The species P. contorta was introduced to Sweden for production purposes in forestry in 1920 and has been planted since 1970 within forestry because of its beneficial properties in terms of damage resistance and growth capacity. Introducing exotic species can however influence ecosystem features and other species, and forests based on exotic species are not always a preferred habitat by wildlife. Pine forest is an important habitat for moose (Alces alces) and especially during winter when moose's primary diet is pine. There is a lack of studies on habitat selection between these pine species, and this study was conducted to evaluate how moose respond to the P. contorta forest, and if the habitat use differs between seasons: the study was conducted on GPS data from 29 moose located in Västernorrland county in Sweden was performed using step selection function (SSF) and conditional logistic regression. The study showed that clearcut/ young forest was the most used habitat by moose during all seasons, especially during winter, probably due to forage availability, as moose during winter primarily feed on pine. My result showed that moose during winter avoided the habitat clearcut/young forest with a higher proportion of p contorta, which could be a result of foraging preferences. During summer and autumn, moose habitat selection varied more. Previous studies have shown that this behavior is probably an effect of thermoregulation and their forage choice. During summer and autumn, my results showed that moose selected mature Pinus contorta forest compared to mature Pinus sylvestris, which could be due to the characteristic denser canopy of Pinus contorta resulting in lower temperatures in this forest.I Sverige introducerades tallarten Pinus contorta från Nordamerika under 1920 talet på grund av en oro för en framtida virkesbrist i Sverige.
How pharmaceutical pollution affects social behavior in a cichlid fish : influence of diazepam on social attraction and group spacing in Neolamprologus multifasciatus
Pharmaceutical pollution is an emerging threat to aquatic ecosystems, yet its impact on complex social behaviours in fish remains underexplored. This thesis investigates how diazepam, a commonly detected Anxiolytic drug affects group spacing and social attraction in the shell-dwelling cichlid Neolamprologus multifasciatus. In a controlled laboratory setting, fish were exposed to three treatment levels of diazepam, control (0 μg/L), low (2 μg/L), and high (50 μg/L). Group spacing was assessed by analysing the spatial clustering of shell shelters used by the fish, while social attraction was evaluated through a two-choice behavioural task in a separate testing aquarium. Results showed that fish exposed to high doses of diazepam formed less clustered territories, indicating reduced group cohesion. In the two-choice sociality trials, high dose fish emerged more quickly from their shell shelters, spent more time near conspecifics, and exhibited increased exploratory behaviour. These changes suggest enhanced social attraction and boldness, consistent with diazepam’s known anxiolytic effects. The observed effects were dose-dependent, with stronger behavioural changes at higher concentrations. The effect on social attraction were stronger in females, who showed stronger behavioural changes than males. These findings demonstrate that diazepam can alter both spatial and social behavioral aspects of a group living social fish species. Such behavioural disruptions show the need to consider complex social behaviours when evaluating the environmental impact of pharmaceutical contaminants
Vegetationsökologische Kartierung zur Bewertung des Auenwaldes und historische Analyse der Waldentwicklungen im Naturschutzgebiet “Stockerauer Au” in Niederösterreich
Since the 19th century, the floodplain habitats along the Austrian Danube have been heavily altered by river regulation, hydropower constructions, forestry as well as land use changes. In the absence of the hydrological dynamics - essential for natural floodplain ecosystems - progressive drying and subsequent vegetation succession continue unabated. Additional stressors such as ash and elm dieback, the spread of invasive neophytes, climate change and global species loss are causing significant changes in forest communities within a short period. Nature reserves aim to preserve these valuable habitats in good condition or restore them to such a state which constitutes a considerable challenge given the numerous stress factors. Regular monitoring is necessary and in scientific interest regarding possible future developments.
The aim of this study is to document the conservation grade as well as the state of several ecological factors from a nature conservation perspective and to evaluate the changes within vegetation types since 1990. After comparing the results, this study aims to derive possible potentials and limits regarding future developments, as well as management practices concerning the site.
Within the vegetation mapping in the Stockerauer Au 30, biotope types were identified, with oak-elm-ash forest comprising about 50% and ash-poplar forest 21% of the total protection area. About 62% of the study site was covered by a Natura 2000 forest habitat type (91E0 or 91F0), however the forest was assessed as ecologically degraded (state C). Reasons for the degradation are found in the loss of hydrodynamics, in herbivory, ash and elm dieback, as well as increasing occurrence of invasive species. Native regeneration is limited, while invasive trees such as Juglans nigra and Robinia pseudoacacia proliferate. Comparison with 1990 mapping data suggests that half of the ash-poplar forest in 1990 transitioned into the next succession stage: oak-elm-ash forest.
