Towards an artificial intelligence-based agent for characterising the organisation of primes
Machine learning has experienced significant growth in recent decades, driven by advancements in computational power and data storage. One of the applications of machine learning is in the field of number theory. Prime numbers hold significant importance in mathematics and its applications, for example in cryptography, owing to their distinct properties. Therefore, it is crucial to efficiently obtain the complete list of primes below a given threshold, with low relatively computational cost. This study extensively explores a deterministic scheme, proposed by Hawing and Okouma (2016), that is centered around Consecutive Composite Odd Numbers, showing the link between these numbers and prime numbers by examining their internal structure. The main objective of this dissertation is to develop two main artificial intelligence agents capable of learning and recognizing patterns within a list of consecutive composite odd numbers. To achieve this, the mathematical foundations of the deterministic scheme are used to generate a dataset of consecutive composite odd numbers. This dataset is further transformed into a dataset of differences to simplify the prediction problem. A literature review is conducted which encompasses research from the domains of machine learning and deep learning. Two main machine learning algorithms are implemented along with their variations, Long Short-Term Memory Networks and Error Correction Neural Networks. These models are trained independently on two separate but related datasets, the dataset of consecutive composite odd numbers and the dataset of differences between those numbers. The evaluation of these models includes relevant metrics, for example, Root Mean Square Error, Mean Absolute Percentage Error, Theil U coefficient, and Directional Accuracy. Through a comparative analysis, the study identifies the top-performing 3 models, with a particular emphasis on accuracy and computational efficiency. The results indicate that the LSTM model, when trained on difference data and coupled with exponential smoothing, displays superior performance as the most accurate model overall. It achieves a RMSE of 0.08, which significantly outperforms the dataset’s standard deviation of 0.42. This model exceeds the performance of basic estimator models, implying that a data-driven approach utilizing machine learning techniques can provide valuable insights in the field of number theory. The second best model, the ECNN trained on difference data combined with exponential smoothing, achieves an RMSE of 0.28. Investigating changes in pineapple (Ananas comosus) cultivation in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, from 1984 to 2020
Land use and land cover change (LULCC) resulting from agricultural activities have significantly impacted landscape transformation and fragmentation. The Albany Thicket Biome in the Eastern Cape Province stands out for its exceptional vegetation diversity and remarkable rates of species endemism. However, the relationship between agricultural activities and the Albany Thicket Biome has not received sufficient attention in the literature, creating a significant gap in understanding the extent of landscape transformation and the vegetation's recovery rate. This study aims to address this gap by utilising remote sensing technologies to investigate the LULCC specifically caused by pineapple cultivation in the Lower Albany area between 1984 and 2020. Analysis, using remotely sensed imagery and spatial analytical tools, provide accurate identification of pineapple fields and enable monitoring of their effects on LULCC dynamics across a wide spatial and temporal scale. Complementary field assessments examined the impacts of pineapple cultivation on land use and cover. Twelve image classifiers were tested to identify the most appropriate technique for mapping pineapple fields, and the Supervised Pixel-based Support Vector Machine (SVM) image classifier was found to be the most suitable. Utilising Landsat 4, 5, 7, and 8 satellite imagery, 27 land cover maps were created, spanning the period from 1984 to 2020. Additionally, field verification was conducted at 59 randomly generated sites to validate the findings. Spatial analysis of the data revealed that the pineapple industry in the study area has expanded by 733 hectares since 1984. Significant land use changes were observed, including converting land to wildlife ranches, grazing areas, and alternative agricultural practices. The land cover analysis identified the emergence of pioneer species in former pineapple fields, suggesting the potential for Albany Thicket regrowth if appropriately managed. This research contributes to a better understanding of the impacts of pineapple cultivation on the Albany Thicket Biome and provides valuable insights for land use planning and monitoring efforts. Investigating playing-related musculoskeletal disorders in South African instrumental musicians
