Green presence in an ever-changing space : a temporary design proposal for Vaksala Square
Temporary urbanism has become an increasingly common tool for enhancing the quality of urban public spaces. Through temporary place activation, new uses such as seating and greenery can be implemented quickly, which benefits social interaction as well as physical and mental well-being amongst citizens.
This project explores how the qualities of Vaksala torg in Uppsala can be strengthened through temporary place activation, especially with the help of greenery. The square, which today is used primarily for markets and events, lacks green elements and qualities that encourage people to linger. At the same time, the large open area and the central location present strong potential for temporary interventions that can activate the space and contribute to a more attractive urban environment.
The project has a five-year time frame and aims to create a temporary design proposal that introduces greenery and new spatial functions without compromising the square’s ability to accommodate large events. The method is based on an explorative design process that has included literature reviews, mapping and site analyses, studies of reference projects, and conversations with teachers and professionals in the field. This knowledge forms the basis for a sketch and design phase in which various temporary, vegetation-focused solutions are tested.
The result is a design proposal consisting of modular elements that can be easily moved with a forklift and combined in different ways to form green spatial environments. The modular system allows for a high degree of flexibility, making it possible to combine new qualities for the square with its continued activity. A central part of the work has been exploring the possibilities and limitations of temporary place activation and adaptable design solutions. The hope is that the proposal can inspire further development of green, temporary solutions in urban environments
This bachelor’s thesis studies how well school meals in elementary school meet students' energy and nutritional needs during a school day. This is in relation to the Swedish Food Agency national guidelines that considers that school meals should cover at least 30% of the daily requirement. The work is based on the question: How do the guidelines for school meals align with students´ energy and nutritional needs during the school day? This is with a focus on further investigation into the significance of the meal drink in this context, with focus on the difference in the total nutritional content of the meal with or without milk. A nutritional calculation of two weeks' menu from a selected municipality has been done, containing detailed ingredient lists that analyzed the composition of the school lunches using the software Dietist Net.
Two scenarios have been compared with each other, one where the meal included a glass of milk and one where the meal included a glass of water. The results showed that only girls who drank milk in connection to their meal reached the guidelines' goal of covering 30% of the daily energy requirement. The energy intake was lower for girls drinking milk and boys drinking milk and especially for boys dranking water.
The analysis indicated that milk has an positive impact on the intake of several nutrients, protein, calcium, riboflavin and vitamin D. Fiber intake was estimate as sufficient in all groups, thanks to the contribution from the salad bar and crispbread. At the same time, it also emerged that certain micronutrients as iron, iodine, zinc and selenium, did not reach the recommendations regardless of the drink.
The conclusion is that the school meals to some extent meet nutritional requirements, but that there are clear failures that primarily affect boys and children who choose not to drink milk as a meal drink. The study underlines the importance of school meals being continuously evaluated and adapted to the needs of students considering the new guidelines that are planned to be introduced in 2025
On the communication climate for communicating the climate : challenges, possibilities and successes for public environmental communication in uncertain times
Environmental science concerns and confidence display an inverse correlation to societal progress on mitigating climate change and its effects: we know so much yet do so little. This gap can be correlated to opposing political interests and competing interests in the public as well as private domain. Despite or even especially because of this, environmental communication practitioners may hold an important role in linking research to policymakers and actors in political and general society. In this study, the findings of environmental research are complemented with observations of public environmental communication practitioners in Sweden, on what the communication climate looks like in adverse political and social climates. Using the analytical lens of social representations theory, the study found three major themes (audiences and actors; challenges and change; possibilities and successes) that are explored in their normative, cognitive, and affective dimensions. Disconnects between respondents' aims and results are discussed, as differences between normative and cognitive dimensions are discovered, and experienced successes are discussed alongside possibilities for environmental communication for positive climate change
Minskat tallrikssvinn i skolor : intressenters synpunkter, elevbeteende och framtida åtgärder i Uppsala
Food waste has significant implications for the planet, contributing to climate change and biodiversity loss. In 2022, an estimated 1,052 million tonnes of food waste were generated globally. In Sweden, around 1.42 million tonnes were wasted the same year, with approximately 3,500 tonnes generated in upper secondary schools. Plate waste, the fraction of food left on consumers' plates, impacts not only the environment but also nutrition. Previous research has shown that plate waste increases with student age and that a minority of students often generate a majority of the waste. Therefore, this study investigates plate waste in two upper secondary schools in Uppsala municipality, Sweden, with the aim of exploring how to reduce it.
