Insect communities are a vital part of ecosystems and are today threatened by species extinction and loss of biodiversity. While several drivers of biodiversity loss have been identified, industrial land-use (e.g mining) causing alterations in habitats is one potential driver. In the present study, we examine the effects of mining operations on insect communities in northern Sweden. Using 120 samples from pan traps located close to two major open pit mines (Aitik and Svappavaara) we studied the effects of dust deposition, proximity to mines tailing dams as well as loss of canopy cover on insect biodiversity metrics. We found that insect abundance was higher with proximity to mines tailing dams, potentially due to generalist taxa thriving in degraded habitats. Both dust deposition originating from mines and loss of canopy cover might be factors affecting insect communities and continued research could potentially reveal more complex effects. While the influence of environmental variables for community composition could not be detected, our data show trends of distinctions among sites, potentially due to parasitoid-host relationships
This report studies three different maps portraying the areas around Ringsjö lakes. Two of these maps are historical maps from 1865 and 1915. The study of these maps was done in the Geographic Information System QGIS. The historical maps lacked coordinates and had to be georeferenced to be used properly in QGIS. With all maps at the same coordinates, overlapping with one another, the map that covered the smallest area and thus was limiting the scope of our survey was identified. In this case the 1915 map. Further the survey area was divided in two, as there was an expected difference between the regions north and south of the lakes. Largely believed to be due to a difference in soil. The south having more fertile soil. The areas on each map identified as forests were created into raster/polygon layers, to be analyzed. They were also grouped into groups based on whether it was a deciduous or coniferous forest. On the 1865 and 1915 maps the deciduous forest was also split into two groups to differentiate significantly sparser areas. On the newer 2015 map the deciduous forest was split into two groups one for pine and one for spruce.
The results revealed an overall increase of forest area in the north whereas in the south there was a general decrease. This is due to the difference in soil. In the north the prior outfields and grazing grounds for cattle were either planted or let be overgrown by forest. In the south, where the soil was better, there was a greater incentive to cultivate them.
There was also a noticeable difference in the species composition. An increase of deciduous trees was noted and particularly with spruce. The reason for this is the increase in knowledge and experience of these species. As well as the fact that the spruce yielded higher profit than the beech, which had been a popular choice in species before
The Swedish sawmill industries are searching for new technologies that aim to meet a more competitive market, demands for efficiency, sustainability and higher costs. With new technologies like Computed Tomography (CT) where internal features of logs can be scanned, the sawmills can optimize yield, enhance product quality and achieve traceability throughout the whole production chain. The adoption of the technology has been limited due to high initial investment cost, uncertain investment returns and a complex implementation process.
This study explores factors that influence the investing decisions in CT technology, focusing on the motives, benefits, and challenges encountered by Swedish sawmills. To answer the study`s aim, a qualitative approach that consist of semi-structured interviews, with respondents from sawmills, both with and without CT technology. The interviews have been thematically analyzed to uncover key findings about implementation and operational impacts of CT technology.
The study found that when implemented in the right way, CT technology can improve yield, value recovery and make it possible to produce high quality products. Early adopters of the CT technology use it to achieve traceability in the whole process from log to product. The technology gives the possibility to know what products you can produce before the sawing. With new directives, necessary measures are needed to achieve traceability in the process.
Despite these advantages, the spread of the CT technology is very limited. Findings showed that sawmills with lower turnover might struggle with justifying the high cost and the complex utilization of the technology. The results revealed that an implementation of CT technology is a difficult process with large amounts of data received. If a sawmill can overcome the investment cost and the complicated implementation phase, then the investment can be beneficial. The technology is early in its innovation phase and in the future CT scanners might be smaller and easier to implement in existing sawmill systems which could give more sawmills the ability to use the benefits with CT technology
The beach promenade along Ume River : a design proposal with the help of pocket parks
This thesis explores and reflects on the potential of ‘pocket parks’ as a concept and idea to support a design process within the field of landscape architecture.
The design proposal is situated in the city of Umeå in northern Sweden, in collaboration with the local municipality, and focuses on a section of the waterfront promenade between the areas of Öbacka strand and Strömpilen. Emphasis is placed on the promenade’s unique characteristics, such as its wide and far-reaching views, its dry-meadow qualities, and the municipality’s desire for water access.
