What’s a trail in the forest? : improved decision support for forest planning
The forest, which covers 69% of Sweden’s land area, is an important resource for humans. The forest provides both forest raw materials and social values for recreation. One of the most common leisure activities for Swedes is to spend time outside in the forest. Recreation in woodland reduces stress and promotes mental health. The industrial usage of forest for production of forest material and products has an annual turnover of more than 161 billion SEK. But the industrial usage of forest often affects the experienced value of recreation in woodland in a negative way. Hence, trade-offs are needed between economic and social values within the forestry. Forest decision support systems (DSS) contains functions that can calculate an estimated recreational value of a forest. The calculation is done with use of forest variables, but research has proven that there are a lot of other parameters that can affect the experienced recreational values. One of the parameters that has shown such effect is the presence of paths and trails and the availability to use them for recreation in an area. By adding a variable for the presence of paths and trails to the forest DSS, the decision support that has been made could lead to more information about the recreational value.
With both a geographic information system (GIS) and the forest DSS, a consideration towards location of paths and trails is added, when optimising management over a forest estate in the south of Sweden. The result of this optimization shows that forest closer to paths and trails is being treated to preserve or strengthen the recreational values. The forest that is not located near a path or trail is prioritised for production and therefore the net present value is much higher.
The act of taking path and trails presence in consideration when planning a forest estate to preserve or strengthen the recreation value can be an alternative for general consideration towards recreation
Overcoming social barriers to urban green adaptation : a social representations approach to local environmental governance
In May 2020, the Stockholm City Council adopted a new environmental program for the period 2020–2023. The sustainability goals within Agenda 2030 have been a guide for the environmental program, and the purpose of the program is to manage and coordinate the city's operations to achieve the vision of a climate-smart and ecologically sustainable Stockholm.
With the environmental program, the city intends to advance its positions regarding climate work, urging city officials to take the lead paving the way in the strive for a more resilient city. In order to succeed with the implementation of the environmental program, it will be necessary for actors within all affected units to comply with these policies and to build consensus and synergy driving the environmental work forward. However, assuming that people will atomically adhere to and change their behavior according to a written policy or documentation, is a simplified version of the communication reality. A broader and more profound view of communication, is to understand communication as multilateral, encompassing all kinds of interactions, verbal and non-verbal. This approach takes into account receptive and non-formal communication, such as norms and practices and reflect on how we as individuals interpret, make sense of and thereby engage in environmental issues.
This study starts from this profound view of communication, paying special attention to the social factors influencing people’s behavior. The study aims to better understand how social representations affect city officials' responses and compliance with the city of Stockholm’s environmental policies, by investigating how these actors are understanding and coping with these policies. As green urban infrastructure and climate adaptation are important parameters to the development of more resilient cities, these two concepts form the focus of this study. Social representations theory (SRT) is used as the main conceptual framework, as it explores group-level common-sense understandings and has proven to be useful in analyzing social processes of climate change. A qualitative case study of city officials at three different units within the city was done to find out how these actors relate to the city’s environmental policies, as well as their motivation, way of thinking and attitudes towards the concepts of green infrastructure and climate adaptation. Empirical data was gathered through participant observations, a qualitative survey and open-ended interviews, exploring the dynamics of the representations and the negotiation going on both on an individual level and on group levels. Three main social representations dimensions were identified relating to the concepts; the anthropocentric, the ecocentric and the technocentric dimension. Using these three dimensions, the implications of social values for green urban adaptation were explored.
The results of this study underline the need for further research on how social factors affects environmental change. By studying individuals 'and groups' interpretations, perceptions, and values of environmental policies, governments can bring more clarity to the complex social processes that form the basis for our decisions
Advantages and disadvantages of vegan dog foods : does it meet the dog´s needs?
Companion animals, and in particular dogs, is increasingly considered as a
member of the human family. Pet owners apply their value ground to their dogs,
which can be of ethical, religious, environmental and health nature. This can affect
the pet owner's choice of diet for their dogs. This drives research and feed
companies to develop diets that meet the animal owner's demand and minimise the
environmental impact, but that also meet the dog's nutritional needs. As
vegan/vegetarian diets has become increasingly popular in humans, it has also been
a topic for discussion as food to dogs as well. The purpose of this study was to
review the research literature regarding alternative vegan protein sources that can
replace the animal ones and how established dog-foods companies in Sweden view
vegan protein sources in dog food.
This was done via a review of the existing literature that is available through
different databases and with a survey that was sent out to 17 established food
companies on the Swedish market. In the survey, 3 out of 17 companies chose to
participate in the study. The literature focused on to retrieve information regarding
the nutritional content of vegan feed, protein sources, the dog's nutritional needs,
possible problems, animal owners' demand and environmental aspects.