A mixed-methods approach was used to examine what measures the schools have taken, what causes relevant stakeholders perceive behind plate waste, what challenges and opportunities exist for reducing it, and whether high-waste students can be identified. Stakeholders included kitchen personnel, school staff, and students. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather information on interventions and to identify challenges and opportunities for plate waste reduction. Thematic analysis was applied to interview data, resulting in five identified themes. A student survey looked into student perspectives on reasons for food waste and potential school-level improvements. Lunchroom observations were used to investigate whether male students waste more than female students, and whether larger student groups contribute to increased waste.
Findings showed a variety of interventions implemented by the schools, many which align with previous research, such as educational campaigns and reduced plate size. The schools were observed to have lower plate waste than the national average during the study period. A key challenge was capturing students’ attention and achieving long lasting behavioural change. Interviews revealed routines for approaching high-wasting students and efforts to educate them, however the effects from such efforts have not been evaluated. It was also revealed that peer pressure and trends in society might have a substantial impact on plate waste behaviour. Other key findings were that plate waste increases at the start of the school year, indicating a window for when to concentrate efforts. Survey and interview data had contradictory results as to why students waste food, highlighting the limitations of self-reported data. Observations showed no significant gender difference in waste levels but did indicate that plate waste may increase with group size. The study concludes that further research is needed to study effects and implications of targeting high-waste students and for developing interventions with long-term impact in school settings
Restorative forest environments : which natural forest elements contribute to restoration?
We can cope with prolonged periods of stress if we are given the opportunity to recover. Research has shown that spending time and engaging in recreational activities in natural environments are particularly restorative. This theses’ aim is therfore to investigate the restorative environmental qualities of a Swedish forest based on what forest bathing guides consider to be most restorative in a forest environment. The question in this matter to be answered was: What do Swedish forest bathing guides experience as restorative in a Swedish forest environment?
The study was conducted with qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven Swedish forest bath guides operating in different parts all over Sweden. The interviews showed that there may be several different environmental components that can contribute to a restorative forest experience. According to the forest bath guides, a restorative forest environment should therefore comprise a varied natural environment rich in species with a tree population that is several hundred years old, water elements such as streams or lakes and heights from which a landscape can be viewed upon. Furthermore, the smells and sounds cape in a forest environment should be natural and social silence should be applied during the stay in the forest. Any kind of human impact that can be perceived as demanding should be avoided.
The Conclusions from this study indicate that a forest environment can be experienced as restorative. However, more in-depth studies with different focus objects and methods are needed to have the ability to draw evidence-based conclusions
Stormwater management at the cemetery Norra Kyrkogården : a design proposal for delay and storage of stormwater
I urbanaoch
According to SMHI (2025), climate change leads to an increased risk of torrential
rain. In urban and paved environments, the natural infiltration of water is prevented
and the water is instead directed to the water supply pipes underground. In the
event of torrential rain and large amounts of rain, the water supply system does
not have time to handle all the water, which can lead to flooding and polluted water
being discharged into waterways and the sea.
This also applies to the municipality of Lund, where water supply pipes in large
parts of the city are not designed for large flows such as during a torrential rain.
VASYD and the municipality of Lund have developed a stormwater and flood plan
to be able to locate and address risk and flood areas within public land.
Neighborhood land is owned by private or public property owners and the
municipality can only encourage property owners to take responsibility for their
own stormwater. Norra Kyrkogården has taken this encouragement and wants to
investigate the possibility of managing stormwater within the property, to reduce
the load on the water supply lines and to use the water for irrigation within the
cemetery. The report will develop a design proposal for sustainable stormwater
management, based on literature studies, analyses and the design process by

Need-driven management of wood purchase from private forest owners : a study of planning processes, information needs and applied data sources
In Sweden, there are approximately 300 000 non-industrial private forest owners, with around 60 percent of the timber volume owned by private forest owners. Because such a large share of the timber volume is privately owned, private forest owners play a crucial role in wood supply of the forest industry. Forestry companies build their wood supply chains from various sources, such as timber purchasing with private forest owners. The goal of this study was to map planning processes, information needs, and applied data sources used in the planning of wood purchasing with private forest owners in Sweden. A secondary objective was to identify differences in planning processes between forestry companies with and without their own forest holdings, and between those operating mainly in northern versus southern Sweden.
To fulfill the study’s purpose, seven qualitative interviews were conducted with professionals at four forestry companies in Sweden. The interviews were recorded and transcribed for further analysis, using thematic analysis. The results from the thematic analysis then formed the basis for the development of the process maps.
The results showed that the planning process could be divided into two subprocesses: the first focusing on planning and forecasting, and the second on follow-up and control. Wood purchases with private forest owners are considered a slow timber source, requiring at least three months of lead time to coordinate procurement. The results also showed that forestry companies used price premiums to secure stands with high bearing capacity and thus influence wood purchasing with private forest owners.