This study, one of the first studies in SA to investigate PRMD in a wideranging sample of instrumental musicians using a validated self-report tool, shows that PRMDs are highly prevalent among a range of SA musicians and have a considerably negative effect on musicians’ performance ability and quality of life. However, making inferences about most affected genre or instrumental group was challenging due to the small sample sizes in some categories. The results from this study confirm that the nature of PRMD development is indeed multi-factorial, with factors numerous individual and playing-related factors playing a role in the development of PRMDs in SA musicians. Better support and education on health promotion for musicians, including awareness of and prevention strategies for PRMDs in the SA context are needed which may reduce the prevalence of PRMDs.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Human Kinetics and Ergonomics, 202
Elucidation of the roles of the carbonic anhydrase enzymes, CanA & CanB, in the physiology of Mycobacterium smegmatis
The bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB) and one of the leading infectious causes of death globally. The success of Mtb as a pathogen depends on its ability to detect and respond to a variety of physical and chemical stresses it encounters during infection of its human host. These environmental stresses include shifts in temperature, oxygen concentration, osmolarity and nutrient availability. Mtb is, in addition, exposed to changes in pH and CO2 concentration in the intracellular and extracellular environments it inhabits, which the bacterium has to adapt to in order to ensure its growth, survival and/or persistence during infection. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are a widely distributed family of enzymes that catalyse the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide (CO2) to bicarbonate (HCO3−) in the reaction: CO2 + H2O ⇄ HCO3− + H+. In microbes, CA activity is important for the activity of enzymes involved in carbon fixation as well as for maintaining pH homeostasis. Mtb is known to express three CAs, encoded by the Rv3588c, Rv1284 and Rv3273 genes (canA, canB and canC, respectively). The role(s) of these CA enzymes in the physiology of Mtb and other mycobacterial species, such as Mycobacterium smegmatis (Msm), has not been elucidated to date. To gain insights into the function of the CanA and CanB enzymes in mycobacterial species, we generated both canA and canB knockdown (KD) and knockout (KO) mutants in the fast-growing mycobacterial species, Msm, and analysed their growth phenotypes under several growth conditions where CA activity is known to be required. Notably, Msm lacks the CanC homologue, which makes it an ideal surrogate to focus on CanA and CanB. The Msm canA KD mutant was found to display a growth defect following anhydrotetracycline (ATc)-mediated gene silencing at atmospheric (low) CO2 concentrations [~0.035% CO2 (v/v)]. The growth defect could be rescued by incubating cells at physiological (high) CO2 concentrations [~5% CO2 (v/v)] or by supplementing the growth media with either HCO3− or the metabolic end-products of certain HCO3−-dependent-carboxylase enzymes at low CO2 concentrations. The ability of these compounds to rescue the growth of the canA KD mutants was, however, dependent on the extent of ATc-mediated gene silencing, suggesting that the canA gene is required for Msm growth at both low and high CO2 concentrations. This was confirmed by our findings that canA could only be genetically inactivated when a second copy of the gene was provided on the chromosome in trans, regardless of the CO2 concentration used. In contrast to our observations for canA, no differences in the growth phenotypes of the Msm wild type (WT) and canB KD or knockout (KO) mutant strains were observed following silencing or inactivation of the canB gene at either low or high CO2 concentrations or different pH values. These observations suggest that, in contrast to canA, the canB gene is dispensable for the growth of Msm under standard laboratory growth conditions. The canB KO mutant strain, nevertheless, displayed a slight decrease in its ability to form biofilms when compared to the WT strain, which could be restored by genetic complementation. CanB activity may, therefore, be required to promote bacterial growth and/or survival under biofilm conditions where CO2 diffusion into cells is limited, a phenomenon that has recently been observed in other microbes. Instagram and male body image: an in-depth study of perceptions surrounding Instagram-related body ideals amongst gym-going, male students at Rhodes University.
