The political economy of industrial policy in post-apartheid South Africa: a comparative case study analysis of Brazil and South Korea
South Africa is a country that has experienced premature deindustrialisation due to its inability to move out of middle-income status. The role of industrial policy in South Africa is pivotal to taking the country to greater economic heights and a higher-income status. South Africa’s historical context indicates that the country experienced its highest GDP growth rates during the apartheid economy. Since the demise of apartheid, the post-apartheid economy has experienced poverty and economic inequality that the South African government cannot eradicate. This thesis addresses the failure of South Africa to overcome premature deindustrialisation, and it discusses the state of the political economy and economic growth in a pre-apartheid and post-apartheid context. The thesis also addressed the significance of industrial policy through the establishment of the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP). The shortcomings and successes of IPAP form a critical part of the research and present an analysis of different economic sectors. The contentious relationship between feminist scholarship and university sexual violence policies: 1980-2021
This thesis tracks the historically contentious relationship between feminist scholarship and university sexual violence policies. It examines the rise of the managerial university in South Africa, and the overlapping development of sexual violence policies through feminist activism from the early 1990s. Through an examination of the sexual violence policies of the University of Cape Town, the University of the Witwatersrand, Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, and the University of the Western Cape, this thesis argues that these policies are aimed at ‘managing’ the process of reporting, rather than dismantling the broader structures – both within the university and society as a whole – that lead to and enable sexual violence. In this way, sexual violence policies are governed by a managerial discourse, limiting the possibility of addressing the dismantling of structures and discourses that perpetuate sexual violence, which, as I argue, is fundamentally opposed to the intellectual and political project of feminist scholarship from which these sexual violence policies initially emerged. However, this thesis also argues that feminist scholarship is not immune to the influence of managerialism, as discourses of efficiency and effectiveness have shaped Gender and Women’s Studies, where feminist scholarship is often located. International students’ experiences of othering in tertiary education in South Africa: an exploratory study
Despite rising cases of xenophobia in South Africa, international students remain committed to enrolling in its universities. Surprisingly, there is limited research looking into xenophobia in tertiary institutions. Therefore, the present study aimed to contribute to the scarcity of knowledge on the experiences of international students in South Africa. Thus, the study explored experiences of Othering among international students in tertiary education in South Africa and how they make sense of these experiences. Purposive and snowballing sampling techniques were employed to recruit international students (N=5) from Botswana, China, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Data was collected through semi-structured, face-to-face online interviews. Participants reported experiencing a variety of non-violent forms of Othering, such as feeling excluded due to the intentional use of local languages in both classroom and social settings; being rejected by local students who refused to work with them; and being accused of stealing opportunities from local students. At an institutional level, participants reported systemic Othering rooted in unsupportive policies and practices that led to a negative and oppressive environment. The findings support previous research studies that purport the Othering of international students in higher education in South Africa mainly manifests through non-violent and covert forms. Moreover, participants attributed Othering of immigrants to racism, a perceived lack of exposure to diversity among locals, perceived lack of compassion for immigrants, and the tendency to scapegoat immigrants for the lack of employment opportunities in the country. The findings underscore the intricate nature of Othering and the need for further research to gain a greater understanding of this complex phenomenon. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of implementing effective strategies of inclusion and integration of international students at these institutions of higher learning.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 202
Application of web design techniques and best practices in implementing web development, maintenance and enhancement of RUBi websites and web application systems
The popularity of the web has seen various fields, such as the sciences taking advantage of this resource to further their scientific endeavours. This has seen science groups moving into developing websites and web applications, and such a group is the Research Unit in Bioinformative (RUBi). With the use of the web, the development and maintenance of whatever web-related tools become inevitable, given the continuous changes in the web space. This continuous evolution of web development and maintenance will come with techniques, principles and standards which will not only enable faster development of web entities but also ensure that modern hardware, fulfilment of the requirements to use such hardware and modern concepts are incorporated into forming web tools that enable such progression. Furthermore, introducing the previously mentioned progress of the web becomes an essential part of its development and maintenance. This paper did implement the processes of progressing the web using the technique of documentation and version control systems. The web development for the COVIDRUG website was done for the Covidrug-Africa Consortium (COVIDRUG) using the Django webdevelopment framework. The RUBi website and the MDM-Task we band the Job Management System (JMS) web applications were maintained for the maintenance aspect. Archives brought value regarding the traceability it provides of the various web-related aspects. The development showed a website’s potential value, particularly for research groups. The maintenance carried out showed how different techniques and approaches could be used in different maintenance prospects to achieve set objectives. The enigmatic subterranean amphipod genus (sternophysinx: sternophysingidae): conservation and systematics
