Abstract
The present work tries to know the necessary conditions so that women can and want to develop their life and work projects in the Spanish rural environment. For that purpose, women's first-hand information is collected using participatory techniques, using the Spanish National Rural Network as a platform for dissemination. Women are a fundamental part of the structure of the rural environment, being the protagonist of population migration to urban areas due to their dissatisfaction with their conditions. Paradoxically, the role of women is necessary for the demographic sustainability of the rural environment since it is a large population group that generally has a high level of training and, potentially, can generate employment and income by practicing non-agricultural economic activities. Women's impressions were collected using a nationwide survey in online mode. In a complementary way, an online seminar (Focus Group) is organized in two days, aiming to gather four different women profiles whose life or work experience is closely related to the rural environment.
The results from the survey and seminar allow us to propose an Action Plan that will be launched from the National Rural Network for six months, carrying out activities such as interviews with rural women to disseminate their experiences in various formats, offer of courses and workshops on entrepreneurship and management, creation of a directory of agents and associations in rural areas to create a network of contacts
Contribution of gut microbiota to Anastomotic Leakage in colorectal surgery and its prediction by Machine Learning approach
ABSTRACT
Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most life-threatening complications after surgery in colorectal cancer patients. Direct predictive factors have not been described yet; therefore, AL can not be prevented and has not decreased over time. Strong scientific evidence suggests that gut microbiota may be involved; however, the implication of specific bacteria is vague. In this research, faecal and biopsy samples from 111 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer that underwent resective surgery at Hospital Universitario Ramon y Cajal over two years were collected. The aim of this thesis was to characterise the cultivable and non-cultivable microbiota in both faecal samples and mucosal biopsies (proximal and distal to the tumour). Furthermore, to test several machine learning (ML) models in clinical data and microbiota composition to predict AL formation. Over the two years, 10 (9%) patients developed AL (AL+ group). In the virulent factor’s experiment, results showed a statistical significance between the groups (AL+ and rAL−/reduced control group) for the gelE (80% vs 16.6% in Enterococcus faecalis and 20% vs 50% in Enterococcus faecium) and the agg genes (100% vs 33% E. faecalis). Despite that, no statistical significance was found from the strains of the AL+ patients in the collagenase/protease study, E. faecium showed a high protease production, and E. faecalis had a high collagenase production in this group. Diversity analysis showed that the proximal and distal biopsies were significantly different between the studied groups (AL+ and AL−), while the diversity of the faeces was not significant. ML models showed auspicious results. Clinical predictors of AL were high values in 5-day C-reactive protein (CRP) and heart disease, whereas high values in 3-day CRP and type two diabetes mellitus were negative predictors. According to the results, biopsies from surgical margins, rather than faeces, are the most appropriate sample to explore the contribution of the intestinal microbiota to AL. Finally, the genus Enterococcus is only enriched in the anastomosis after surgery, and their collagenases and proteases are involved in the degradation of the anastomotic scar
Characterization of risk factors for depression using machine learning techniques to generate new knowledge in brain health domain
Depression is a mental disorder that is characterised by feelings of sadness and guilt, low self-worth, and loss of interest or pleasure. It affects almost four percent of the world's population. Although many factors related to depression are known, the prevalence of this disorder makes it necessary to extract new knowledge to generate new clinical hypotheses and to have more resources for both prevention and treatment if the causality is validated. In this work, self-reported health, socio-economic and lifestyle data collected in the context of the Barcelona Brain Health Initiative have been used to generate machine learning models with several classifiers (Logistic regression, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbours, Gradient boosting, and Multilayer perceptron). These data include depression risk factors already reported in the scientific literature and newly variables: life purpose, personal growth, number of psychiatric, neurodegenerative, and total diagnoses, and information about childhood, and social interaction. As a result, three models with similar metrics were obtained, with accuracies near seventy percent, Logistic regression, Random Forest, and Gradient boosting. Models were also generated with these same classifiers for the prediction of gender-specific depression, improving the metrics of the models trained with the full dataset. As a result of the calculation of the Shapley values (relevance metric) of the factors, life purpose, social engagement, psychiatric diagnoses, total diagnoses, and the father’s job during childhood are related to the development of depression disorder
ABSTRACT
During storage, seeds are affected by a number of physiological, genetic and environmental factors that contribute to seed aging and consequently to the loss of seed quality. In this work, the biochemical changes that occur in seeds of Allium cepa L. stored in two water contents (14 and 8% on dry weight) at 35 ºC have been observed. Seed viability and the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR) were studied at different stages of aging.