Guided by the disciplinary power and social comparison theories, this study sought to explore the perceptions of Instagram-related male body ideals amongst young, gym-going men enrolled at Rhodes University. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted, and the responses suggested that Instagram use shaped young men’s body-related perceptions in a variety of complex ways. The findings suggested that Instagram exposed users to a lean and muscular body ideal and that perceptions of this ideal were shaped by factors such as Instagram’s positivity bias, the age of users, and the exposure to the idealised bodies of fitness influencers. Furthermore, perceptions of Instagram’s male body ideal were influenced by context. Black South Africans that attended majority white high schools were more likely to conform to the male body ideals associated with their school environment. In such instances, individuals rejected the body norms associated with their ethnic backgrounds in lieu of striving for a lean and muscular body. Additionally, perceptions of body dissatisfaction were evident in cases where upward social comparisons were made with unrealistic male body ideals. Conformity to Instagram’s male body ideal also suggested that male users were subjected to a coercive form of power that resulted in their active participation in the reproduction of male body ideals.Thesis (MSocSci) -- Faculty of Humanities, Sociology, 202
Systematic effects and mitigation strategies in observations of cosmic re-ionisation with the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array
The 21 cm transition from neutral Hydrogen promises to be the best observational probe of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR). It has driven the construction of the new generation of lowfrequency radio interferometric arrays, including the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA). The main difficulty in measuring the 21 cm signal is the presence of bright foregrounds that require very accurate interferometric calibration. However, the non-smooth instrumental response of the antenna as a result of mutual coupling complicates the calibration process by introducing non-smooth calibration errors. Additionally, incomplete sky models are typically used in calibration due to the limited depth and resolution of current source catalogues. Combined with the instrumental response, the use of incomplete sky models during calibration can result in non-smooth calibration errors. These, overall, impart spectral structure on smooth foregrounds, leading to foreground power leakage into the EoR window. In this thesis we explored the use of fringe rate filters (Parsons et al., 2016) as a mean to mitigate calibration errors resulting from the effects of mutual coupling and the use of an incomplete sky model during calibration. We found that the use of a simple notch filter mitigates calibration errors reducing the foreground power leakage into the EoR window by a factor of ∼ 102. Thyagarajan et al. (2018) proposed the use of closure phase quantities as a means to detect the 21 cm signal, which has the advantage of being independent (to first order) from calibration errors and, therefore, bypasses the need for accurate calibration. In this thesis, we explore the impact of primary beam patterns affected by mutual coupling on the closure phase. We found that primary beams affected by mutual coupling lead to a leakage of foreground power into the EoR window, which can be up to ∼ 104 times and is mainly caused by the unsmooth spectral structure primary of primary beam sidelobes affected by mutual coupling. This power leakage was confined to k < 0.3 pseudo h Mpc−1. Lastly, we also proposed and demonstrated an analysis technique that can be used to derive a flux scale correction in post-calibrated HERA data. We found that after applying flux scale correction to calibrated HERA data, the bandpass error reduces significantly, with an improvement of 6%. The derived flux scale correction was antenna-independent, and it can be applied to fix the overall visibility spectrum scale of H4C data post-calibration in a fashion similar to Jacobs et al. Violence against women who sell sex in eastern and southern Africa: a scoping review
Women who sell sex (WSS) are vulnerable to violence. We present a scoping review of the last decade of research on the prevalence and incidence of, factors associated with, and services regarding violence against WSS in Eastern and Southern African (ESA). A systematic search of various databases resulted in 20 papers being reviewed. Inclusion criteria, applied by the first two authors, were as follows: empirical papers, key research problem is violence against WSS, and conducted in ESA countries. The lifetime prevalence of violence revealed in the studies ranged from 21% to 82%. A pattern of generalized violence against WSS from paying clients, male partners, strangers, family members, friends/acquaintances, and the authorities emerged. Factors associated with violence included the context within which the sex work occurs, alcohol use, type of sex exchange interactions, and personal factors (low education, low income, marriage, youth, high client volume, time in sex work, forced sexual debut, and internalized sex work stigma). WSS seldom access services after violence. Evaluations of two programs, a woman-focused HIV intervention, and the Diagonal Interventions to Fast-Forward Reproductive Health project, showed improvements in gender-based violence services. Findings suggest that targeted programmes should be paired with improving general health services and focus on promoting collective agency among WSS

Human–crocodile interactions in the western Solomon Islands: the importance of local data for reducing attacks on people
Interactions between people and the saltwater crocodile Crocodylus porosus frequently occur on islands and in coastal regions. Saltwater crocodiles impact people's lives and livelihoods by attacking them, resulting in minor or serious injuries, and by interfering in people's foraging activities. Retaliation may include killing the crocodiles involved. To reduce such human–crocodile interactions, data about the occurrence of incidents are required. We present data on encounters with crocodiles and attacks on people in the Roviana Lagoon, Solomon Islands. Data includes time of incident, gender, age and activity of the victim, water conditions and what happened to the crocodile after the incident. We used a questionnaire to capture the details of incidents that occurred during 2000–2020 in the villages of Dunde, Baraulu, Nusa Hope and Kozou. Most incidents were in the evening, mostly involving women, and most victims were aged 20–39 years or ≥ 60 years. In all cases people were attacked while gleaning for shellfish in the mangroves. Attacks occurred irrespective of whether the water was clear or murky, and in all cases the crocodiles were not killed. Such site-specific data will facilitate the formulation of strategies for reducing negative interactions between people and crocodiles in this particular location. Although the saltwater crocodile is categorized as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, research such as this provides data that can be used for promoting coexistence with and conservation of this species
