No short-term effects of riparian harvesting on aquatic macroinvertebrates : a case study from boreal headwaters in Northern Sweden
Riparian forests serve as critical buffers between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, particularly in boreal headwaters where biodiversity is sensitive to land-use disturbances such as forest harvesting. This study investigates the short-term impacts of different riparian buffer designs on the biodiversity and community composition of aquatic macroinvertebrates in seven headwater streams in northern Sweden. Using a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) approach, the study compared macroinvertebrate metrics before and after riparian forest harvesting across various treatment and reference sites. Key biodiversity indicators, including total abundance, species richness, and richness and abundance of sensitive EPT taxa (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera), were assessed alongside habitat variables such as buffer width, stream substrate composition, and stream size.
The results indicated no statistically significant short-term effects of riparian harvesting on macroinvertebrate community structure across the studied sites, suggesting that the riparian buffer practices – which were distinct in design, exceeding typical standards in terms of width, structural complexity, and were specifically tailored to the characteristics of each site – may be sufficient to maintain ecological integrity in the immediate aftermath of harvesting. Furthermore, buffer width did not significantly correlate with biodiversity metrics, whereas substrate composition, particularly the presence of bryophytes and coarse substrates, showed stronger correlations with macroinvertebrate diversity. Catchment area, as an indicator of stream size, had no significant correlation with biodiversity. These findings highlight the importance of local habitat features over buffer width alone and suggest that ecological responses to forest management may take longer to manifest. Long-term monitoring is recommended to capture delayed or cumulative effects
The price of agricultural machinery has increased in recent years while the number of newly registered tractors steadily declines. At the same time, the interest in purchasing used agricultural machinery has grown. There are several established companies who specialize in used machinery sales, with online auctions being among the most popular platforms. Purchasing machinery through online auctions without the opportunity for physical inspection, places high demands on the buyer´s ability to independently assess and evaluate the machinery in order to make well informed decisions. This study aims to explore farmers decision-making processes when purchasing used agricultural machinery via online auctions. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with two farmers who recently bought used machinery through online auctions. Solomon´s decision-making theory and Ajzen´s Theory of Planned Behavior were applied to analyze the empirical data. The findings show that the farmers acted based on clear needs, extensive knowledge and previous experience which contributed to a greater sense of confidence in their decisions. Although there was awareness of the risk, the perceived benefits of the purchase weighed more heavily. Social influence had minimal impact, as the decisions were primarily based on individual and rational considerations
A safe harbour from climate change? : exploring the potential of cold microrefugia in Swedish forests
Rising temperatures lead to species range shifts and thermophilisation of communities. Forests buffer temperatures and can provide relatively cool microclimates. These microclimates could act as refugia for cold adapted plant species facing the pressure of climate change. As forest microclimates are dependent on stand characteristics, forest management plays an important role in shaping them. This thesis explores the microrefugia potential on the forest ground in three Swedish regions and asks two main questions: First, where can relatively cold microclimates be found and what factors contribute to the difference in temperature? Second, where are cold communities located, and do they occur in cold microclimates? For analyses multiple linear regression models were used to explore microclimate temperature at 15 cm above ground and its drivers. The relationship between temperature and plant communities on the ground was investigated using correlation tests. Temperature and soil moisture data were obtained from microclimate loggers and plant occurrence from vegetation inventories. Additionally, predicted temperature maps were created based on open-source data on landscape features, microclimate temperature and linear models. Moreover, the microclimate models based on in-situ predictors and models with mapped predictors were compared. The relatively cold microclimates in the research areas were mainly driven by elevation, soil moisture and canopy openness. Cold plant communities were found in cold places, but there was no significant correlation with temperature along microclimate gradients within the individual regions. This could reflect limitations of the CTI (Community temperature index) as measurement for relative cold/warm adaptation of the ground plant communities. Future studies could focus on absence/presence of species close to the warm edge of their range, which may result in stronger correlations. Nevertheless, the study highlights that forest management can facilitate relatively cold places, which could be used for climate change adaption and mitigation strategies in boreal forests. Additionally, the results show that national scale data might be a helpful tool to incorporate microclimates in management and planning
Redesign of an urban public street : design proposal for Västra Mårtensgatan in Lund to a green street
This study explores how Västra Mårtensgatan, a pedestrian street in Lund, can be transformed from
a transitional link into a destination, thereby enhancing the attractiveness of the surrounding urban
cores. The analysis is based on two central theoretical models: the Model of Factors for an Attractive
City Center and the Place Diagram.
