    Get PDF
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) anthocyanins serve as both colorants and bioactive compounds but are highly unstable to pH, light, heat, metal ions, oxygen, and enzymes. Microencapsulation using appropriate techniques and matrix materials enhances the stability of anthocyanins. This study aimed to compare the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of spray-dried microencapsulated roselle anthocyanins using a single matrix (maltodextrin) and binary matrix combinations. The binary matrices included maltodextrin-alginate at ratios of 49:1, 47:3, and 46:4, and maltodextrin-carboxymethyl cellulose at ratios of 49.5:0.5, 49:1, and 48:2. The use of a binary matrix improved the physicochemical properties of the microcapsules. The selected matrices, maltodextrin-alginate (49:1) and maltodextrin-carboxymethyl cellulose (49:1), produced microcapsules with the following characteristics, a yield of 52.80% and 50.67%, a pink-colored powder with a non sticky texture, moisture content of 2.95% and 3.87%, encapsulation efficiency of 98.01% and 98.80%, an average particle size of 1.406 μm and 1.365 μm with a homogeneous distribution (PDI < 0.7), and the capacity to retain red color stability at pH 2.6–5. The microcapsules exhibited an amorphous structure characterized by a non-spherical and agglomerated form. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed that the anthocyanins were successfully trapped within the matrix through visible changes in the spectra. The microcapsules demonstrated free radical scavenging activity against DPPH, with IC50 values of 3.8087 and 3.0438 mg/mL. The addition of alginate or carboxymethyl cellulose to maltodextrin as a matrix not only resulted in powder with improved physicochemical properties but also enhanced encapsulation efficiency, suggesting their potential for stabilizing anthocyanins in functional food applications. Therefore, further research is needed to explore other binary matrix combinations, optimize the release behavior of anthocyanins, and evaluate their performance in real food or pharmaceutical applications

Assessment of Reactor Efficiency and Yield in Ethylenediamine Synthesis: A Case Study Utilizing Heterogeneous Catalysis

    Get PDF
This research focuses on enhancing the production of ethylenediamine (EDA) through the catalytic reaction of monoethanolamine (MEA) and ammonia (NH₃) in a heterogeneous plug flow reactor (PFR) using Aspen HYSYS simulation. The process involves a primary reaction converting MEA to EDA and a secondary reaction yielding diethylenetriamine (DETA) as a byproduct. Raney Nickel serves as the catalyst, while key operational parameters—temperature, pressure, and feed ratios—are systematically adjusted to evaluate their impact on yield, selectivity, and conversion efficiency. The study identified optimal conditions for achieving a maximum EDA yield of 94.4% at 150°C, 6000 kPa, and a 14:1 ammonia-to-MEA molar ratio, effectively minimizing byproduct formation. The findings underscore the effectiveness of Aspen HYSYS as a tool for simulating and optimizing complex chemical processes, providing critical insights into reactor design and operational control. Sensitivity analyses reveal increased pressure improves conversion rates, while lower temperatures enhance EDA selectivity over DETA formation. These insights advance the understanding of heterogeneous catalytic processes and offer strategies for improving EDA production efficiency on an industrial scale. In addition to promoting sustainable chemical manufacturing, the results offer practical recommendations for minimizing environmental impact and optimizing process efficiency. Future efforts should prioritize experimental validation, explore alternative catalysts, and investigate innovative reactor designs to further refine and scale up the production of EDA, aligning with industrial and environmental goals

    Get PDF
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents a significant global health challenge, contributing to rising healthcare expenditures and diminished productivity. Patients with COPD exhibit a higher incidence of coronary ischemia and other risk factors that elevate their suscep- tibility to complications associated with COVID-19. A robust immune system plays a crucial role in enhancing the body’s defenses, thereby mitigating the risk of infection and complications during the COVID-19 pandemic. The potential for utilizing natural therapies in the management of chronic diseases presents a unique opportunity for Indonesia, a tropical nation rich in diverse plant species that could serve as herbal remedies. Among these, red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) stands out as one of the most commonly utilized medicinal plants in Indonesia. No- tably, red ginger possesses superior anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties compared to other ginger varieties. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of red ginger not only aid in reducing the severity of COVID-19 but also contribute to the enhancement of lung function. The preparation of red ginger that has been used in the community is steeping. Therefore, red ginger has the potential to effectively reduce the risk of COVID-19 severity in COPD patients with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in reducing NF-κB and the effectiveness of im- proving lung function

Modulating dioxygenase and hydroperoxide isomerase activities in Burkholderia thailandensis lipoxygenase

    No full text
Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are enzymes that catalyze the regioselective dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), leading to the formation of fatty acid hydroperoxides (FAHPs). In addition to dioxygenase activity, some eukaryotic LOXs exhibit hydroperoxide isomerase (HPI) activity under specific conditions, resulting in the production of structurally diverse compounds such as epoxy alcohols and ketones. Until now, the presence of HPI activity in bacterial LOXs has not been documented. In this study, we investigated the HPI activity of LOX from Burkholderia thailandensis (Bt-LOX) and examined the effects of reaction conditions on its catalytic profile using three different C18 PUFA substrates. The results demonstrated that Bt-LOX exhibits significant HPI activity, especially at high enzyme concentrations, with ketone formation showing strong substrate dependence. Oxygen level was identified as a critical factor in directing the catalytic performance of Bt-LOX: HPI activity was inhibited under O₂-saturated conditions and enhanced under O₂-limited conditions. These findings establish Bt-LOX as the first bacterial LOX reported to exhibit pronounced HPI activity, and highlights its expanded potential for biocatalytic applications
