    The growth of finisher pigs between two different feeding systems : Wet-Dry feeding with integrated water nipple and liquid feeding

    I produktion av slaktgrisar runt om i världen förekommer olika utfodringssystem. Den här rapporten är skriven för att åskådliggöra om produktionsresultatet skiljer sig åt mellan torroch blötutfodrade slaktgrisar. Mer än hälften av de svenska slaktgrisbesättningarna utfodras med blötfoder. Blötutfodring innehåller mycket restprodukter från livsmedelsindustrin och produkterna kommer främst från mejeri (vassle), destilleri (drank), bageri (bröd och kex) och energisektorn (biodrivmedel). Då företag i dessa branscher själva blivit bättre på att ta vara på sina biprodukter kan tillgången på dessa fortsätta minska i framtiden. Syftet med rapporten är att klargöra för läsaren om det finns en skillnad eller inte i ett utfört foderförsök, baserat på två olika utfodringssystem, torrutfodring i foderautomat med vattennippel och blötutfodring i långtråg. I försöket ingick totalt 160 grisar som delades upp i fyra grupper med två olika behandlingar A och B under två perioder. Behandling A utfodrades med torrfoder (TF) ad-lib (fri tillgång på foder) och behandling B utfodrades med blötfoder (BF) tre gånger om dagen. Frågeställningen i studien var att se om det fanns en skillnad mellan behandlingarna i tillväxt, foderförbrukning och klassning vid slakt. Grisarna utfodrade med TF växte signifikant bättre i period 2, ingen skillnad sågs mellan grupperna i period 1. Till nackdel för utfodring med TF sågs en högre foderförbrukning under båda perioderna. Gällande klassningen av grisar utfodrade med TF och BF visade resultatet en signifikant skillnad i båda perioderna. Skillnaden som uppstod var att de grisarna som utfodrades med TF hade en lägre köttprocent än de grisar som utfodrades med BF. Faktorer som kan ha påverkat resultatet ovan är att ad-lib utfodringen inte justerades efter rekommenderad tillväxtkurva samt att grisar utfodrade med TF fick en högre andel stora partiklar i foderblandningen. Båda dessa faktorer har kopplingar till skillnader i tillväxt och klassning för grisar. Resultatet visade att det krävs vidare studier i liknande försök för att med säkerhet kunna fastställa om det finns en skillnad eller inte beträffande tillväxten med de olika utfodringarna.In pig production worldwide, various feeding systems are used. This report investigate if there are differences in the production results due to different feeding system, wet-dry feeder presented with meal ad libitum with an integrated water nipple or wet feeding. A larger share in the production of finishing pig is fed with wet feed in Sweden. A cost advantaged is that wet feeding contains by-products from food companies, those products mainly come from dairy (whey), distillery (distillers grains), bakery (bread and biscuits) and energy sector (biofuel). Companies in those industries have become more efficient in handling of their by-products the availability will continue to decrease in the future. The purpose with this report is to clarify for the reader whether there is a difference in the outcome in the study related to the two described feeding system. This study included 160 Sammanfattning Abstract pigs, split into four different groups and two different feeding groups, A and B divided in two periods (period 1 and period 2). Group A were fed with dry feeding (TF) ad-libitum (free feed access) and group B were fed with wet feed (BF) three times a day. The study aimed to investigate whether there was a difference between the treatments in terms of daily growth rate, feed consumption and classification of carcasses. The pigs fed with TF showed significantly better growth in period 2, while no difference was observed between the groups in period 1. However, a disadvantage of feeding with TF was the higher feed consumption during both periods. Regarding the classification of pigs fed with TF and BF, the results indicated a significant difference in both periods. The difference that occurred was that the pigs fed with TF had a lower meat percentage compared to those fed with BF. Factors that may have influenced those results include the fact that ad-lib feeding was not adjusted according to the recommended growth curve, and that the pigs fed with TF received a higher proportion of large particles in the feed mixture. Both of those factors are associated with differences in growth and classification outcomes for the pigs. The conclusion drawn from these results is that further studies are needed to determine with certainty that there really is a difference in growth rate due to which feeding system that is used

