Mediating learning of nutrition through using traditional food processing and preservation to grade 6 rural school learners
Rural learners, especially those in the school where I teach, seem to grasp science in a disconnected manner, and hence struggle to understand it. This concern aligns with the findings of the Trends of International Mathematics and Science Studies, which notes poor performance in science among learners in South Africa. When examining these challenges, learners appear to inhabit a realm divided by a river, struggling to bridge the gap between what they learn at home and what is taught at school. Against this context, this research aimed to mediate the learning of nutrition for Grade 6 rural school learners by integrating traditional ways of food processing and preservation. The interpretivist and Indigenous research paradigms underpin the research. I used the Ubuntu perspective within the Indigenous research paradigm, which emphasises respect and humble togetherness. This qualitative case study took place at a rural school in the OR Tambo Coastal district in the Eastern Cape. It involved 14 Grade 6 Natural Sciences and Technology learners, a critical friend, and two Indigenous Knowledge Custodians. Various methods were used to collect data, including group activities by learners, participatory and lesson observation, focus group interviews (sharing circles), and learners’ journal reflections. The findings of the study revealed the significance of integrating Indigenous Knowledge with modern scientific principles, engaging in experiential and hands-on learning activities, involving Indigenous Knowledge Custodians, and using visual learning aids to enhance learners’ engagement and sense-making of nutrition. Exploring how visual models can be used in teaching mathematics for growing a productive disposition in Grade 9 learners
The Namibian Curriculum for Basic Education states clearly that Indigenous Knowledge (IK) should be integrated into science teaching. However, the irony is that it does not give clear pedagogical guidelines on how it should be integrated. The implication is that the curriculum assumes that all teachers are aware of how to integrate IK into their teaching. This assumption has therefore led to little or no integration of IK in many classrooms in Namibia, something which could be in part a contributing factor to poor learners’ academic performance in science subjects and Agricultural Science in particular. This tension in the curriculum plus the apparent gap in the literature regarding the integration of IK has triggered my interest to conduct this interventionist qualitative case study. Essentially, this study aimed to explore affordances and/or hindrances when using the indigenous technology of organic crop farming to mediate learning in Grade 12 Agricultural Science classes in peri-urban schools in the Oshana region in Namibia. The study was underpinned by the interpretivist and Ubuntu paradigms. Vygotsky’s (1978) socio-cultural theory and Shulman’s (1986) pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) framework were used as lenses to analyse my data. Within PCK, I also used Mavhunga and Rollnick’s (2013) Topic-Specific PCK as an analytical framework. The findings of the study revealed that the integration of Indigenous knowledge in Agricultural Science education has great potential in improving both the teaching and learnng of science. It also revealed that the Agricultural Science teachers were positive towards the integration of IK in their lessons. However, they conceded that they lacked pedagogical insights on how to integrate IK as they were never trained on how to integrate it. As a result, they found the presentations by the Indigenous Knowledge Custodians (IKCs) informative and shed light on how they could integrate IK during teaching and learning. That is, they became cultural knowledge brokers making science relevant and accessible to their learners. The impact of international investment agreements on FDI in developing countries and the implications for development policy
This study investigates the impact of international investment agreements, specifically bilateral investment treaties (BITs), on inward Foreign direct investment (FDI) in recipient developing countries and the implications of such agreements for development policy. The study estimates a log-linear gravity model based on a unique dataset created to investigate whether the presence of BITs has a positive impact on inward FDI stock in 36 developing countries. The selection of countries attempts to capture a set of bilateral relationships that accounts for a significant proportion of inward FDI in developing countries. To test the hypothesis that signing BITs has a positive effect on inward FDI in developing countries it was necessary that all recipient countries be developing economies. However, investor countries are both developed and developing economies. Therefore, each bilateral FDI relationship is either between a developing recipient and developed investor country or between a developing recipient and developing investor country. For each recipient country, FDI stock data from investor countries for 2019 was obtained from the ITC’s Investment Map database (ITC, 2022). This yielded 1009 bilateral FDI relationships (observations for the dependent variable) after removing pairs for which certain explanatory variable data was not available. For the gravity model, GDP data was collected from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators Database (World Bank, 2023a), while the other traditional gravity variables were collected from the CEPII GeoDist Database (CEPII, 2011). Alongside