Additional themes - such as context and connections, green infrastructure, noise, topography, cultural history, landslide risk and erosion, bathing culture and safe swimming - are also addressed.
Jadwiga Krupinska’s method presented in the book ‘What an Architecture Student Should Know’, specifically ‘Analysis through Synthesis’, is applied as a meta-process to address the research questions. However, it is interpreted and simplified to fit the scope of the thesis and to make the somewhat nebulous design process more comprehensible for the reader.
Based on the findings, it can be concluded that pocket parks can serve as a supportive tool in the design process, as they offer niches relevant for creating site-specific spatial qualities within small areas - a highly relevant aspect for narrow waterfront promenades - and play an important role in urban planning overall
The bacterial intestinal biota of wild fish populations in Sweden : a study of how fish farming can affect the intestinal biota of the wild fish populations in Swedish lakes
I Sverige sker matfiskodling vanligen i öppna kassar placerade i naturliga vattendrag.
samtliga tre populationer dominerade fylumet Firmicutes, men sedan varierade resterande
dominerade fyla.
resterande 180. Renibacterium salmoninarum förekom med låg men likartad prevalens i tarmfloran hos fisk från båda sjöarna. Flavobacterium spp. förekom endast i fiskar från Hornavan
medan Yersinia ruckeri endast förekom i Storuman.
fiskodling.

placed in natural watercourses. The way this cage culture system is designed allows wild fish to
easily come into contact with waste material from the aquaculture facilities. The aim of this study
was to investigate how the bacterial intestinal microbiota of wild fish is affected by contact with
fish farms. This was done by investigating which bacterial groups dominated the intestinal microbiota of two wild fish populations, one from a lake where fish farming occurs and one from a lake
without such activity. The intestinal microbiota was also examined regarding the presence of
specific bacterial opportunists and pathogens such as Renibacterium salmoninarum,
Flavobacterium spp., Aeromonas spp. and Yersinia ruckeri.
The total study population consisted of gut samples from 185 fish of varying species, of which 180
were wild and five farmed. 95 of the wild fish came from Lake Hornavan, a lake where no fish
farming occurs, and 85 came from Lake Storuman, a lake with several cage farms. The bacterial
composition of the intestinal microbiota was determined by PCR-based analysis by using the 16S
rRNA as a genetic marker for taxonomy.
There were differences in the composition of the gut microbiota between the two lakes. Farmed
fish also differed from the wild populations. In all three of the populations, the phylum Firmicutes
dominated, while the remaining dominating phyla in the populations varied. However, when the
intestinal flora of the fish was studied on an individual level no clear differences could be seen
between the two wild populations from the lakes, but the farmed fish differed from the wild fish.
Renibacterium salmoninarum occurred at a low and similar prevalence in the intestinal flora of
fish from both lakes. Flavobacterium spp. occurred only in fish from Lake Hornavan while
Yersinia ruckeri only occurred in Lake Storuman. Both bacteria were found in low prevalence.
Mycobacterium spp., a potentially zoonotic bacterial group, had a high prevalence in the gut
samples from both lakes and no significant difference could be seen between the two lakes. The
occurrence of other potential zoonoses was low. Aeromonas spp. occurred in both lakes and the
prevalence was higher in Lake Storuman than in Lake Hornavan. The prevalence of A. salmonicida was also higher in Lake Storuman and could therefore be a possible effect of fish farming on
the intestinal microbiota of wild fish.
This study shows how the bacterial intestinal flora differs between two lakes, which forms the
basis for further studies on the intestinal microbiota of wild fish and the impact of fish farms on
wild populations. Further research on gut microbiota is suggested to explore the entire gut
microbiome, as well as to see if the differences documented in this study occur in other lakes with
or without fish farms.