    Habitat suitability analysis for visent (Bison bonasus) on Björkön island in Hjälmaren

    Around the globe, including Sweden, biodiversity is decreasing, and many invertebrate and plant species are threatened. One of the main reasons for the decline is the decrease in natural and semi-natural open grasslands due to intensified agriculture and land abandonment. Grazing has an important role in the maintenance of open grassland and has many benefits for the flora and fauna which reside in these habitats. The European Bison (Bison bonasus), Europe's largest now living land mammal, roamed Europe for thousands of years before it was declared extinct in the wild in the 1920’s. Soon thereafter the restoration efforts to bring back the European bison started and today it roams freely in Europe once more. Björkön is a 155 hectare island located in the lake Hjälmaren in central Sweden. It has been a nature reserve since 2019 and is mainly composed of open grassland, deciduous forests and wetland forests. The local authorities have made efforts to manage Björkön by grazing but it has not been enough to support the open landscape. The aim of this study was to analyse the habitat and area in relation to what criteria the European bison needs and to pinpoint possible conflicts if an introduction of the European bison would occur. To assess the current state of knowledge, a literature review regarding the European bison's preferred habitat and diet, and home range was done. In addition, maps of tree characteristics and main habitats on Björkön were created, and distance to the mainland was calculated. The habitat on Björkön seem to be beneficial for European bison, but may be too small for its regular home range. Furthermore, the distance to mainland on the north and south side of the islands is shorter than one kilometre and therefore there is a considerable risk that the European bison may reach the nearby mainland. The arable land and forests around the island are potential conflict areas because of damage to both farm crops and forests. European bison could however be beneficial when it comes to fulfil the needed grazing impact, keep the forests and open grassland clear of shrubs and overgrowth, and create a mosaic landscape that would benefit both the flora and fauna on Björkön

    Locomotion of reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) in relation to different environmental factors

    Africa is home to a unique animal- and plant life and contributing knowledge that in some way promote conservation of these species is vital for a functioning world in the future. The International union for conservation of nature has listed giraffes as vulnerable; as wild giraffe populations have declined by up to 40% over the past three decades, while 60% of all major wild herbivores in the world are threatened with extinction. This means that giraffes are a high priority to preserve. Giraffes play a significant role in biodiversity with contribute functions such as seed dispersal and pollination. Removing giraffes from ecosystems would have devastating consequences. The loss of giraffes can have consequences such as less pressure on the vegetation. An increased understanding of reticulated giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) activity in relation to various environmental factors can lead to new important knowledge about the species' natural behaviours and the reasons behind them. The aim of this study is to increase the understanding of how the activity patterns of reticulated giraffes in Ol Pejeta conservancy differ in relation to different environmental factors, such as moon phases and rainfall. This study was conducted in Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya by using camera traps that recorded the activity of the giraffes as well as information about moon phases and rainfall. The results showed that the activity of the giraffes is highest at the highest measured amount of precipitation during a 30- and 60-day period and at half-moon after new moon. Also, that the activity of the giraffes was at its lowest during full moon and the least measured amount of precipitation during a 30- and 60-day period. Contributing factors to the result may depend on the hunting luck of predators, access to food and water, and the structure of the herd

    Att överbrygga gapet mellan vetenskap och politik utan att gå över gränsen : en fallstudie av Klimatpolitiska rådet