Sternophysingidae Holsinger, 1992 is a monotypic subterranean amphipod family endemic to Namibia and South Africa. It currently has eight described species under the genus Sternophysinx. The species in this family are considered narrow endemics, having only been identified using morphological characters. However, the apparent wide distribution of certain species, reported in several subterranean waters in different provinces, suggests that our current taxonomic understanding of these species needs to be completed, thus needing revision. Further, detailed knowledge of the distribution and phylogenetic relationship between species of this taxon still needs to be improved. This study aimed to use integrative taxonomy to analyse both morphology and molecular biology to study hidden diversity and to further our understanding of the distribution in this taxon. The available morphological keys were used to identify species, and 12S rRNA was also used to investigate the relationships of Sternophysinx species and delimit species boundaries. The study primarily aimed to use mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). However, due to technical issues such as getting the correct primers, this study's aims were altered, and 12S was used instead of CO1. However, the process of getting CO1 sequences is still ongoing, and the results will be made available elsewhere. The current study aimed to visit all the type localities of the seven species of Sternophysinx reported in South Africa, including all known localities in which these amphipods have been recorded in the past. Nevertheless, this study did not get samples from Nelspruit, De Hoop Nature Reserve, and Nash Nature Reserve, which cover type localities of S. travaleensis, Matlapitse and Chaos cave that harbours S. calceola. Instead, the current study added five new localities Graaff-Reinet, Beaufort West, Hogsback, Makhambathi Nature Reserve and Ntsikeni Nature Reserve, for the distribution, including two new provinces (i.e., Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal) that had records of this genus in the country. Three delimitation methods, Assemble Species by Automatic Partitioning (ASAP), Bayesian implementation of the Poison Tree Processor (bPTP) and Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), were used to identify cryptic species within Sternophysinx. Phylogenetic analyses and three delimitation methods (ASAP, bPTP and ABGD) revealed considerable hidden cryptic diversity within this Sternophysinx. Preliminary morphological examination revealed at least two species as undescribed from Bakwena and Sterkfontein caves, and several that were morphologically identified using the current taxonomic keys did not match with the molecular analysis. For example, S. basilobata from three different systems, Boesmansgat cave (Northern Cape), Beaufort West (Western Cape) and Potchefstroom (North West), was in genetically different putative species. The same is true for S. robertsi and S. alca in Ficus and Peppercorn cave in Limpopo. Overall, the results of the current study demonstrate the need for a comprehensive integrative taxonomic revision of Sternophysinx. These findings suggest that S. basilobata is a complex of distinct lineages and requires further study. On the other hand, species delimitation methods suggested that there are 12- 14 candidate species (Figure 2.5). Lastly, this study investigated the threat posed by the invasive koi fish introduced to an important cave, Boesmansgat cave in the Northern Cape, which is a type locality of two endemic species (S. megacheles and S. basilobata). Stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and gut content analyses of the fish were investigated to establish whether this invasive fish feed on these critical creatures, thus endangering their long-term survival. Stable isotope signatures and the stomach gut content proved to be helpful in determining the diet of the koi fish, revealing it to be an omnivorous feeder with high invertebrate preference, including amphipods. These results indicate that the introduction of koi fish in the Boesmansgat cave threatens the long-term sustainability of these amphipods and other invertebrate assemblages in this cave.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202
The activity and foraging patterns of the western rock elephant shrew (Elephantulus rupestris)
The increase, and prolonged periods, of high ambient temperatures are cause for concern for small mammals living in arid areas of Southern Africa. In this study, I aimed to determine the effect of high environmental temperatures on the activity, body temperature maintenance and foraging behaviour in a population of Western rock elephant shrew, Elephantulus rupestris, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. I found that E. rupestris maintained stable body temperatures (Tb = 37.31 °C ± 0.64) over a range of environmental temperatures (Tair = 5° to 33.9 °C), indicating their ability to remain normothermic during the heat of the day. Under cool, mild and hot air temperatures, E. rupestris were predominantly active in the morning and night, being the least active during midday. This shift in activity time, known as polyphasic activity, is common amongst Macroscelidea species and is a mechanism for escaping thermal extremes. To determine the effect of temperature on foraging behaviour, I ran giving-up density (GUD) experiments on E. rupestris under a range of environmental conditions. GUD experiments yielded no conclusive results as animals did not show a significant preference for foraging under certain thermal conditions, and rather foraged under a variety of air temperatures. Overall, E. rupestris showed risk adverse behaviour, trading-off thermoregulation with foraging and activity for self-preservation during hot periods of the day.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202
Quantifying the training demands of an amateur women’s Rugby union team using Global Positioning System
Rugby union is a dynamic sport that has grown to not only be played by men but by women too. The professionalisation of the sport that happened in 1995 developed the game immeasurably including the focus given to its scientific research. This is important as literature on the demands of the game has become vital in improving the performance of Rugby union players (Deutch et al., 1998; Kay and Gill, 2004; Kruger, 2012). Scientific evidence-based data on the physical and physiological demands is imperative in the planning and setting up of training regimes (Deutch et al., 1998; Kay and Gill, 2004; Kruger, 2012). Unfortunately, the growth in the participation of women’s Rugby union has not been matched with scientific evidence-based literature that seeks to improve the performance of this population of players. Therefore, due to the unavailability of match-play during the COVID-19 outbreak, this study aimed to quantify the physical and physiological demands of training sessions of amateur women’s Rugby union players from the Sarah Baartman District, South Africa using Global Positioning System (GPS). The training’ data collected was compared to previous