The light in the tunnel : a design proposal on how covering the railway can promote climate adaptation and sustainable urban planning
Climate changes are a fact, and every sector needs to work with climate adaptation in the cities to strengthen the resilience against coming heat waves and powerful downpours. This project introduces an alternative to changes of land uses in the scenario where the railroad will be buried underground. Furthermore, it is being investigated if this could contribute to making Uppsala a more climate-adapted city with higher canopy cover and efficient stormwater management where the water can be used for irrigation of vegetation. The result shows that by burying the railway, there is now space for 29 new buildings, 11 blocks, 18500 sqm of new parkland, 199 new street trees. This leads to the city healing as the barrier effect is removed, more social values are offered, and the canopy coverage increases. Additionally, a park in the project area has been designed in greater detail. There is a proposal for how stormwater is managed with surface infiltration through gutters and an underground system where a reinforcement layer is used to store and irrigate plant beds
Rekreationsupplevelser i Umeås skogsmiljö : Schackrutehuggning kontra traditionell föryngringsavverkning
Today’s increasing interest in continuous cover forestry methods has led to several attempts of alternative management practices instead of the traditional clearcutting method. Checkerboard cutting is a continuous cover method that is used in a few experiments in Sweden. One of these experiments is in the peri-urban recreational area around Nydala lake in Umeå. Previous studies have researched the potential use of continuous cover forestry in urban areas to increase recreational values in comparison to clearcutting, but there are no studies that compare the recreational values from clearcutting with checkerboard cutting. In this study we focus on the recreational value, the social value that people gain from their experiences in nature, because it is an important aspect in promoting public health. Using a web survey distributed in Umeå in 2024, we have analysed if local visitors experienced differing recreational values of checkerboard cutting and clearcutting, as well as the potential differences in recreational value between summer and winter. Most of the respondents preferred forests with good accessibility and good visibility. Most comments from the survey were focused on personal perceptions of forestry methods where clearcutting was viewed negatively. The results showed that checkerboard cutting provides a higher perceived recreational value during both the summer and winter months in comparison to clearcutting during the same respective seasons. Age and gender showed no effect on these results. The results indicate that checkerboard cutting can be a better forestry method in comparison to clearcutting in maintaining the recreational values in the forest after felling
Effektivt kväveutnyttjande i höstvete
Today, there is considerable discussion about how to increase the use efficiency of different types of resources. This is of interest from both an ecological and an economic perspective. In this report, the nitrogen use efficiency in winter wheat has been evaluated. The purpose of this field study was to examine how different types of mineral fertilizers, based on nitrate or ammonium and applied in either solid or liquid form, affect the availability of nitrogen. The aim was to gain a better understanding of how nitrogen remains in different nitrogen pools in the soil, depending on the nitrogen form, application method, and soil type under Swedish conditions.
The field trial was conducted at two locations in Västergötland, Sweden: Bjertorp and Lanna. These locations represent a sandy soil and a clay soil, respectively. In the trial, solid and liquid forms of calcium nitrate and ammonium sulphate were used. The fertilizers were enriched with 10% 15N to enable measurements of the applied nitrogen in the different nitrogen pools in the soil. Fertilization was carried out in cylinders of two different depths, allowing for two sampling times. The trial was conducted without a growing crop. After soil sampling, various analyses were performed to measure mineral, immobilized, and fixed nitrogen.
Analysis of mineral nitrogen showed that solid calcium nitrate resulted in significantly more mineral nitrogen than liquid ammonium sulphate. The ammonium-based treatments contained almost exclusively NH₄⁺ mineral nitrogen at the early sampling. By the late sampling, a large portion had been nitrified in the sandy soil, while in the clay soil, mineral nitrogen decreased—likely due to fixation or ammonia volatilization. The nitrate-based fertilizers contributed mineral nitrogen in the form of nitrate. In the clay soil, mineral nitrogen levels decreased from the early to the late sampling, whereas they increased in the sandy soil.
The results for microbial nitrogen showed no clear distinctions between treatments, locations, or sampling times. This may be because immobilization was not influenced by the tested parameters, or because the method was not reliable. The analysis of fixed nitrogen only reflected the proportion of total fixed nitrogen derived from the applied fertilizer. Therefore, the treatments—solid and liquid ammonium sulphate—can only be compared within the same location and sampling time. A distinction between the treatments was only observed at the late sampling in the sandy soil.