    Climate change is advancing in severity globally and the scientific community’s warnings toward political representatives are proceeding. A lack of political action on scientific warnings gives rise to the idea of a ‘science-policy gap’, which assumes that science needs to become more politically applicable, and that politics need to act faster and better to mitigate climate change. To advance implementation of national and international climate goals, institutions called national climate councils are emerging. These organisations are created to give scientific support that is relevant for the political world. However, working between science and policy have proven to be a practice full of dilemmas and challenges. The organisations are expected to bridge worlds built on different logics that are not appropriate to merge. This thesis explores how the Swedish Climate Policy Council works between the borders of science and politics and investigates challenges and opportunities in this interaction to increase climate policy action. To unearth the scientific experts’ understandings of their work, interviews were conducted and analysed through theories of boundary work. This thesis suggests, based on experiences of practitioners, that governing documents from the political practice to the scientific, and vice versa, need to hold a certain openness to enable ‘double freedom of interpretation’. By not being too detailed, conditions are set for practices to contain agency on how to act. The study also illuminates the ‘issue of demarcation’, which brings to attention that sharp borders from the political practice seem to create an unnecessary distance toward the scientific sphere. This in turn may challenge the possibility for the climate council to develop recommendations that make sense for the Government. Finally, I highlight what I refer to as ‘boundary object effect’, where the space created by the climate council works as a meeting place for different practices to commonly address the science-policy gap. Further research is encouraged to explore how a variety of practices understand the science-policy interface, as this thesis illustrates the perspective of the scientific council members of the Swedish Climate Policy Council

    Listening to land users : a social representations theory lens on navigating land use challenges and carbon farming in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

    This thesis explores the perceptions of private, commercial land users in South Africa's Eastern Cape, focusing on their perceptions around land use challenges and the potential implementation of Spekboom carbon farming as a potentially sustainable agricultural practice. Spekboom, a succulent plant, has been identified for its potential in ecosystem restoration, that is hoped to be financed on a large-scale via voluntary carbon markets. Despite extensive research on the ecological benefits of Spekboom farming, there remains a significant gap in understanding the people influencing the implementation of such land use practices. Using Social Representations Theory as a framework, this study examines how land users conceptualize land use challenges and navigate possible land use transitions to overcome these in the study area. The research draws upon semi-structured interviews and observations conducted with private, commercial land users, offering insights into two distinct social representations: land use challenges as threats to livelihoods and land use challenges as threats to environmental integrity. The findings reveal that while most land users are generally open to sustainable practices such as Spekboom carbon farming, financial uncertainties, administrative challenges, and a lack of successful examples often inhibit widespread adoption. This study contributes to bridging the gap between ecological and social considerations in land use transformations, emphasizing the importance of understanding cultural as well as economic factors in land use transitions towards possibly more sustainable agricultural practices like Spekboom carbon farming