City centers play a crucial role in a city's functionality and appeal, particularly in urban
environments such as Lund. Research shows that a vibrant and attractive city center not only benefits
the local economy but also contributes to positive experiences and a stronger sense of identity among
residents. In recent years, the Municipality of Lund has implemented strategies to develop its city
centers into livelier and experience-rich destinations. However, there is a noticeable lack of holistic
integration between these urban cores, which risks fragmenting the overall urban experience. In this
context, the study focuses on Västra Mårtensgatan, which serves as a connecting route between city
centers Botulfsplatsen and Mårtenstorget. Despite plans to develop these centers into attractive
destinations, Västra Mårtensgatan remains a contrasting, function-oriented street that currently lacks
appeal.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential for transforming Västra Mårtensgatan
into an attractive destination from multiple perspectives, guided by the two key theoretical models.
The study maps the street’s current function in relation to the city’s structural context and analyses
its experiential qualities, such as the character of its public space and its role in social interaction.
By combining two methodological approaches, literature review and field study, a broader
understanding of Västra Mårtensgatan is achieved from the perspectives of the municipality, urban
planners, and users. Additional insights from municipal documents and visions provide context
regarding the overarching goals and guidelines that the street’s development should align with. The
integration of macro- and micro-level perspectives contributes to a more comprehensive analysis.
The field study was conducted to complement the theoretical framework with direct observations of
the site’s experiential qualities, including movement patterns, lighting conditions, wind exposure,
surface materials, and vegetation. These findings provided deeper insights into the physical and
atmospheric characteristics of the area and formed the basis for the proposed design intervention.
The results indicate that Västra Mårtensgatan, supported by theories of attractive urban centers
and the principles of the Place Diagram, holds significant potential to become both a strategic urban
connector and a destination on its own. The proposal suggests transforming the street from a
passageway into a vibrant destination through the introduction of seating areas, a small public
square, and improved connections to surrounding transport environments. The transformation aims
to create a safe, accessible, and socially sustainable public space that encourages longer stays and
spontaneous encounters. With the addition of public activities, increased greenery, and locally
anchored initiatives, the site’s identity and sense of place can be strengthened. The proposed
development, in collaboration with the municipality, local stakeholders, and property owners, is
expected to contribute not only to economic vitality but also to the promotion of cultural diversity
and residents’ sense of belonging and pride
Assessment of dogs’ expressions of stress and pain
Stress and pain are common conditions that greatly affect the well-being and welfare of dogs. The ability to identify signs of pain and stress is necessary for successful management, diagnosis and treatment of dogs. Dog owners and animal health professionals play an important role in this assessment. It can be challenging to detect stress and pain in dogs. An additional challenge is distinguishing between signs of pain and stress, both behaviorally and physiologically. It is com-mon to use behavioral observations and various stress and pain scales when assessing pain and stress in animals. Several objective physiological measurements have been used in previous studies to assess pain and stress, such as body temperature, heart rate, cortisol concentration and blood pressure. According to previous studies, combining behavioral observations with physio-logical measurements is the most reliable method to assess pain and stress.
The aim of this study was to investigate dog owners’ perceptions of stress and pain-related signs in their dogs and to investigate whether this was consistent with another observer’s assessments of the dogs’ stress and pain signs. The study also aimed to investigate how heart rate, blood pressure and pressure algometry values were affected by stress and pain and if there were similarities between how these changed and the dog owner’s subjective assessments of the dog’s stress and pain. A total of twelve healthy dogs and their owners were included. The dogs were of varying age, weight, sex and breeds. The study consisted of a survey part and an experimental part. The owners answered questions where they assessed the dogs’ stress and pain level during the visit, which then were compared to an observer’s assessment of the dogs’ stress and pain level, as well as changes in physiological parameters and pressure algometry values. Physiological measure-ments used in this study included heart rate and blood pressure. Pressure algometry was used as a semi-objective method to quantify the dog’s mechanical sensitivity threshold and was performed before and after pain provocation. Ischemic pain was induced with the tourniquet test. Paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and descriptive statistics were used as methods for statistical analysis.
