    Nominalized Infinitive Clauses in Spanish

    Get PDF
This dissertation investigates Nominalized Infinitive Clauses (NICs) in Spanish—infinitival constructions marked by an overt determiner, that function syntactically as noun phrases while retaining internal verbal structure (e.g., 'el no saber qué pasará me está volviendo loco'). Framed within the Functional Nominalization Thesis, this work argues that NICs are DP-nominalizations with a nominal layer dominating a fully verbal projection. These structures crucially differ from other infinitival nominalizations by their exclusion from non-factive predicates. The first part of the dissertation offers a formal analysis of NICs in relation to other nominal and clausal structures, including 'el que'-clauses and Greek 'to oti'-clauses. The second part explores the semantics of definiteness and genericity, showing that the definite article in NICs is not required for referentiality, but emerges under specific pragmatic and predicate-driven conditions. An experimental study on native speaker judgments reveals that the presence of the definite article is dispreferred across contexts, challenging prior claims that it reflects factivity or is syntactically obligatory. Ultimately, the dissertation poses the idea that all embedded clauses in Spanish are to be analyzed as DPs, and that NICs provide key insight into the interaction between clause structure, nominalization, and referential meaning

Financial Devolution in Community-Based Conservation in Southern Africa

This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of financial devolution in communitybased natural resource management (CBNRM) across the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), focusing on Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It offers a large-scale overview and comparison of how national governance strategies have shaped financial devolution in these countries, emphasizing the role of local communities in conservation efforts. Despite the decentralization trend since the 1980s and 1990s, the study finds significant variation in financial autonomy, with challenges such as elite capture, revenue recentralization, and restricted local decision-making. Through case studies within the borders of the KAZA TFCA, it highlights disparities in wildlife-revenue management and financial independence. The thesis concludes that stronger devolution frameworks and improved governance structures are essential for sustainable CBNRM and long-term conservation success in the region

Application of Population Pharmacokinetic Modeling to Assess Kidney Function and Renal Excretion of Substances in Humans

Creatinine is a widely used endogenous biomarker for eGFR and was studied through a refined popPK model that estimated CGR and Vd using data from retrospective and prospective studies. A key advancement of this work is the development of a joint creatinine/iohexol model, which enabled more precise assessment of renal function by incorporating nCTS as a parameter to evaluate OCT2/MATE-mediated tubular secretion. This approach may improve differentiation between glomerular and tubular function in clinical settings, offering a more accurate method for renal function assessment compared to traditional creatinine-based equations. However, the accuracy of the joint model remains constrained by external factors, such as uncertainties in creatinine absorption and the small clinical sample size. The refined creatinine model was successfully applied to patients undergoing cardiac surgery to evaluate the degree of AKI and its association with potential contributing factors. However, the once-daily sampling schedule was not sufficient to generate substantial additional information on renal function using the model compared to raw concentration data. To enhance the utility of the model, more samples should be taken early after surgery, and it may be beneficial to administer iohexol before and shortly after surgery to assess AKI. Furthermore, the degree of AKI in these patients was limited in extent and duration, suggesting that more detailed monitoring may be relevant only in patients with risk factors. Vancomycin is primarily excreted renally, making accurate renal function assessment crucial for optimizing dosing. This dissertation developed a vancomycin popPK model, incorporating estimated CrCL as a predictor for systemic clearance and CSF protein concentration as a predictor for CSF penetration. Monte Carlo simulations were employed to evaluate the probability of achieving PK/PD targets while ensuring systemic exposure remained within the therapeutic range across various dosing regimens. Additionally, the model confirmed the feasibility of using distal port CSF sampling for TDM in patients with EVDs. However, the study was limited by sparse sampling, small sample size, and absence of measured GFR, which restricted exploration of the relationship between renal function and vancomycin clearance. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the value of popPK modeling in improving renal function assessment and vancomycin dosing optimization, particularly through creatinine-based approaches. Future research should focus on refining these models with larger, more diverse datasets, and exploring simpler, more practical sampling strategies to improve accuracy and clinical applicability

The working conditions of female factory workers in the textile and garment sector. A case study of an Ethiopian industrial park

The study aimed to assess the decency of the working conditions of female textile and garment factory workers in an Ethiopian industrial park by exploring the overall gendered working environment. To this end, a case study research design based mainly on primary data sources was employed. While the samples for the study were chosen based on non-probability purposive sampling techniques, the discussion mainly draws on primary data sources gathered through key informant interviews with female workers at two foreign-earned factories in a single industrial park. Then, the collected data were analyzed using descriptive data source triangulation. The study's findings revealed that most textile and garment manufacturing employees are young females with primary-level education and some have TVIT/diploma certificates. However, the findings showed that the employment opportunities granted to female workers at the park came at the expense of their fundamental labor rights. On the other hand, the experience at one of the factories showed the chance of realizing decent job opportunities in the textile and garment sector. To this end, the researcher suggests the Ethiopian government should set a minimum wage limit, implement effective labor inspection and monitoring mechanisms, and promote investment policies supporting responsible investment practices