literature, including studies that also focused on match-play. Furthermore, players were categorized into forwards and backs, allowing for the comparison between the two playing categories. An exploratory, descriptive, observational, and comparative research design was used for the current study. The physical and physiological demands of eighteen women Rugby union players (eight forwards and ten backs) aged between 18 – 36 years old were assessed during training (for a total of nine sessions). To inform the participants’ characteristics, the players’ demographic, and anthropometric characteristics (age, stature, and body mass) were obtained. Using GPS and Zephyr technology the players’ training physical (time spent in speed zones, maximum speed, total distance travelled, number of impacts in the various impact zones) and physiological (heart rate) demands were explored. Statistical analysis methods including descriptive, independent t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA tests were employed to analyse the data and evaluate the differences between forwards and backs. The mean age and stature for all players was 25,44±5,6 years and 1,60±0,06 m respectively, with no significant differences found between backs and forwards. With regards to body mass, forwards weighed 82,0±9,4 kg while backs weighed significantly lighter at 58,0±5,8 kg. Significant differences (p < 0,05) were found for all players in the time spent in speed zones and the number of impacts in impact zones. When all forwards’ and backs’ physical and physiological demands were compared the results showed no significant differences. The average time spent in all six speed zones combined was 11,41 and 11,62 mins for forwards and backs, respectively. The maximum speeds reached by forwards (21,35±5,72 km/h) and backs (22,85±3,88 km/h) were similar. All players combined travelled an average total distance of 2,14±0,76 km. The total number of impacts in all six impact zones, totalled 116 impacts for forwards and 97 for backs. Heart rate responses recorded for forwards and backs were 139±15 bpm and 134±13 bpm. Based on the findings of this study, the training intensity of amateur women’s Rugby union was lower than the demands experienced in the training and match-play of previous research. It was also observed that there was no specificity with regards to the training programs allocated between forwards and backs of this study. The Role of the courts in the interpretation and implementation of the Right to Basic Education in Section 29(1)(a) of the South African Constitution
The right to education in section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution was meant to signal a break between an education system divided along racial lines, and a new democratic education system based on equity, equality, and opportunity for all learners. In reality, the South African education system still remains deeply divided along racial lines, with poor, mostly black learners, being under-resourced by the state, while their richer, mostly white, counterparts are being taught in schools that have access to all the resources necessary to realise the right to basic education. As a result, the right to education in section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution has been heavily debated, and between 2010 and 2022, the South African courts have often been called on to interpret the right. In the process, a rich jurisprudence has developed on the core content of the right to basic education, with findings by the courts that the right includes an entitlement to a number of educational resources. These include access to school infrastructure, learner-teacher support materials, desks and chairs, scholar transport, teaching and non-teaching staff, and nutrition. This study examines the way South African courts, between 2010 and 2022, have interpreted and implemented the right to basic education to give effect to section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution. While South African courts have historically shied away from interpreting socio-economic rights to contain a minimum core content and have rather opted for a reasonableness approach, the same is not entirely true for section 29(1)(a). As stated above, courts have been willing to find that the right entails a minimum basket of goods and services without which the right cannot be realised. By examining some of the most important education rights cases during this period, the study proposes that there are five factors that have guided the courts’ interpretation of the right and has assisted in the courts finding that the right contains a minimum core content. These factors are the historical context of the right to basic education; the textual formulation of the right to basic education in section 29(1)(a) of the Constitution; the interrelatedness of the right to basic education and other rights within the Bill of Rights; subsidiary education policies, legislation, and regulations, and lastly, the role of international law. This study seeks to consider the extent to which each of these factors have played a role in courts’ interpretation of section 29(1)(a). Exploring how Grade 11 Chemistry teachers mediate learning of the topic redox reactions in their classrooms in Namibia
The Namibian Chemistry ordinary level syllabus requires learners to study the topic of redox reactions. This topic has proven to be one of the most difficult for Namibian learners as reflected by their poor responses to questions in the Grade 11 and 12 Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate ‘O’ examinations. Teaching abstract concepts such as redox reactions requires higher cognitive thinking skills and thus presents a challenge. Against this background, this study sought to explore how teachers mediate learning of redox reactions in their classrooms. The focus was on conceptual understanding through linking content to the context of the learners. The study was underpinned by an interpretivist paradigm, within which a qualitative case study approach was adopted. Two Grade 11 Chemistry teachers from the Ohangwena and Oshana regions in Namibia were the research participants. I used semi-structured interviews, lesson observations and stimulated recall interviews to collect data. I used Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge as a theoretical framework in this study and the data sets were analysed using the Topic-Specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge components. Qualitative data were analysed inductively-deductively. The study’s findings revealed that teachers used various mediation tools such as analogies and prior knowledge. The results further illuminated that teachers should develop strong subject content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge to have the best strategies in place to mediate learning of this topic.Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Secondary and Post-School Education, 202
