vera) i Sveriges framtida klimat.
This study investigates the possibility for cultivating pomegranates (Punica granatum) and pistachios
(Pistacia vera) in Sweden’s future climate. By using simulated climate data based on two representative
concentration pathways (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5), the study analyzes whether temperature changes may
make Sweden’s climate more suitable for these heat-demanding crops. The study focuses on areas in
Sweden where most of the country’s current apple cultivation takes place, analyzing temperature and
precipitation patterns for the periods 2041–2070 and 2071–2100. Results show that apple cultivation
currently occurs primarily in Scania (Skåne) and Jönköping County, with Scania offering the most favorable
conditions for future cultivation of both pomegranates and pistachios due to rising temperatures and
longer growing seasons.
However, careful assessment of irrigation needs and consideration of soil quality will be necessary
to ensure sustainable cultivation. The study concludes that climate change may present
opportunities to diversify Swedish agriculture, but environmental challenges must be addressed to
enable long-term sustainability
Kronskadornas omfattning beror på brandens intensitet i närheten av trädet samt trädets höjd.I have investigated how the growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is affected by fire. The evaluation was made by measuring the width of annual rings on trees in six areas in Västerbotten, which had been burned for conservation purposes 3-23 years earlier, and which had varying degree of crown scorch. Immediately after the fire, growth decreased on average to 75%, compared to the 5-year period before the fire, and then gradually recovered. The recovery was related to the proportion of the crown that had been lost in the fire. The greater the crown loss, the longer the recovery time. The recovery time was about 6-8 years for crown loss of less than 50%. In the case of a greater crown loss, recovery had not returned to the original level even 10 years after the fire. These results are in agreement with results from stem pruning studies. The extent of crown damage depends on the intensity of the fire in the vicinity of the tree and the height of the tree
Modelling Power-to-Gas for FCR-D-participation : a techno-economic analysis
The concept of converting electricity into a gaseous energy carrier, power-to-gas (PtG), sits at an interesting intersection coupling the power grid with chemical energy storage. By using electrolytic hydrogen to convert otherwise unused CO2 from biogas production into methane, local production of renewable fuels can be increased. Incorporating hydrogen storage allows for a more flexible operation based on electricity prices or excess renewable generation. In addition, due to the flexible power usage of the electrolyser, it has the possibility to participate on grid frequency balancing markets such as FCR-D. This could provide additional income, thus having the potential to increase the economic performance of the system.
This master’s thesis developed a model which simulates the effects of FCR-D participation of an electrolyzer in a PtG-system consisting of a biogas plant, wastewater treatment plant, electrolyzer, hydrogen storage and methanation reactor. The model was developed in Python and calculated the hourly possible reserved power on the FCR-D market by the electrolyzer based on the maximum allowed deviations of the electrolyzer operation and the corresponding effects on hydrogen production. It also calculated the hourly averaged FCR-D activation based on frequency data and FCR-D requirements, as well as introduced a secondary hydrogen storage available only for the FCR-D operation (”buffer storage”). The yearly PtG operation was then simulated for 2021 for 304 different configurations of electrolyzer size, hydrogen storage size and buffer storage size in order to analyze how these different configurations affected the main Key Performance Index Levelized Cost of Power-to-Gas (LCOPtG). This thesis also compared selected configurations’ LCOPtG when participating as a FCR-D reserve versus when not participating. A sensitivity analysis for these selected configurations regadring changes in electricity price, FCR-D price and year was also conducted.
The results show that LCOPtG decreased when the system participated as a FCR-D reserve, regardless of which configuration was used. The ability to reserve power on the FCR-D market, which corresponds to the income from FCR-D participation, increased as the electrolyzer size and buffer storage size increased, which resulted in lower LCOPtG even if the investment cost also increased. In turn, the sensitivity analysis showed that these oversized configurations were more prone to changes in LCOPtG when price and year changed, showing that the configurations with the lowest LCOPtG were also the most affected by varying cicumstances. Thus, the conclutions of this thesis are that FCR-D participation has the potential of increasing PtG profitability, but depends greatly on the system dimentions. Lastly, additional studies regarding this subject are needed in order to validate results and increase understanding of the intricacies of these systems.
