on the atomistic scale. Development of more advanced and efficient hardware has made use of MD simulations realizable in studying different fluid rock interaction processes. These studies not only complement available experimental data but also provide an alternate framework to verify various assumptions and simplifications in existing theoretical models of fluids. In addition to these, MD simulations can provide insights into the structure and composition of aqueous geochemical fluids at conditions difficult to simulate in laboratories.
In this thesis different types of MD simulations have been used to study geochemical fluids with different compositions at supercritical conditions. Different target properties are calculated and compared against available experimental data using DFT based AIMD simulations and CMD simulations. This provides discernment in the precision and accuracy of these techniques at geological conditions. In the different chapters of the thesis, we study properties of important solvents as well as solutes and the impact of different simulation parameters on them. In Chapter 3, we show that the GGA XC functional like BLYP and meta-GGA XC functional like r2SCAN predicts similar structural properties of aqueous H2SO4 and Na2SO4 solutions at supercritical conditions. Using r2SCAN gives better estimates of the different vibrational modes of oxidized sulfur species as compared to the BLYP functional. However, the predicted vibrational frequencies are still underestimated in comparison to experimental data. Both the functionals reproduce the temperature-induced shifts in different vibrational modes. Electrical conductivity of NaCl solutions in supercritical conditions are calculated with ReaxFF and pairwise SPC/E models in Chapter 4. We show that although ReaxFF is a polarizable, dissociative forcefield fitted on lots of QC data, its accuracy is not good in predicting a property (in this case electrical conductivity) not explicitly present in the training dataset. In Chapter 5, a new ab initio based PIM interaction potential is developed at supercritical conditions. We discuss fundamental issues related to transferability of interaction potentials and establish the superiority of the newly developed interaction potential in predicting structural and thermodynamic properties of La3+ in chloride bearing hydrothermal fluids.
Overall, although state of the art techniques are precise and give important information about the geochemistry of supercritical fluids, significant scope of improvement exists. The thesis also serves to give an overview of fundamental issues related to the 'art' of interaction potential development that has to be kept in mind in future projects. This includes cardinal questions like XC functional to be used in generation of training data, types of data to be included in the training set and functional form of the potential to be fitted