The study concludes that there needs to be a major change in the hydrological dynamics to fulfill the objectives of the nature protection site. Austria is obligated by law to restore and preserve these floodplain habitats and without recurring primary successions, the forest will steadily develop towards a non-alluvial climax stage (Hornbeam dominated forest), comprising the loss of endangered species and habitats. The actual reforestations in form of clearcuttings show a severe disruption of natural processes and are not conducive to achieving long-term environmental sustainability.
These and other described management practices will determine the prospective ecological functions of the site (eg. as drinking water reserve). Especially regarding climate change and biodiversity loss these decisions will have great effect on future generations.
From membership to harvest : a case study of European Union's effect on Swedish grain output
Sweden joined the European Union as a member in 1995 resulting in adapting the EUs Common Agricultural Policy and accessing the European common market removing trade barriers for agricultural goods among others. To understand whether an EU membership has had an effect on Swedish production of cereals, specifically wheat and oats, this research applies a Causal-ARIMA model. The model’s dependent variable is Production in tonnes and the control variables utilized are Producer Price Index, Temperature, and Precipitation. This results in two models, one for each grain. This is then put in to the context of the Ricardian theory of comparative advantage. Previous studies which have examined the impact of the EU on Sweden have had different focuses: self-sufficiency ratio, productivity, and net benefits. None of these studies have examined production, which is the primary focus of this paper.
The results show that wheat has been positively affected by the membership while production of oats has decreased due to it. According to the Ricardian theory resources will be reallocated from less competitive crops towards more competitive crops. Swedish wheat production can therefore be seen as having a comparative advantage in relation to Swedish oats production
Development of a novel LAMP assay for early detection of two-line chestnut borer (Agrilus bilineatus)
The two-line chestnut borer (Agrilus bilineatus) poses a major threat to oak populations in Europe. It is a close relative to the invasive emerald ash borer
(Agrilus planipennis), known for its catastrophic impact on ash (Fraxinus spp.) forest. With increase in global trade, the threat of A.bilineatus spreading further into
Europe is a serious concern for forest health and biosecurity. Quick and reliable molecular detection methods hence are needed to identify these pests before they
get established. In this study, I aim to create a loop isothermal amplification assay
for the early detection of TLCB. I have tested the assay against 24 non-target
species, comprising of 16 Agrilus species (Buperstidae), three non-Agrilus
buprestids, four Cerambycids, and two Curculionids. The assay was specific to the
target species showing clear amplification and no amplification for all non-target
species. The assay was also tested for sensitivity, and it successfully amplified DNA
as low as to 0.064 pg/μL. The result demonstrates high specificity and sensitivity
of the assay providing a reliable tool for early detection and can be used on-site to
monitor the presence of forest pests enabling proactive management of forest pest
invasions
Care Program for the Park and Gardens at Dybäck Castle
This work is based on a literature study and cultural-historical investigation of the park and gardens at Dybäck’s Castle, where biological, intangible and cultural values have been identiĕed.
The values have been interpreted based on The Burra Charter, the Florence Declaration and other documentation on management of historic gardens. Furthermore, these are compiled in an action plan where future goals for the manor's green areas are articulated. This also provides
suggested measures that can increase the importance of the site and make its existing cultural-historical values more visible and inherent.
The site has been investigated from a holistic perspective but also by dividing the site into smaller sub-areas, where individual structures have been studied in more detail. The traces that are particularly valuable and indicate cultural-historical development are those that have survived
in the park and gardens since the late 19th century and early 20th century. Older vegetation, water elements and functional as well as aesthetic garden structures are especially noteworthy.
These structures reĘect older traditions, previous garden ideals and the personal values placed in the vegetation, and the other elements of the site, making them part of our living cultural heritage.
The estate of Dybäck’s Castle differs from similar castles and manors in Skåne already listed buildings, although they also have much in common. Therefore, the park and gardens are considered worthy of preservation, either through legal protection or continued responsible management by the current owners. Preservation of complete environments is often preferred, but particularly valuable structures or parts of the site can also be preserved individually
The effect of training level and type of dog sport on dog behaviour
Exercise, both physical and mental is probably linked to the development of behaviour problems in dogs. A few correlations have been found between level of exercise and the occurrence of specific behaviour problems though this is not broadly studied. The effect of participation in different dog sports has not been studied to a large extent and therefore the purpose of this study was to evaluate if there were any connections between the everyday behaviour of the dog and the amount of training dogs received and/or type of activity. Owners of dogs that practiced agility, obedience or working dog trials were included in the study aswell as dogs primarily kept for companionship. Another goal was to investigate how and if the performance and everyday behaviour of dogs had changed during the last 10 to 20 years, according to dog owners who had long experience of specific types of dogs. For this study a questionnaire was created. The results did not show any correlations between the amount of training dogs receive every week and the everyday behaviour nor any clear links between type of dog sport and behaviour. Results showed that agility dogs (T=-2,75, P=0,03; N=59) and dogs that were mainly kept as companions (T=2,69, P=0,04; N=64) were more fearful than dogs participating in working dog trials according to owner reports. Moreover, dogs kept as companions were less excited and agitated than dogs in working dog trials (T=-2,70, P=0,04; N=70). Most dog owners did not experience behavioural changes in training over the last 10-20 years, and they believed that the breeding strategies today were successful as it resulted in dogs that performed well in training and were functional in everyday life. According to dog owners in all dog sport groups dogs were perceived to be more willing to train with dog owners today, were more explosive and stressed according to agility participants, had better focus according to obedience participants and better at switching between work and rest according to working dog trials participants. In everyday life most believed that no change have occurred.27
6. Slutsats
indikation hos hundarna i gruppen agility.
fungerar i vardagen.
