The enigma of fraud as a unique crime and its resonance for auditing research and practice: unlearned lessons of psychological pathways to fraud

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study aims to observe people’s decisions to commit fraud. This study is important in the current time because it provides insights into the development of fraudulent intentions within individuals. Design/methodology/approach – The information used in this study is derived from semi- structured interviews, conducted with 16 high-ranking officials who are employed in Indonesian local government positions. Findings – The study does not have strong evidence to support prior studies assuming that situational factors or social enablers have direct effects on fraud intentions. As suggested, individual factors which are related to moral reasoning (moral judgment and rationalisation) emerge as a consequence of social enablers. The significant role of that moral reasoning is to rationalise any fraud attempt as permissible conduct. As such, when an individual is capable of legitimising his/her fraud attempt into appropriate self-judgement, s/he is more likely to engage in fraudulent behaviours. Practical implications – This study offers practical prescriptions in guiding the management to develop strategies to curb fraudulent behaviours. The study suggests that moral cognitive reasoning is found to be a parameter of whether fraud is an acceptable option or not. So, an understanding of observers’ moral reasoning is helpful in predicting the likelihood of fraud within an organisation or in detecting it. Originality/value – This study provides a different perspective on the psychological pathway to fraud. It becomes a complement work for the fraud triangle to explain fraudulent behaviours. Specifically, it provides crucial insights into the underlying motivations that lead individuals to accept invitations to engage in fraudulent activities

Exploring music and visual art relationship through inquiry graphic: A semiotic analysis of visual art students’ work

    Get PDF
This research explores the relationship between music and visual art through the visual artworks of four Indonesian students. Focusing on eight paintings inspired by two types of instrumental music, the study employs a qualitative multi-method approach, including Inquiry Graphics and Peircean’s semiotic analysis, to understand the creative process. The study focuses on eight paintings inspired by two instrumental pieces: Yiruma’s “River Flows in You” and Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring.” Through free-painting experiments and semi-structured interviews, the research results in two key approaches to transduction (intersemiotic translation): one that reflects the formal qualities of music through visual elements and another that interprets the music through the lens of personal and cultural narratives. The result of this study underscores the value of multimodality in art education, showing how this approach enhances creativity and cognitive engagement across disciplines, including music, visual art, fashion, and product design

Scope Of E-Commerce Use, Innovation Capability, And Performance: Food Sector MSMEs In Indonesia

    Get PDF
This study aims to identify and evaluate the main factors that influence the performance of MSMEs in the food sector, focusing on two main variables: the scope of e-commerce use and the capacity for innovation. This research also uses Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis techniques using smart-PLS software. The results show that technological readiness and adoption costs influence the extent to which MSMEs can utilize e-commerce, while government support plays a role in facilitating a conducive environment for the adoption of this technology. On the other hand, the factors of autonomy, proactivity, and risk-taking courage increase the innovation capacity of MSMEs, allowing them to adapt, experiment, and create unique added value in the competitive market. An in- depth understanding of the interaction between these variables is expected to provide strategic insights to improve the competitiveness and performance of food MSMEs in the digital era. The managerial implications of this study, MSMEs in the food industry in Indonesia can improve their performance through effective utilization of e- commerce, development of innovation capabilities, and government support, which can help strengthen the competitiveness of MSMEs in the increasingly competitive global market

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyze the influence of toxic leadership on turnover intention, counterproductive work behavior (CWB), and job satisfaction in employees of PT. X Indonesia. The phenomenon of increasing employee resignation rates and indications of negative work behavior is an important background for this study. This study used a quantitative approach with a census method, involving 54 respondents from various levels of position. The data analysis technique was carried out using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with the help of SmartPLS 4.0 software. The results of the external model evaluation showed that all indicators used met the criteria for validity and reliability, with the value of loading factor, Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and composite reliability above the minimum threshold. Furthermore, the results of the inner model test showed that toxic leadership had a significant positive effect on turnover intention (? = 0.729), and CWB (? = 0.697), and had a significant negative effect on job satisfaction (? = -0.683), all with a p value of < 0.001. The R² value obtained indicates the model's predictive ability to be moderate for all endogenous variables. This study confirms that toxic leadership is a determinant factor that significantly decreases job satisfaction and increases employee exit intention and counterproductive behavior. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of early detection of toxic leadership practices and the development of a healthy organizational culture through managerial interventions and strategic HR policies