In summary, the analyses did not provide the comprehensive picture of nitrogen distribution that was intended, mainly due to methodological uncertainties, lack of significant differences, and incomplete results. Consequently, this study does not confirm as clearly as previous research that liquid fertilizers are less effective than solid ones, as the differences appear to depend both on the physical form of the fertilizer and the nitrogen type used
Population trends of ospreys Pandion haliaetus in Central Sweden
European Ospreys have experienced repeated declines and recoveries throughout modern history. The overall number of breeding Ospreys in this region has increased since 1970 after suffering severe effects from compounds such as DDT and PCB in the decades prior. However, while Sweden can be seen as a stronghold for the European osprey, national population numbers rely heavily on unprecise estimations. This paper explores an osprey population, by analysing and comparing unique time series data on breeding ospreys in Västra Mälaren, Sweden, between two time periods – 1977-1986 and 2005-2011. The number of breeding attempts, successful attempts, number of fledglings and nest trees was analysed using various statistical tools, including general linear models. Furthermore, significant findings were put in comparison to existing literature on reported population changes and their driving factors. Results show a significant decline in the number of breeding attempts (23 %) between the two periods. There was no statistically significant difference in breeding success or number of fledged chicks between the two periods. 71 % of all attempts took place in pine, 25 % in spruce and 4 % in various deciduous trees with no significant difference between the periods. As the osprey mostly breeds in pine, the notably high proportion of nests in spruce may be seen as an indication of a scarcity of suitable nest trees, especially if white-tailed eagles compete for nest trees. Using literature data on adult to juvenile survival rates together with this study’s reproductive data, the study also investigated how much survival rates and proportion of non-breeders need to change to cause the observed decline in number. A three percent decline in adult survival would be enough to reflect the observed population decline in Västra Mälaren. Hence, factors as reduced survival in relation to migration might also be the main driving factor behind the decline. The proven decline of ospreys in the study area contrast national estimates of an increasing or stable population.
How can green waste become a resource in the design and maintenance of our outdoor environments? The ambition of the project is to inspire and challenge people to dare to design and manage green waste in park and forest environments through an idea catalogue. The emphasis is on how to combine design and maintenance, which is in line with the intention of the European Landscape Convention that the landscape is a common asset and responsibility (Riksantikvarieämbetet, 2025). The project focuses on the values of human experience with a beneficial effect on nature. Today, there is a strong ideal of how a park should be arranged (Persson, et al., 2009), while forests are managed based on their potential for yield (Skogsstyrelsen, 2024). A more tolerant view of what a park should look like, and what a forest should offer, provides opportunities for new ways of working that benefit resource management and protect the different values of places. This type of aesthetic and function in parks and forests lacks collective sources of inspiration today. We have therefore developed an idea catalogue that introduces the concept of circular aesthetics, a new ideal within landscape architecture, which shows the potential of green waste as a resource and building block in the design of parks and forests.
The target group of the idea catalogue is professionals and students in the design, maintenance and planning of forests and parks, as well as other interested parties. It shows different principles for what can be designed with coarse green waste such as straw, branches, logs and stumps. Variants of each principle are presented with illustrations and texts describing building blocks, construction, scale and practical tips. At the end of the idea catalogue, examples are presented from Våxnäsparken in Karlstad and Hägerneholms kulturblandskog in Täby where we, together with maintenance staff, applied some of the principles described in the idea catalogue. The workflow of the implementation followed the steps: Reading and understanding a landscape, Managing a landscape and Shaping a landscape, which are described in the idea catalogue. The goal was to show how the principles can be adapted to the conditions, function and aesthetic values of a place and what new values can arise when we design through management.
Trends in society indicate an increased willingness to reuse and conserve resources (Drömträdgården 2024; Trädgårdstider 2025), and we interpret this as society being ready for change. Our idea catalogue contributes to this development by acting as a foundation for discussion, encouraging curiosity and inspiring the realization of the working methods and ideas presented. In this kappa, we present the project's background, method and results and conclude with a discussion of the benefits of the project and the ideal circular aesthetics.
In summary, we see the ideal of circular aesthetics as a sustainable way forward as it promotes reuse, collaboration and resource efficiency that create added value that not only strengthens human experiences but also benefits biodiversity. Circular aesthetics is thus a way to understand, manage and shape our outdoor environments in a sustainable way by combining design and management