Design ideas for the outdoor environment of Malmö Centralstation : inviting landscape for people to meet in flourishing pocket parks, squares & quay promenades instead of car prioritized streets
This thesis provides landscape design ideas for the area surrounding Malmö
Centralstation to become an inviting outdoor meeting space for people.
The design ideas responds to wishes about making the area surrounding
Malmö Centralstation function as an flourishing, inviting, safe and easy to
navigate meeting space with greenery where its visitors are invited to spend
time. Landscape design ideas in the thesis also aim to fulfill global goals
with a focus on increasing accessibility of green and public spaces as well as
biodiversity.
The method followed an iterative design process that included site visits
and sketching. The site visits were the basis of a site analysis which pointed
out that the area surrounding Malmö Centralstation is dominated by car
traffic and thus the area is noise polluted. The site analysis indicates need for
transformation of the area to become an inviting meeting space.
Sketches portray various ways of how the outdoor environment of Malmö
centralstation can be designed if car traffic was less dominant. This is visualized
through illustrations of the study area where car dominated surfaces and
impermeable asphalt are decreased to fit flourishing and inviting outdoor
meeting spaces that contribute to biodiversity and healthy tree canopy
cover, amongst other benefits. Design ideas such as flourishing pocket parks,
squares and quay promenades with public transportation links are explored
through sketches and illustrations. The design ideas can hopefully contribute
to engage your mind with questions and discussion about how the study
area can be designed
A well-preserved and living coast : strategies against coastal erosion based on ecology and recreation in Örnahusen
Coastal erosion is fundamentally a natural process where material along the coast is transported back and forth mainly by the sea’s waves and currents. But coastal erosion is not solely a natural process. It is accelerated and increased by climate change, which contributes to a rising sea level and more frequent extreme weather, among other things. This shows that global changes in the climate also affect conditions at on a local level.
The old fishing village of Örnahusen is a small coastal community between Simrishamn and Ystad in southeastern Skåne. The village has long had a relationship with the sea and the coast, both through its livelihood and due to the village’s proximity to the coastline.
Today, Örnahusen and its coast are threatened by coastal erosion, but the phenomenon does not only affect people and the village’s buildings; it also poses a risk to the area’s flora and fauna, including several red-listed and threatened species whose habitats are at risk. Previously implemented hard structures and solutions contribute to increased coastal erosion, and something must be done, and soon.
The proposed solution presented in this paper envisions a new strategy for Örnahusen’s coast. Hard structures along the coastline are removed or adapted, and a soft, organic, and multifunctional solution in the form of beach nourishment, dune formation, and vegetation planting is developed. The village’s coastline will now be protected while ecology and recreation are taken care of and strengthened
Collaborative design : a method for planning and development of community-led housing
Community-led housing (specifically referring to the “Baugemeinschaft/ Baugruppen”-methodology) denotes housing development in which residents often take an active role in planning and design. The model is increasingly presented as a complement to conventional production, as it tends to deliver more economically, socially, and ecologically sustainable outcomes. However, the process also poses complex challenges for both residents and participating architects. This thesis examines how a pattern language can be used as a method to support collaborative planning and design in community-led housing.
The aim is to formulate a methodology that identifies recurring problems in collective building processes, thereby strengthening co-creation between architects and residents. The study draws on a literature review and three case studies: Ze05 in Berlin, Alte Weberei Carré in Tübingen, and WagnisART in Munich. Through analysis of these projects, challenges related to design processes, organisation, and the architect’s role are identified and synthesised.
The findings show that a pattern language can clarify communication around complex issues and provide groups with varied levels of expertise a shared structure to shape and steer their conversations. Among the resulting patterns, “The Architect’s Balancing Act” exemplifies the need to reconcile group visions with technical and economic constraints. The method also enables cross-project comparison and the articulation of principles that can be transferred to new contexts.
Overall, the work argues that a pattern language can function as both a practical and reflective tool for architects and resident groups undertaking community-led housing. The thesis contributes an initial framework that translates architectural knowledge into accessible patterns and a syntactic structure for shared decision-making, while noting limitations regarding generalisability and the need for further testing in additional contexts