Based on the literature and the survey, it is not entirely clear whether it is
possible to produce a completely vegan dog food in Sweden which fully cover the
dogs nutrient requirement. The studies that form the basis of this work, there are
different opinions about whether a vegan dog food is feasible, some claim that it is
possible if you remove the obstacles that exist today and others believe that it does
not work given that the dog is a facultative carnivore. Even among the food
companies that participated in the study, there were mixed opinions about whether
there is a market and whether it is possible to produce a complete vegan dog food
to be launched on the Swedish market. Both the food companies and the literature
address the aspects that are difficult to achieve with a vegan feed, including taurine
uptake and the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The study showed
that more studies are needed with larger study populations and that investigate
composition and how the content affects the digestibility and uptake of the diets
Bats as indicators of habitat connectivity in urban environments
Human disturbances to natural environments have been an increasing issue since the industrial revolution when the human population started to grow faster than ever before. Habitats have been extensively lost, followed by severe consequences on biodiversity. Bats are one order that has suffered from population declines caused by habitat loss - either from complete loss, or lost accessibility caused by fragmentation. The forest living bat species are particularly affected by forest fragmentation because they avoid crossing open ground. This may be because of predator avoidance, which also seems to be the reason they avoid light. This study examines whether connectivity facilitates movement between habitats in the landscape for the forest dwelling Myotis species. Bat activity was recorded with automatic ultrasound detectors in habitat elements with different levels of isolation (isolated islands, connected islands, corridors and continuous forest as controls) in Tierp, Sweden, during the month of July 2021. In general, the occurrence of Myotis on islands was not different from mainland, and there was no correlation between occurrence on isolated islands and size, distance to mainland, or distance to nearest habitat. However, the occurrence on isolated islands was related to the date of observation. This could be explained by the light summer nights of northern Europe in June and beginning of July. When observations later in July were excluded, occurrence on isolated islands was related to island size, thus when nights became darker bats dispersed to more isolated habitats. Light seems to enhance the isolation effect and be a bigger impediment for habitat use than fragmentation alone
Wheat is the main food source in the world. A secured production has however been threatened by environmental changes in combination with the need of producing more food for a growing population. As a result, there has been an increasing interest in finding new crop varieties susceptible to abiotic stress. A growing concern has also been seen among consumers regarding sustainability, local markets and health which has led to an increased interest in heritage cereals due to their claimed health benefits, nutritiousness and better resistance against abiotic stress. Though, these claims lack a proper foundation and more research is needed before any statements can be claimed. The present study aimed to analyze the dietary fiber content and composition of heritage wheat and investigate if potentially differences may be a result of wheat population (genetic background), cultivation location or treatment. Three heritage wheat populations (Dala Lantvete, Ölandsvete and Källunda) and one modern variety (Dacke) were cultivated at two locations in Sweden, within two blocks and with two treatments (with or without fertilizer) in each block. The samples were evaluated regarding dietary fiber content and composition, including arabinoxylan and fructan, which are the two most abundant dietary fibers in wheat. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used for multivariate analysis of the data set, followed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to find possible differences between samples.
In the PCA the wheat populations were separated in different clusters along PC 2, and fructan was the variable that contributed mostly to this separation. The ANOVA showed that the total dietary content, as well as arabinoxylan content, was mostly influenced by wheat population. Slightly lower contents were found in the heritage wheat populations than in the modern Dacke, with the lowest content in Ölandsvete. Fructan content can both be influenced by genetic background, and be an indication of a stressed plant and was found in the highest content in the modern variety Dacke. However, the differences between the samples were rather small and more research is needed before any general conclusion can be drawn.