Kelo deadwood – an increasingly rare substrate for fungal species
A great threat to forest biodiversity in Sweden is the limited amount of high quality deadwood substrate. The high species diversity associated with deadwood is influenced by a variety of factors, including tree species, microclimate, the stage of decay and the size of the wood. Kelo pine is a unique type of deadwood that is a common element in pristine pine-dominated forests, and a vital substrate for many species of wood-inhabiting fungi. With modern forest practices, pines do not grow old enough for new formation of kelo deadwood to be possible. This makes it more important than ever to study fungal communities associated with this increasingly rare substrate, to determine whether the same fungal species can inhabit other types of deadwood or if they risk extinction alongside the declining number of kelo pines. By collecting sawdust and analysing them through DNA metabarcoding to identify fungal eDNA, I investigated how species composition and species richness differ in pine deadwood of different qualities. The type of pine deadwood had a significant impact on fungal species assemblage composition for all substrate types. Furthermore, no relationship was found between assemblage composition and the microclimatic variables sun exposure and ground contact. Kelo deadwood had a significantly lower species richness compared to all other substrate types, but hosted unique species (including red-listed) not found in other substrate types. In conclusion, these results support earlier findings that highlight the ecological uniqueness of kelo deadwood and the importance of preserving this increasingly rare substrate to support fungal biodiversity in managed forest landscapes
How are signal species affected by changing management practices in meadows and pastures? : changes in management regimes linked to the presence of signal species
The coevolution of plants with megaherbivores after the last ice age led to some plants adapting to a disturbance regime characterized by grazing and trampling. When the megaherbivores died out,
human agriculture, including hay meadows and pastures, took over their role in the ecosystem and managed it for hundreds of years. The continued coevolution with hay and grazing (management) meant that some plants coped with disturbance and limited access to nutrients better than other plants. These plants are called positive indicator species for their characteristics. Those that canot cope with grazing disturbance, and gain competitive advantages with increased access to nutrients are called negative indicator species.
The purpose of the study is to investigate whether there is any connection between changed habitat and changed occurrence of both positive and negative signal species. Where the hypotheses are that:
- if habitat increases, positive signal species increase and negative signal species decrease,
- if habitat decreases, negative signal species increase and positive signal species decrease.
The positive signal species included in the study are rattle species (Rhinanthus L) and lady's bedstraw (Galium verum). Negative signal species in the study are meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and wood cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum). All data is taken from the TUVA database, which contains inventories from a total of 85,000 premises in 258,500 hectares of meadows and pastures.
Selection and statistical analysis were done in Excel. The selection was made from two inventories for each species at each location, where the status of the species and the species occurrence were selected. The selection was arranged in cross-tabulations for each species and tested with a chi-square test for independence for the relationship between management and species occurrence.
The results were very widespread among the species; the hypotheses were partially correct for two species, rattles and meadowsweet. Beyond them, no hypothesis was accurate with the results.
The fact that the results did not match the hypotheses may be due to several different reasons. Some reasons may include mowing too early, grazing pressure that is too low or too high, the site having undergone a conservation burn before the inventory, competition within groups of negative signal species in the site, competition within groups of positive signal species in the site, nutrients released from dead roots during restoration, etc.
The dynamics of meadows and pastures mean that time perspectives are long, which is why it would give a more reliable result if the same study were done after a third inventory has been carried out
When the city recharges : strategy for sustainability and innovation in urban environments with the help of renewable energy
This thesis explores how the energy-smart and attractive city can be planned and
designed to integrate renewable energy, energy efficiency, and at the same time
promote human well-being. The ongoing energy transition and the need to move
towards a sustainable city through local energy production in urban environments
are the starting point for the thesis. To support the study, literature reviews,
international case studies, and site visits in Malmö have been made to investigate
strategies for implementing renewable energy and energy-saving measures in
public urban spaces.
A central aspect of the work has been to make energy structures visible and
integrate them into people's everyday environments. The smaller design proposals
demonstrate how solar energy, for example, can become part of artistic
installations, thereby enhancing the character of the site while softening the visual
impact of technical infrastructure in the urban landscape. The thesis also discusses
the importance of participatory processes and public attitudes toward renewable
energy structures, highlighting how local anchoring and aesthetic expression play
crucial roles in the public acceptance of renewable energy in the city.