No statistically significant changes were detected in physiological parameters or values obtained from pressure algometry because of stress and pain. No statistically significant differences were detected between the dog owners’ and the observer’s assessments of the dogs’ stress and pain. There were also no statistically significant differences between the respective dog owner’s predict-ted estimate before and assessment after the tests of the dog’s stress and pain or between the obser-ver’s assessments of the dog’s stress and pain before and after pain provocation. According to des-cripttive comparisons, differences in subjective assessments were demonstrated between observers (dog owners and an observer), but these differences were minimal. According to descriptive com-parisons, the dog owners generally assessed the dogs’ stress and pain signs in accordance with how physiological parameters and pressure algometry values changed due to pain and/or stress. A limiting factor was the number of participating dogs and dog owners. The results confirmed previous studies regarding the difficulty in distinguishing between signs of pain and stress. The results highlighted the variation between dogs and different observers’ assessments, confirming what has previously been described as the major challenge when assessing stress and pain in dogs. The study indicates that further studies on identifying stress and pain in dogs are important, with larger study populations and additional objective evaluation methods
Intercropping Legumes with Winter Oilseed Rape
Intercropping legumes with Winter Oilseed Rape (WOSR) presents a viable agro-ecological strategy to mitigate issues in monoculture systems, including insufficient weed control, overdependence on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, and diminished crop biodiversity. While intercropping with cereals and legumes is extensively documented for its agronomic and ecological advantages, such as enhanced resource use efficiency, soil health, and production, the intercropping of winter oilseed rape with legumes is still inadequately investigated. This study examines the impact of several WOSR-legume intercropping combinations on crop growth, productivity, nitrogen and chlorophyll content and also weed assessment. The experiment was performed at the Lönnstorp research station of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), with 24 intercropping treatments replicated across four plots utilizing a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Weed coverage percentages were determined for all 24 treatments while chlorophyll content was determined for 20 treatments. Furthermore, measurement of dry biomass weight and nitrogen content in WOSR, legumes, weeds were estimated in 13 treatments. The study revealed that intercropping WOSR with over-wintering peas under reduced N input, 50 cm wide row spacing between and 25% sowing density of winter peas planted six weeks after WOSR, had the highest leaf chlorophyll content and indicate less weed density. Moreover, the intercropping treatments improved nitrogen and chlorophyll content compared with sole crop winter oilseed rape (WOSR). Notably, WOSR intercropped with over-wintering faba bean using reduced N input with 50 cm wide row spacing and 50% faba bean sowing density sown 10 days after WOSR produced the highest legume biomass and nitrogen content. These results show that intercropping can reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers and herbicides, improve weed suppression, and maximize nitrogen use efficiency. It has the potential to fosters sustainable agriculture by enhancing the quality of the soil and avoiding negative impacts on the environment
Staggering disease is a neurologic disease in domestic cats, first described in Sweden in the 1970s.
Affected cats develop ataxia, paresis of the hind limbs, decreased ability to jump and behavioral
changes. Currently, there is no specific clinical diagnostic test to diagnose Staggering disease in
cats, but the veterinarian may suspect the condition based on the anamnesis and clinical presentation. To confirm the suspicion of Staggering disease, histology is required. Histologically, a nonsuppurative meningoencephalomyelitis is seen. Earlier studies indicate that borna virus is the etiological agent to Staggering disease, but since 2023 rustrela virus is discussed as an alternative
etiological agent.
In this study immunohistochemistry was performed to investigate the presence of rustrela virus
in paraffin-embedded tissue from the central nervous system of 50 cats necropsied at SLU between 2000 and 2020. Out of the 50 cats 24 had morphological findings typical for Staggering
disease and 26 cats had other types of inflammation in the central nervous system. Rustrela virus
was present in all 24 cats with morphological findings typical for Staggering disease, but not in
any of the other 26 cats. Statistically significant relationships were established between rustrela
virus infection and cats with access to the outdoors, lumbar pain, vocalization, slow walking and
an inability to withdraw the claws.
Overall, the results indicate that rustrela virus is the etiological agent for Staggering disease
and that cats with rustrela virus infection have higher odds of developing specific clinical signs, in
comparison to cats with other types of inflammation in the central nervous system. It was also
shown that outdoor cats have higher odds of getting Staggering disease. For some of the investigated parameters information was missing in several medical records, thus only a relatively small
number of cats was studied regarding those parameters. Therefore there is some uncertainty regarding the results relevance and external validity. Despite this the results have a clinical relevance,
which could be an aid för clinical veterinarians to gain suspicion of Staggering disease in an early
stage
Appraisal of agricultural climate change adaptation policies in Sudan
The economy of Sudan largely depends on agriculture. Most of the population lives in rural areas and relies on rain-fed agriculture for their livelihoods, which makes them especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Agriculture has encountered repeated crises due to climate change, compounded by extreme weather events that lead to issues such as flash floods, droughts, and unpredictable rainfall. Smallholder farmers, who are particularly reliant on rain-fed agriculture, have been significantly affected, especially by the negative consequences of recent flash floods on their farming operations.