    Beräkning av drivningsekonomiska konsekvenser efter olika gödslingsbehandlingar

    Skogsgödsling gör att träden växer mer på en given tid. Tillväxtökningen leder till att drivningskostnaderna minskar per skördad volymenhet till följd av en grövre medelstamsvolym samt en högre virkestäthet. Den grövre medelstammen bidrar även till högre timmerandel och genererar en värdeökning för trädet. Det ekonomiska resultatet för avverkningen påverkas av gödslingskostnaden, drivningskostnaden samt virkesintäkten. Det ekonomiska resultatet benämns i den här studien som drivningsnetto där dessa tre faktorer har inkluderats. Syftet med det här examensarbetet var att undersöka hur gödsling med olika gödslingsmedel påverkar drivningsnettot. I studien har tre olika behandlingar studerats, två olika gödslingsmedel samt en kontroll. De två gödslingsmedel som undersöktes var bionäring (granulerad och hygieniserad rötrest av avloppsslam) och mineralgödsel. Studien baserades på data från Sveaskogs storskaliga gödslingsförsök som anlades 2006–2008, genom att 22 olika bestånd i närheten av Kalix/Överkalix gödslats med bionäring och mineralgödsel. I den här studien studerades gödslingens ekonomiska effekt vid ett av dessa bestånd. Denna försökslokal delades upp i 7 olika delområden där 2 gödslades med mineralgödsling, 2 med bionäring och de 3 resterande delområderna lämnades som kontroll. Ytorna med mineralgödsling gödslades med 308 kg N/ha, ytorna med bionäringen gödslades med 507 kg N/ha och kontrollen gödslades inte alls. Beståndet avverkades vintern 2017–2018. Baserat på medelstamsvolym, virkesförråd samt stamantal från avverkningen analyserades de olika behandlingarna med programmet hprAnalys för att beräkna gödslingseffekten och drivningskostnaden. Resultatet visade att båda gödslingsbehandlingarna gav högre tillväxt jämfört med kontrollen. För mineralgödslingen var tillväxten 26 m3fub högre per ha, och för bionäringen var tillväxten 30 m3fub per ha högre. Behandlingen med bionäringen resulterade även i grövst medelstamsvolym och även högst virkesintäkt per avverkad m3fub. Resultatet visade att drivningsnettot för kontrollen var högre jämfört med de olika gödslingsbehandlingarna. Mineralgödslingen visade sig generera lägst drivningsnetto jämfört med både kontrollen och bionäringen. Vid anläggningen av gödslingsförsöket var beståndet inte helt homogent där bland annat kontrollytan hade lägre stamantal vilket skapar viss osäkerhet i resultatet. Vidare studier bör därför läggas på att analysera drivningsnetton från ytterligare bestånd i gödslingsförsöket för att komplettera resultatet med underlag från fler bestånd. Ingen av gödslingsbehandlingarna visade sig ekonomiskt lönsamma utan påverkades stort av gödslingskostnaden. Resultatet visar därmed att det inte är ekonomiskt lönsamt att gödsla tall på svaga boniteter med de kvävegivor som studerats.Fertilization makes the trees grow more in a given time. The growth increase occurs mainly through larger diameter growth and lasts for about 10 years after the fertilization. The growth increase leads to a reduction in harvesting costs per harvested m3 due to a larger average stem volume and a higher total volume. The larger stems also contribute to a higher proportion of timber and generates an increase in the value of the tree. The economic result from the harvest is affected by the fertilization cost, the harvesting cost and the timber income. The economic result is in this study referred to the net income, where these three factors have been included. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how fertilization with different fertilizers affects the net income. In the study, three different treatments were studied, two different fertilizers and a control. The two fertilizers studied were biofertilizer (sewage sludge) and mineral fertilizer. The study is based on Sveaskog's large-scale fertilization trials that were established in 2006-2008, where 22 different stands near Kalix/Överkalix were fertilized with biofertilizer and mineral fertilizer. In this work, the fertilization effect at the Mörttjärn experimental site outside Överkalix was studied. The site was fertilized in 2006, with a dosage of 308 kg N/ha for the mineral fertilization, 507 kg N/ha for the biofertilization and the control was not fertilized at all. The stand with the three different treatments (mineral fertilization, biofertilization and control) covered a total of 55.8 ha and was harvest in 2017-2018. Based on the data from the harvest and fertilization, the revenues, fertilization costs and harvesting costs of the different treatments were analysed with hpsAnalys. The results showed that both fertilization treatments gave higher growth than the control. For the mineral fertilization the growth was 26 solid cubic meter of wood under bark (m3sub) per ha higher, and for the biofertilization the growth was 30 m3sub per ha higher. For mineral fertilization, the timber income was 508 SEK/ m3sub, for biofertilizer the timber income was 510 SEK/ m3sub, and for the control the timber income was 505 SEK/ m3sub. The results showed that the net revenue for the control was higher both per harvested m3sub and per ha compared to the different fertilization treatments. Mineral fertilization turned out to generate a lower income on both revenue per ha and per harvested m3sub compared to the control and the biofertilizer. In the beginning of the study stand was not completely homogeneous where, among other things, the control area had lower stem numbers, which creates some uncertainty in the result. Further studies should therefore be conducted to analyse the net revenue from additional stands in the fertilization trial to complement the results with data from more stands. None of the fertilized treatments proved to be economically viable, they were strongly influenced by the cost of fertilization. The results thus show that it is not economically viable to fertilize pine on poor soils with the nitrogen rates studied