The results obtained show that the activity of SOD and CAT enzymes was not affected by storage time under wet conditions, in contrast to GR, where significant differences were observed. On the other hand, the activity of CAT and GR was influenced by storage time under dry conditions. It was evidenced that when seed viability decreased up to 25%, a biochemical change occurred resulting in an increase in CAT and GR activity. Finally, SOD enzyme activity experienced a significant increase under wet conditions in all storage periods compared to dry storage. In the case of CAT, an increase was observed under wet conditions compared to dry conditions, especially in seed lots that had reached P50, indicating a 50% reduction in viability. These findings highlight the relevance of moisture conditions during storage and the existence of different aging mechanisms under wet and dry conditions
Design of high-speed data acquisition systems based on the JESD204 interface with Xilinx ZynqMP devices for MicroTCA platforms
Abstract:
MicroTCA (Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture) is widely used in scientific research and large-scale experiments to implement high-speed data acquisition systems. FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) and SoCs (System on Chip) are commonly used as the processing element of the AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Card) modules that build this type of system because FPGA-based devices provide great flexibility and performance, which is leveraged using FMC (FPGA Mezzanine Card) modules to connect the processing device with high-speed data converters. As the resolution and speed of converters have increased, the JESD204 serial interface has been established as the interface of choice for data acquisition FMCs.
This project explores the possibilities and options for implementing a data acquisition and heterogeneous processing system using the latest hardware acceleration methodologies. The target for developing such a system is an AMC module manufactured by NAT Europe, which is equipped with a Xilinx Zynq MPSoC (MultiProcessor SoC). Using Xilinx’s development tools, high-level synthesis languages can be used to implement accelerated functions on the programmable logic region of the device using the OpenCL (Open Computing Language) computing standard.
The developed system integrates two different components. First, a static hardware design implemented on the FPGA provides both the infrastructure for the JESD204 interface and the resources required to support accelerated functions or kernels. Second, an embedded Linux distribution that runs on the ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) cores present in the SoC configures the peripherals implemented in the FPGA fabric and manages the OpenCL runtime.
This document explains the procedure used to verify the correct functioning of the system's hardware and software parts. In addition, an example data acquisition application is developed using OpenCL and high-level synthesis to demonstrate the system's usefulness for acquiring signals from a converter located in an FMC module. As a result, a fully functional system has been obtained that can be used to implement high-speed data acquisition applications requiring high processing capabilities. All this with the advantage of being able to implement them using high-level synthesis languages, reducing the development time and increasing the level of abstraction
Design of an Inventory Management application based on web technologies
Abstract:
There has been considerable overhaul of commerce and supply-chain processes and strategies during the last decade, greatly because of the advent and growth of web technologies into consumers’ day-to-day life and employers’ management of operations throughout virtually all industries and in both small and large businesses. This highlights the need these businesses have to optimize their processes regarding inventory management and its related endeavours such as trade and fulfilment with manufacturers, customers, and other third parties associated with their operations.
The following project is aimed to build a basic but functional infrastructure of a web application to address these needs and provide a scalable and performant interface where potential users could customize their inventories and keep track of their operations. Only a reduced set of features is delivered, but it is preceded by a comprehensive technical analysis to allow the aforementioned infrastructure to optimally support the addition of further features, the integration of new services, and its potential for scalability.
The project’s execution and organizational aspects are approached within a competitive context, which entails the exploration and evaluation of different technologies, methodologies and resources that would provide both a viable solution under real market conditions, an important aspect of any engineering project, as well as the improvement of teamwork processes. These resources are evaluated both for technical and non-technical criteria, as all of these may considerately influence a project’ feasibility.
The resulting solution provides a small set of inventory configuration and stock availability features which, despite its reduced scope, allow for great customization of inventories’ structures and taxonomy through simple and consistent interfaces. It consists of an API implementation that’s both uniform and flexible, with development patterns allowing easy extension and addition of features, as well as a minimal but scalable infrastructure, which would facilitate delivery and continuous integration. Certain design aspects were found to hinder performance, particularly related to database querying, but an examination of the codebase’s interactions with the data layer helped determine the causes for this, so a number of viable solutions of varying relevance could be proposed.