No differences in the planning process could be identified between northern and southern Sweden. However, a longer lead time was required in the north due to more limited opportunities for field planning compared to southern Sweden. Forestry companies with their own forest holdings had to consider their internal harvesting plans when planning timber transactions with private forest owners
The political ecology of German wolf management : narrowing ideological divides through ex ante incentives
Conflicts over wolf management in Germany and the species itself have become increasingly politicized, raising the question of whether wildlife management can influence voting behaviour. This thesis explores whether an alternative wolf management scheme based on ex-ante incentives could affect the voting preferences of German pastoral livestock owners. The study focuses on developing a suitable methodology to answer the research question and creating an adapted ex-ante incentive scheme inspired by Swedish carnivore management. A questionnaire was designed to collect data on demographics, wolf perceptions, and political affiliations. This was combined with a Vignette Design-Discrete Choice Experiment (VDCE), which framed the management proposals in radical-right, centre-right, and centre-left political styles while assessing preferences for specific management features. A pilot study tested the methodology, yielding 11 usable datasets. The study provided valuable insights into the practical challenges of reaching livestock owners and collecting sufficient responses. Though the dataset is limited, the findings suggest that ex-ante incentives could appeal to German livestock owners. However, significant refinement of the program design is necessary to address the remaining uncertainties. While this thesis demonstrates the complexity of linking wildlife management with political voting behaviour, it also highlights the potential of ex-ante incentives as a management tool. It underscores the importance of further research in this field
Aquatic invertebrates and wastewater effluents: behavioral responses and ecological implications : examining habitat preferences in aquatic invertebrates in northern Sweden
This study investigated the influence of wastewater discharges on the behavior and habitat choices of aquatic invertebrates in northern Sweden, including dragonfly larvae (Odonata), caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera), and crayfish (Decapoda). Furthermore, the potential role of ecological traps, where organisms may preferentially inhabit polluted habitats, potentially compromising their survival was explored. Four hypotheses were evaluated to assess whether and how these species react to wastewater effluent cues. For this, behavioral choice trials were conducted, where the tested animal could freely move between two water zones, a zone with clean tap water and a wastewater effluent zone. The analysis focusing on habitat preferences showed diverse preferences among the tested species. While caddisfly larvae and dragonfly larvae displayed fluctuating preferences across trials, crayfish did not exhibit distinct preferences across trials. However, not all behavioral analyses produced significant results. Exploration behaviors, measured by zone transitions, highlighted significant differences among species. The invertebrates’ lack of a clear preference in this study is concerning. It implies that they might not be able to identify some hazards in their environment, leading them to persist in polluted waters for feeding and reproduction. This research enhances the understanding of how aquatic ecosystems function amid emerging pollutants
Processing time and Animal Welfare in non-urgent seizures under chapter 9, section 5 of the Swedish Animal Welfare Act
Animal protection and animal welfare are two topics that occupy a larger space in today's society than before. Increased knowledge and interest in these areas are making society more aware of these issues. The County Administrative Board (CAB) is the competent authority responsible for ensuring that the animal welfare legislation in Sweden is followed by animal owners. This study
examines how animal welfare can be affected by the time it takes to seize animals in non-urgent cases. The purpose of this work was to investigate how seizures under Chapter 9, Section 5 of the Animal Welfare Act (DL) are carried out and what affects the processing time. The hypothesis was that animal welfare is negatively affected by the time it takes from when the CAB starts a case until the animals are seized.
This work examines the CAB's handling of animal seizures under Chapter 9, Section 5 DL by collecting documents and conducting interviews. During the study, seizure decisions under Chapter 9, Section 5 DL made during 2023 were requested from all CAB’s. This quantitative data was compiled in Microsoft Excel, and graphs were created to help interpret the results. Qualitative data was also collected through interviews with animal welfare officers. The interviews were semi-structured, meaning follow-up questions could be used to gain more valuable information for the study. Responses were recorded in a Google Drive document. The interview results were summarized, and the most important and interesting information for the study was presented.
The results indicate that extended delays in the process of seizing animals under Chapter 9, Section 5 of the Animal Welfare Act may have a detrimental impact on animal welfare. There is always an option to seize animals under Chapter 9, Section 6 DL if the animals are deemed to be in immediate suffering. Seizures under Chapter 9, Section 5 DL are considered a last resort, where the animal owner has been given several opportunities to correct deficiencies in their animal care.
The results show that the median time to seize animals under this section is eleven months from when a case is first initiated. Several respondents indicated that there is a lack of resources in the animal units of the CAB, which may affect the handling time of cases