    An agroecological inquiry into the sustainability of a small-scale goat farm in a mountain village in northern Italy

    This dissertation addresses the sustainability profile of Capra Punk, a goat farm situated in a mountain village in Trentino, in northern Italy. Through a blend of qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods, using participatory observation and questionnaires, the study evaluates Capra Punk’s sustainability from an agroecological point of view. It reveals that Capra Punk is facing considerable sustainability challenges despite having come far in its agroecological transition. Financial and temporal constraints, along with an asymmetrical subsidy landscape, present obstacles for the farmer, Ernesto, in maintaining and developing the business. Although Capra Punk aligns with the objectives of the Italian CAP strategy and the Trento Five Priority Goals (SproSS), there is a lack of appropriate support for small-scale farmers like Ernesto. Consequently, this case study highlights the broader systemic challenges within agricultural support systems and the need for more effective alignment between policy objectives and their practical implementation

    The relationship between the taxonomy regulation and profitability

    Begreppet hållbarhet är högaktuellt; för samhället som helhet, företag och myndigheter. Resurser ska bevaras för framtida generationer och globala hållbarhetsmål ska uppnås. Företag som vill möta utmaningarna och anpassar sin verksamhet utefter, antas ha mycket till gagn, i bättre lönsamhet och ökad motståndskraft enligt vad de teoretiska ramverken legitimitets teorin och intressentteorin skulle föreslå. Den Europeiska unionen har i dagsläget infört nya redovisningsstandarder, som taxonomiförordningen. Detta dels för att harmonisera och göra hållbarhetsrapporteringen jämförbar inom EU zonen, vilket på sikt ska styra kapital mot verksamheter som bidrar till en cirkulär omställning. Tidigare studier som behandlat hållbarhetsredovisningens påverkan på företags diverse lönsamhetsmått visar blandade resultat. Författarna utforskar i detta arbete vad implementeringen av taxonomiförordningen har haft för inverkan på de svenska företagens lönsamhet. Med avseende på de två initiala räkenskapsåren 2022 och 2023, då taxonomin trädde i kraft först 2022. Författarna samlade in sekundärdata från 131 svenska företag som omfattades av taxonomin för räkenskapsår 2022 samt 2023. Modellen som användes i studien var i form av multivariataregressioner enligt minsta kvadrat metoden. Där beroende variabler utgjordes av lönsamhetsnyckeltalen avkastning på eget/totalt kapital samt Tobins Q; ett mått som mäter hur ett företag värderas på marknaden. Oberoende variabler utgjordes av taxonomins nyckeltal i de tre olika ekonomiska aktiviteterna; omsättning, kapitalutgifter och driftsutgifter. För kontrollvariabler användes företagens skuldsättningsgrad samt omsättning. Initiala regressioner visade på icke-signifikanta samband mellan de taxonomiska nivåerna och lönsamhetsmåtten. Ytterligare regressioner upprättades, där företag som inte kunde redovisa siffror enligt taxonomin sållades bort. Där fanns ett negativt samband på signifikant nivå för kapitalutgifter relaterade till miljömässig verksamhet och avkastning på eget kapital för 2023. Trots detta är slutsatsen att taxonomin inte kan anses ha haft ett signifikant samband med lönsamhet för svenska företag som berördes av implementeringens första två år. Författare utvecklar förslag för framtida forskning och menar att förordningens syfte och effektivitet i bidragandet för en klimatneutral region 2050 återstår att se. The concept of sustainability is highly relevant for society as a whole, businesses, and authorities. Resources must be preserved for future generations, and global sustainability goals must be achieved. Companies that want to meet these challenges and adapt their operations accordingly are believed to gain significantly, with improved profitability and increased resilience, as suggested by theoretical frameworks like legitimacy theory and stakeholder theory. The European Union has currently introduced new reporting standards, such as the Taxonomy Regulation. This is partly to harmonize and make sustainability reporting comparable within the EU zone, which in the long run aims to direct capital towards activities that contribute to a circular transition. Previous studies examining the impact of sustainability reporting on various profitability measures of companies have shown mixed results. The authors explore in this work the impact of the implementation of the Taxonomy Regulation on the profitability of Swedish companies. With regard to the first two fiscal years, 2022 and 2023, when the taxonomy first came into force in 2022. The authors collected secondary data from 131 Swedish companies covered by the taxonomy for fiscal years 2022 and 2023. The model used in the study was in the form of multivariate regressions according to the least squares method. The dependent variables consisted of the profitability key figures return on equity/total capital and Tobin's Q; a measure that assesses how a company is valued in the market. The independent variables consisted of the taxonomy's key figures in the three different economic activities: turnover, capital expenditures, and operating expenses. For control variables, the companies' debt ratio and turnover were used. Initial regressions showed non-significant relationships between the taxonomic levels and profitability measures. Further regressions were established, where companies that could not report figures according to the taxonomy were excluded. There was a significant negative relationship for capital expenditures related to environmental activities and return on equity for 2023. Despite this, the conclusion is that the taxonomy cannot be considered to have had a significant relationship with profitability for Swedish companies affected by the implementation's first two years. The authors develop suggestions for future research and state that the regulation's purpose and efficiency in contributing to a climate-neutral region by 2050 remain to be seen