Sudan has ratified international agreements concerning environmental governance, as a response Sudan presented the National Adaptation Plan (NAP). This thesis critically examines the existing policies aimed at enhancing the capacity of communities, particularly smallholder farmers, to adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
The research aims to identify gaps in policies that hinder effective implementation by analyzing proposed measures to address the impact of climate change on agriculture. Policy documents are evaluated alongside interviews with stakeholders in the agricultural sector, including experts and smallholder farmers. The interviews with smallholder farmers emphasize their perceptions of climate change and the challenges they encounter in farming. Bacchi's What is the problem represented to be (WPR ) theoretical framework is used to conceptualize the problem of climate change adaptation.
The findings of this thesis indicate that agricultural policy-making is significantly influenced by political decisions, which are shaped by the country's economic conditions. Climate change adaptation is not prioritized in these policies and is still not integrated into national strategic planning. A proposed solution is to build capacity by increasing agricultural production. Additionally, the perspectives of stakeholders, including smallholder farmers and experts from the agribusiness sector and educational institutions, are often overlooked in the policy-making process. Furthermore, current policies have not adequately addressed the implications of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its potential positive or negative impacts on climate change risks
Under gatuträdens kronor
Climate threats place high demands on urban development while making it more difficult to live in cities. Increased temperatures due to heat island effects are one of the most dangerous climate threats in urban environments. Climate adaptation can therefore be the key to creating resilient cities that can face challenges such as urban heat islands, air pollution and loss of greenery while improving living conditions. Along with the new EU Nature Restoration Regulation and regional action plans, climate adaptation together with tree cover and the urban ecosystem have received increasing attention. This work therefore presents the importance of climate adaptation in dense urban environments to mitigate the heat island effect and contribute to public health. Therefore, the research questions are answered:
● How can trees improve people's living conditions in cities and what should be considered to ensure that these expected ecosystem services are delivered?
● Based on a concrete site in Sweden, how can an inner city environment be climate adapted based on ecosystem services of trees to improve human living environments in cities?
Through literature review and site analyses, the importance of trees and vegetation to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve public health and strengthen the city's quality of life is emphasised. Vasastaden in Stockholm is used as an example to show how theoretical knowledge can be implemented through inspiration from global examples from Trieste and Paris, to enable a climate-adapted urban environment. Key strategies for climate adaptation include applying the 3-30-300 rule for greenery, strategic placement of trees and expansion of green infrastructure with the goal of providing climate-safe living environments for all. However, climate adaptation in dense inner city environments is complex both below and above ground, requiring interdisciplinary investigations and analyses. In addition, climate adaptation can take several different forms and focus on different aspects, which makes the area too broad for a thesis without strong delimitations. Despite strong limitations, it is concluded that structures in inner city environments should be questioned in order to meet the new climate goals, ensure the place of trees in the city and restore the urban ecosystem. The existing norms around the hard street environment may need to be replaced with soft green spaces and where the boundaries between street and park are blurred to ensure good living environments for all.
Botaniska trädgården i Uppsala
The core mission of the Botanical Garden in Uppsala has been centered around education and research, both historically and present. The use of the garden has changed throughout history and this can impact its cultural heritage. The aim of this study is to analyze the transformation of people’s use of the garden in order to identify how this has affected the garden’s cultural heritage. The study focuses on three categories of use: education and research, public access and events. The ICOMOS Florence charter of 1982 is used as a framework to assess how these changes have influenced the garden’s cultural heritage. The Florence charter defines historic gardens and provides guidelines on their management to ensure the preservation of their cultural and historical values. The study is conducted using a qualitative method , utilizing literature review and document studies as research tools.
The results of the study provide an understanding of the interaction between the garden’s use and its cultural heritage and it identifies which type of use has a positive or negative impact on the garden’s cultural heritage. The garden’s role in education and research has had a positive impact on the garden’s cultural heritage. By preserving plant collections and maintaining the garden’s role as a place of learning, the garden continues to uphold its original purpose and scientific legacy. The public access to the Botanical garden has increased over time which has had both positive and negative effects on its cultural heritage. Since the inauguration of the Botanical garden in Uppsala 1807 various types of events have taken place in the garden. Small-scale events, such as markets, sport activities and exhibitions, are not considered to cause abrasion in the garden and therefore they do not impact the garden’s cultural heritage. However, in recent years, large-scale events such as concerts have increased, and these are considered to have an increased risk to consider abrasion in the garden, which may negatively affect the garden’s cultural heritage