Delineation of Soil Management Zones and Validation through the Vigour of a Fodder Crop
In Mediterranean farming systems, the semi-arid conditions and agricultural ecosystems have made site-specific management an important approach. This method aims to understand and handle the variability of soil properties and crop management, particularly through the utilization of geospatial information and accessible technology. Over three years in a 30 ha experimental field located in the Alentejo region (Portugal), crop establishment was monitored using data from soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), remote sensing (Sentinel-2), and in situ soil sampling. The procedure began with Step 1, involving the acquisition of soil spatial information and spatial interpolation. Subsequently, in Step 2, management zones (MZs) for soil characteristics were delineated using a combination of ECa measurements and soil analysis, and Step 3 spanned over three years of gathering meteorological data and crop remote sensing measurements. In Step 4, site-specific crop MZs were delineated by vegetation indexes (VIs). This article aims to increase the importance of in situ and remote assessments to more accurately identify areas with different productive potential. Results showed three MZs based on the percentage of sand, ECa, altimetry, exchangeable calcium, and exchangeable calcium properties, validated by crop VIs (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Red-Edge Index (NDRE), and Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI)) over time. Although there are many sensorial techniques available for site-specific management, this paper emphasizes a methodology for the farmer to identify different MZs combining remote and in situ evaluations, supporting new opportunities for a more rational use of natural resources. Based on soil parameters, three site-specific management areas could be selected. NDMI was the index that best explained the MZs created according to soil properties

Abstract:
The rise of photovoltaic solar energy, which will continue to increase over the years, is the result of the energy decarbonization process in which the entire planet is immersed.
With this boom, the detection of faults and defects in photovoltaic modules has gained importance, an early diagnosis can optimize production and reduce maintenance costs in photovoltaic plants. Cell breakage, normally due to mechanical or thermal stress, is a type of defect that reduces module performance in terms of both energy efficiency and lifetime. Cell imaging by photoluminescence or electroluminescence are techniques that provide diagnostics of the devices but require conditions of maximum darkness in a laboratory.
The objectives of this project are the assembly, commissioning and characterization of a tool for defect detection by photoluminescence imaging that allows the identification of defects in cells but relaxing the dark conditions and without the need to disassemble the modules to be tested, which reduces the cost of the operation.
This tool consists of: a pulsed light source formed by a driver circuit based on Boost DC/DC converter, which excite LED arrays to provide a pulsed light (flash) in the infrared spectrum; a camera with an InGaAs sensor that, together with the use of optical filters to maximize the signal, will capture the photoluminescent image; a Raspberry which, together with a control software, will be in charge of controlling the parameters to take the image and the synchronization between the light pulse (flash) and the image acquisition; and batteries to power the electronics of the excitation circuits.
Some of the elements that make up the system had been previously developed in other works, such as the flash control electronics and the software. But they had not been tested together. This project has focused on the development of the missing elements such as the flashlight, the integration of the different subsystems and the commissioning and validation of the tool. The tests performed will be described and the results obtained will be shown using photoluminescence images of photovoltaic modules.
The synchronization process between the infrared flashlight and the image acquisition has been one of the central aspects of the work. Some specific electronic circuits have been developed to quantify the latency of the LED flash and camera.
The whole process of assembly, commissioning, characterization and use of the tool was carried out at the Solar Energy Institute, which has the means for the electronic assembly and test such as a pick-and- place and a reflow oven, as well as the usual laboratory equipment (signal generators, oscilloscope and power supply). The work has served to certify the correct operation of the tool
Abstract:
One of the greatest challenges facing humanity today is to reduce its environmental impact and achieve greater sustainability. In this context, technology has made significant advances in the last century.
One of the major issues to be addressed is that of energy. We must move away from fossil fuels, on which we have based our development and industry, towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. Energy sources such as solar energy have therefore gained much momentum as their use can mitigate the release of CO2 into the atmosphere.
The agricultural sector is responsible for approximately 5% of the world’s energy consumption, according to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). Conscious of the importance of reducing the environmental impact of this industry, efforts have been made to promote the use of renewable energies such as photovoltaic solar energy in agricultural irrigation.
Furthermore, the agricultural world has suffered a large increase in its energy costs for irrigation. In Spain, for example, it is estimated that costs have increased by 600% to 1200% compared to costs in the year 2008, making farmers seek more sustainable and economical solutions to preserve viability of their farms.
Solar photovoltaic energy offers numerous advantages in the agricultural sector. In addition to contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions, it can bring electricity to remote locations that lack grid infrastructure. This is particularly relevant for farms located in rural areas or far from urban centers.
This project aims to provide farmers with information on how to use solar photovoltaic energy in the irrigation systems of their farms. For this purpose, we have counted on their collaboration, providing data on their needs in order to design a system, simulate its productivity, performance and costs to be able to implement these photovoltaic irrigation systems,
By using the simulation tool SISIFO (https://sisifo.info) developed by the Solar Energy Institute of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with the support of the European Commission through the PVCROPS and MASLOWATEN projects, we can design, scale and simulate photovoltaic irrigation systems. This allows farmers to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of solar photovoltaic energy on their farms before making any investment