    Effekter av samodling av raps (Brassica napus) med baljväxter på förekomsten av rapsjordloppan (Psylliodes chrysocephala)

    Jordbruket står inför stora utmaningar när det gäller att möta hållbarhetsmål samtidigt som man ska säkerställa tillräcklig matproduktion. Raps (Brassica napus) är en viktig gröda som odlas för produktion av rapsolja och som foder, samt spelar en avgörande roll i växtföljder för att förbättra jordhälsa. En av de största utmaningarna är att hantera skadegörare såsom rapsjordloppan (Psylliodes chrysocephala) utan att överanvända kemiska bekämpningsmedel, vilket leder till resistensproblem och negativa miljöeffekter. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka om samodling av raps med grödor som åkerböna (Vicia faba L.), klöver (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) och gräsärta (Lathyrus sativus L.) kan minska populationerna av rapsjordloppan och därmed minska behovet av kemiska bekämpningsmedel. Studien genomfördes genom försöksodlingar i Lönnstorp, Skåne, där raps samodlades med de valda grödorna under olika odlingsförhållanden. Data samlades in genom att räkna antalet larver av rapsjordloppor per planta och mäta plantvikt, samt genomföra statistiska analyser med ANOVA och post-hoc tester. Resultaten visade att vissa samodlingsbehandlingar signifikant minskade antalet larver av rapsjordloppor per planta jämfört med renbestånd av raps. Behandlingar som inkluderade klöver och våråkerböna visade särskilt lovande resultat med lägre larvantal och mindre variation i standardavvikelse. Samodling visade sig vara en effektiv metod för att minska skador orsakade av rapsjordloppan och kan därmed bidra till att minska användningen av kemiska bekämpningsmedel. Resultaten överensstämmer delvis med tidigare forskning, men ytterligare studier behövs för att bekräfta fynden över flera odlingssäsonger och platser. Samodling av raps med baljväxter kan vara en hållbar strategi för att hantera rapsjordloppan, minska användningen av kemiska bekämpningsmedel och främja ett mer hållbart jordbruk. Framtida forskning bör fokusera på långsiktiga effekter och utvärdera samodlingens bredare applicerbarhet på andra skadegörare och markhälsa.Agriculture faces significant challenges in meeting sustainability goals while ensuring sufficient food production. One of the biggest challenges is managing pests such as the cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) without overusing chemical pesticides, which leads to resistance issues and negative environmental impacts. Rapeseed (Brassica napus) is an important crop grown for rapeseed oil production and as feed, and it plays a crucial role in crop rotation to improve soil health. The aim of this study was to investigate whether intercropping rapeseed with crops such as faba bean (Vicia faba L.), clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.), and grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) can reduce the populations of the cabbage stem flea beetle and thereby decrease the need for chemical pesticides. The study was conducted through field trials in Lönnstorp, where rapeseed was intercropped with the selected crops under various growing conditions. Data were collected by counting the number of larvae per plant and measuring plant weight, followed by statistical analyses using ANOVA and post-hoc tests. The results showed that certain intercropping treatments significantly reduced the number of larvae per plant compared to pure stands of rapeseed. Treatments that included clover and faba bean showed particularly promising results with lower larval numbers and less variation in standard deviation. Intercropping proved to be an effective method to reduce damage caused by the cabbage stem flea beetle and could thereby contribute to reducing the use of chemical pesticides. The results are consistent with previous research, but further studies are needed to confirm the findings over multiple growing seasons and locations. Intercropping rapeseed with legumes can be a sustainable strategy for managing the cabbage stem flea beetle, reducing the use of chemical pesticides, and promoting more sustainable agriculture. Future research should focus on long-term effects and evaluate the broader applicability of intercropping to other pests and soil health