The thesis concludes that involving local communities in the planning process is
essential to reduce resistance and increase acceptance for renewable energy in the
city. Energy savings can be achieved in two ways, firstly, through battery storage
systems and secondly, by promoting energy-efficient behaviors and sustainable
transportation systems. By striving towards an energy transition with the help of
renewable energy, it can contribute to improved air quality, which in turn has a
positive impact on human health and well-being
Does oligotrophication induce cyanotoxin production and accumulation in food webs of Arctic/alpine lakes?
Arctic/alpine lakes in Sweden are facing nutrient declines, i.e., oligotrophication, and intensified nitrogen (N)-limitation due to climate change and associated landscape alterations. These changes are expected to promote nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (N2-fixers) in primary producer communities in benthic biofilms of the lakes. Many N2-fixers are able to produce potent, harmful cyanotoxins. This study investigated whether increases in dominance of N2-fixers affected the prevalence and accumulation of cyanotoxins – including microcystins and nodularins (as a group; MC), cylindrospermopsin, and anatoxin-a – in benthic biofilms and macroinvertebrates from nine Swedish Arctic/alpine lakes. Cyanotoxins were commonly detected in the samples. Cyanotoxin concentrations quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were generally positively correlated. Data showed strong positive correlations of the relative biomass of N2-fixers with the concentrations of cylindrospermopsin and anatoxin-a but not MC in biofilms. Most macroinvertebrate samples had higher cyanotoxin concentrations than the biofilms, indicating trophic transfer and bioaccumulation of cyanotoxins. Yet, cyanotoxin bioaccumulation did not differ among functional feeding groups of the benthic macroinvertebrates, possibly due to limited numbers of samples collected. Benthic macroinvertebrates are the key prey for fish including Arctic char and brown trout in Arctic/alpine lakes. Thus, with increases in dominance of N2-fixers in benthic biofilms driven by lake oligotrophication and intensified N-limitation, fish likely will face increased exposure to cyanotoxins in diet or in water. This study highlights the importance of monitoring cyanotoxin risks in Arctic/alpine lakes, and the necessity of further investigating cyanotoxin bioaccumulation in the food web components especially fish
The influence of metabolic performance on pharmaceutical bioconcentration in brown trout (Salmo trutta)
The increasing global detection of pharmaceutical contaminants in aquatic ecosystems is of significant environmental concern. Especially concerning are pharmaceuticals that affect non target species like fish through bioconcentration of pharmaceutical contaminants, which can have severe ecological consequences. Ecotoxicological studies are increasing but few studies have focused on what factors determine bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals in fish tissues. Metabolic performance plays a vital role in essential functions such as growth, reproduction, and movement and is hypothesized to play an important role in the intake and further bioaccumulation of contaminants. This study aimed to examine the effect of metabolic performance on the bioconcentration of the pharmaceutical oxazepam, comparing concentrations during two different exposure times. Additionally, I looked at possible predictors of metabolic performance in brown trout (Salmo trutta) from two different hatchery strains. Their metabolic performance was assessed in an intermittent respirometry setup by measuring their standard metabolic rate (SMR), maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and absolute aerobic scope (AAS). Afterwards the fish were exposed to an oxazepam concentration of 18 μg/L for a short period of 24 hours and a longer one of seven days. The results revealed a significantly higher concentration of oxazepam in trout’s blood plasma during the exposure time of seven days as well as a significantly higher concentration for fish showing increased metabolic performance. The results also showed that length was a predictor of all metabolic measurement AAS, SMR and MMR but not exhaustion time. The results highlight the significance of studying the mechanisms and factors driving bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals in fish, including the role of metabolic performance for predicting the movement of contaminants through aquatic food chains, evaluating long-term ecological risks and implementation of conservation management strategies, especially as pharmaceutical consumption continues to rise worldwide
How long does a generational transition take? : a study on the obstacles to farm succession
Europa.
It is said that it takes 15 years to make a decision about a generational change. This is perhaps not
so strange considering that it is one of the largest and most extensive processes in a farmer's life.
Many wait too long, postpone the process and instead end up with a change of inheritance. Farmers
handing over their farms at an advanced age in combination with a generational change that takes a
long time risks having consequences for our domestic food production. Over the past 30 years,
self sufficiency in food in Sweden has decreased from 75% to 50%.
Therefore, it is important to identify obstacles so that generational changes do not take too long.
The purpose of the report is to find out what Swedish farmers have had their own experiences of
generational changes. The question to be answered is, how long does a generational change take?
and are there any obstacles that have caused the process to stop?