The expansion of Stockholm’s metro : a study on sustainability in the project to Nacka and söderort
Stockholm’s metro has been running for over 70 years, in order to respond to therapid population growth in the Stockholm region, several investments in public transportation have been initiated. This thesis aims to investigate sustainability in public transport, regarding Stockholm’s metro. The thesis investigates how sustainability and environmental values appear in the expansion of Stockholm's metro to Nacka and söderort. By conducting a text analysis of an official documentwritten by the County Council, complemented with Thompson’s (2000b) framework which is used to identify environmental values. The result of the study shows that sustainability is prominent in the expansion and that environmental values, according to Thompson's framework, could be identified, specifically the balance between humans and the environment. The study also shows that expandingthe metro can contribute to ecological, economic and social sustainability in the future. The expansion enables sustainable traffic solutions and creates competitivepublic transport which contributes to the city’s growth
The transition towards sustainable food systems : A study on the development of aquaponics andits market penetration in Sweden
A food system includes many processes and actors that interact at different levels to maintain human` access to food. As the need for the food increases due to population growth, the activities associated with obtaining the food led to pressure on the environment. Climate change, nitrogen and phosphorus flows, ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, and extinction of species are directly related to the agri-food system. Therefore, transforming food production in line with the principles of the SDGs is a major challenge for all of humanity. Aquaponics (AP) is an innovative method of food production that offers sustainability solutions and therefore may be an option for the agri-food transformation. The aim of this thesis was to understand the opportunities and barriers for AP development in Sweden and how AP may penetrate the mainstream market. A qualitative study was conducted with representatives of the Swedish agri-food system where the data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed throw the theoretical lens of the multi-level perspective (MLP) and the concept of protective space. Results showed that there are possibilities as well as blocking mechanisms for the development of AP in Sweden concerning conventional fish and vegetable production. To leave the innovation space and integrate into the market, it is necessary to transform the regime by stretching the legislation and changing the norms and routine for the AP integrated system. Since the AP product fits the norms of the market and the consumers food culture, its further distribution depends on enlightenment and marketing strategies
Viticulture in cold climate toward more sustainable wine production
This literature study investigates viticulture in a cold climate and how climate change could contribute to a more sustainable wine production. This study aims to investigate if wine production in cold climate regions could create a dynamic balance between productivity and the consumption of natural resources. The second aim is to identify the challenges and opportunities for a sustainable viticulture in cold climates concerning environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The results show that several factors affect viticulture productivity in cold climate countries such as climate factors (frost, high precipitation, short summer, temperature fluctuation), soil management, nutritional management, diseases, and production cost. Several sustainable challenges lead to environmental, social, and economic impacts. The use of fossil fuels, pesticides and chemical fertilizers can affect human health and the environment. There are good opportunities for building sustainable viticulture in a cold climate region by achieving the three dimensions of sustainability. In the environmental dimension practices such as site selection, an adaptation of new cultivars, mechanization, change of viticulture training system, good soil management, proper nutrition management, and the use of renewable energy should be applied. In the economic dimension improving energy and water efficiency (reducing cost), more sustainable training in agriculture and innovation, creating a new network in the supply chain to improve economies, and brand reputation are important. In the social dimension, cold climate viticulture would enhance local cooperation and communication, create local employment opportunities, promote healthy wine production that ensures respect for family standards, values, and beliefs, support local farmers, and promote worker health
Redlighet inom livsmedelshantering
In recent decades, interest in food safety has increased throughout the world and not least in Sweden. Honesty and integrity are a recurring concept in the European Parliament and Council regulations related to food safety, and therefore this subject immediately became interesting to take a closer look at and examine whether the law regarding honesty in food handling is really complied with in different companies.
To investigate if the legislation is complied with and at the same time gain a deeper understanding of the subject, two methods were chosen independently of each other. One method is to collect information from different companies through inspections whereas the second method is to collect data from an expert panel on the subject.
After completing the investigation, it turns out that the companies do follow the legislation. However, the expert panel had different views regarding reasons why the legislation is not always followed but the recurring theme is money
Understanding the social dimension of sustainable agriculture
The current food systems need to become more sustainable, and this involves the creation of balance between the economic, environmental and social dimension of these systems. The social dimension, however, is least clearly conceptualized and likely to be overlooked when the issues are not very obvious as this is the case for many regions in the global north. Switzerland, as a country in the global north, invests great sums of money to improve agricultures environmental performance and to secure public goods. But low income, the resulting precarious situations and financial pressure, long working hours and no holidays describe agriculture in Switzerland and especially the lives of farmers as well. By applying Q-Methodology, this study aims to identify key perspectives Swiss dairy farmers have about the social dimensions of sustainable agriculture.
To gather statements, representing the understanding of the social dimension of sustainable agriculture by Swiss dairy farmers, two focus groups were conducted with the starting question: “What does the social dimension of sustainable farming mean to you?”. The data gathered during these focus groups was processed into 40 statements and these were sorted in forced distribution by 23 respondents, before a factor analysis was performed.
This resulted in five perspectives representing 59.27% of the studies variance, from which four where interpretable into coherent perspectives and accordingly labelled. The “equality-perspective” is covering the most variance in this study and focuses on equal opportunities in agriculture and succession. The “passing on a successful business-perspective”, in contrast disagrees strongly with these equality statements while valuing statements regarding a successful business that can be passed on to the next generation high. The “family and friends-perspective” similarly desires a successful business but more importantly, is focused on the relations with family and friends. And the “education-perspective” agrees most with education related statements. Moreover, it was seen that the financial dimension can not be disconnected from the social discourse. Income was frequently discussed during the focus groups and the resulting statements were mostly agreed with by the sorting-exercise respondents. It was also seen that many of the perspectives disagreed with the same two statements which leads to the interpretation that the vanishing of farms and the ongoing rise of digitalisation in agriculture are not important social issues among the identified perspectives in this study.