Bevarandet av dessa arter är viktigt för den genetiska mångfalden, för växtförädling samt för framtida utveckling av mediciner och livsmedel. För att bibehålla god kvalitet i de lagrade fröna krävs regelbundna grobarhetstester. Detta kräver kunskap om de artspecifika groningsförhållanden som krävs och arternas frövila och officiella groningsprotokoll saknas ofta, speciellt för vilda arter. I detta arbete utfördes groningsförsök på fyra vilda växtarter med syfte att bryta deras frövila. Atriplex hortensis, Crambe maritima, Ligusticum scoticum och Myrrhis odorata behandlades med en köldstratifiering på ca 50 dagar efterföljt av behandling med GA3, H2O2 och KNO3 och kontrollbehandling av kranvatten. Atriplex hortensis och Ligusticum scoticum grodde efter ca 50 dagars stratifiering, och ytterligare behandlingar gynnade inte groningen signifikant från kontrollbehandlingen. Crambe maritima gynnades av behandling med GA3. Myrrhis odorata hade mycket låg grobarhet och kräver ytterligare undersökning för att hitta metoder att bryta frövilan, troligtvis genom längre stratifiering och inkubation. H2O2 hade generellt negativ påverkan på groningen, men bör undersökas vidare i olika koncentration och behandlingstid. Tetrazoliumtest utfördes vilket visade att metabolisk aktivitet förekom i en majoritet av de testade fröna.Genetic resources in the form of crop wild relatives, as well as wild medicinal and aromatic plant species are stored as seeds in gene banks, for example the Nordic genetic resource center (NordGen). Preservation of these species is important for genetic diversity, plant breeding and future developments of food and medicines. To maintain good quality in the stored seeds regular germination tests need to be performed. These tests require knowledge about the species-specific germination requirements and seed dormancy, and oftentimes no official germination protocols for wild species exist. In this thesis germination tests were performed on four wild or naturalized species, with the goal of breaking their dormancy. Atriplex hortensis, Crambe maritima, Ligusticum scoticum and Myrrhis odorata were treated with a cold stratification of ~50 days, and then treated with GA3, H2O2, KNO3, and a control treatment of tap water. Atriplex hortensis and L. scoticum germinated after the cold stratification, and the additional treatments did not improve germination more than the control treatment. Germination improved in Crambe maritima after treatment with GA3. Myrrhis odorata had very low germination rates and further studies are required to find methods of breaking the dormancy, possibly through longer stratification and incubation. H2O2 had an overall negative effect on germination, especially of seeds of smaller size, but could be studied further to find better suited concentrations and treatment times. A tetrazolium test was performed which showed metabolic activity in a majority of the tested seeds