Those selected for interview are active Swedish farmers who have taken over a farm where the
generational change is complete. It is a qualitative research method where people are allowed to
share their opinions and experiences
At the end of a farmer's life, it is time to hand over their farm to someone else, most commonly the
transfer takes place within the family. Generational change as a concept assumes that the new owner
is within the family. Change of ownership is generally a broader concept but functions similarly
with the same process, although it takes place outside the family. Making important decisions is the
result of a process, decision processes are actions that lead to actions. Generational changes consist
of a number of decisions and processes.
The final part of the theoretical framework is based on a model called the decision process model,
an old classic model that has been revised and updated in stages to be applied to generational changes
in this work. The five steps of the decision process are divided into Problem identification,
information search, evaluation of alternatives, implementation and outcome.
The LRF's youth report from 2023 states that in their study they were able to establish the difficulty
of being able to afford to buy out siblings and problems with raising sufficient capital to carry out a
deal. In Coopermans et al. (2021) scientific article, 155 people from 85 farms throughout Europe
participated. In their study, three main phases were identified during and 14 factors that affect a
generational change.
A total of six different farmers in central and southern Sweden were interviewed. The interviewees
were asked to estimate how long their generational change took, from the planning stage to the farm
being completely handed over. Most stated that it took between 1–5 years. When asked whether the
interviewees had experience or experienced that the generational change had stalled, the majority
answered no but at the same time pointed out that they had had good conditions, something that is
described as success factors. These are factors that probably contributed to the short time for
decision-making processes. The results of the study indicate that the obstacles that the interviewees
experienced consisted of both internal and external factors.
Abstract
In order to understand the generational change processes, there is a lot to understand and that
requires insights. There are many obstacles on the way before a generational change is complete. In
practice, it is the farmer's own responsibility to deal with the process and it is his or her responsibility
to seek information and ask for help. When the transfer approaches, it is of great importance that the
farmer has the ability to see the whole picture in order to enable a sustainable generational change.
Generational changes that do not go well or occur at the "right time" risk affecting our future food
supply.
The studies that have been in-depth on the subject of generational shifts and that have been compared
and applied in my study are the LRF's youth report from 2023, Coopermans, et al., (2021) and the
decision-making process model from 1968. What has been found in my study is that there have been
success factors that have contributed to the short time for decision-making processes. What has been
identified as success factors are 1. Good communication, 2. Good planning, and 3. Strategic
decisions.
One of the UN's sustainability goals, zero hunger, is about securing our food supply. The starting
point for when something is considered sustainable is when the three perspectives of economic,
environmental and social sustainability are met. Generational shifts that are made in time can
contribute to the UN's sustainability goals.
For a more reliable result, the study would have required more interviews than the six who
participated in my survey. The selection was limited due to the requirement that the farmer was
expected to be an active farmer, have completed the entire generational change process and that the
implementation had taken place relatively recently.
The conclusion is that the majority of those interviewed who have carried out their generational
shifts have not experienced any obstacles. Those who stated that the process has stalled on several
occasions are those who have had generational shifts that have taken between 8–15 years. Those
who have had a shorter decision-making process have been found to have had better conditions than
those with a long one. The obstacles that have been identified are, illness within the family, the lack
of a clear or purposeful successor, ambiguities as to which sibling will take over, tendencies to
postpone the generational shift on the part of the transferor, generational shifts that began far too
late to result in a shift in inheritance
Why are there fewer women than men running agricultural businesses? : what structural barriers are there?
I många enskilda
Only 24% of sole proprietorships in Swedish agriculture are owned by women, while the remaining
76% are owned by men. This raises questions about gender equality and the different conditions for
men and women to run agricultural businesses.
The purpose of this literature review is to examine the structures that influence women’s
entrepreneurship in agriculture. The study is based on previous research and statistics, with a focus
on structural and societal barriers.
The results show that norms, limited access to land, parental leave, lack of risk-taking, and the
absence of female role models are obstacles that make it difficult for women to run businesses.
The study highlights the need for a shift in society’s perception of entrepreneurship within the green
sector. It is often the man who is seen as the face of the business, as he is the one working visibly
and physically on the farm, while the woman tends to the children and home. In many sole
proprietorships, the business is run on the farm where the family lives, making it difficult to separate
work from leisure. This can result in women’s work on the farm being rendered invisible