the gravity variables, the study employs three additional control variables (two macroeconomic and one institutional) in certain specifications of the basic model, namely the exchange rate, inflation rate and an index of political stability. Data for the three additional variables was sourced from the IMF’s World Economic Outlook Database (IMF, 2022) for the macroeconomic variables and the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators Database (World Bank, 2023b) in the case of the political stability index. To examine the key question of the impact of BITs on bilateral FDI, a number of BITs dummy variables are created to investigate, firstly, whether having signed a BIT impacts on FDI in developing countries and, secondly, whether having a BIT in force significantly impacts on FDI in developing countries. Thereafter, in each case, dummy variables are created to investigate whether there is a significant difference between the impact on FDI of having a BIT signed or in force between a developed and developing country specifically, and having a BIT signed or in force between two developing countries. In order to examine the implications for development policy, the thesis analyses case studies of selected BITs between developed and developing economies, as well as those between developing economies. The texts of the BIT documents were obtained from the UNCTAD Investment Policy Hub Database (UNCTAD, 2023b). The results of the study reveal that, on average, signing and/or having a BIT in force has a significant positive impact on the inward FDI stock of the recipient developing country from the outward investor country. This positive impact is found to be even stronger in the case of BITs between developed and developing countries. However, there is no significant impact on inward FDI for BITs signed between two developing countries. The study finds that GDP of the recipient and investor country, existence of a common official language and the distance between countries all have a significant impact on FDI in the recipient developing country, and are signed as expected in the gravity literature. The existence of a common border is weakly significant in some specifications of the basic model and not significant in others. The additional control variables are all significant and signed as expected in the literature. The study contributes to the literature by distinguishing, not only between the impact of BITs signed versus BITs in force on inward FDI in developing countries, but also by distinguishing between the impact of BITs on FDI when the partners are developed and developing countries versus when both partners are developing countries. The study also finds that, in an effort to attract FDI, developing countries have signed BITs which carry obligations that extend significant protection measures to foreign investors. However, such protections are offered at the expense of sovereign interests. The study finds that this has served to significantly reduce the policy space available for developing countries to attract FDI that is aligned to their sustainable development needs. The limitations of the study are as follows. The gravity specification is cross-sectional, and a panel data approach could be recommended for future work. Furthermore, the traditional OLS gravity specification has a number of disadvantages and different types of estimator could be used in future work, software permitting. In addition, the impact on FDI of the termination of BITs could be investigated, as sufficient data is becoming available for such an approach. Understanding resource use of an invasive species: Diet of the common warthog in Eastern Cape succulent thicket
Understanding resource use of invasive species provides insights for predicting and mitigating their impacts on biodiversity. We explored the predictability of diet of the invasive common warthog by describing and comparing the diet of warthog populations from two semi-arid, invaded sites, Addo Elephant National Park (AMC), and Great Fish River Nature Reserve (GFRNR), Eastern Cape, South Africa. These sites are both dominated by the Subtropical Thicket biome, but differ in vegetation type. We used forage availability to estimate diet preferences at AMC. We predicted that warthog would consume grass in invaded landscapes. Additionally, we predicted that the diet at one invaded site would predict this at another invaded site. As predicted, warthog mainly consumed grass at both sites (AMC – 87.4%, GFRNR – 88.5%), eating few woody plants, succulents, and forbs. Cynodon dactylon was the most consumed species in AMC, in GFRNR this was Eragrostis curvula and Cymbopogon pospichilii. Our ability to predict the diet between sites was constrained by variation in the plant species consumed. We found strong relationships between the consumption of preferred plant species at AMC and their consumption at GFRNR. We show that warthogs are specialised grazers outside their native range and thus can be expected to impact grass communities in invaded areas, especially preferred grass species. Thus, conservation managers need to monitor grasses in areas invaded by warthog to better detect and manage their impacts

Wild edible plants in rural home gardens: livelihoods, perceptions, economic value & traditional knowledge
The prevalence of hunger and malnutrition has been steadily increasing in the world over the past decades. The rate of food insecurity was further exacerbated by the COVID 19 pandemic which plunged millions more into hunger as a result of a recovering economy and high food prices. These challenges are mostly experienced in Africa and are estimated to worsen in this region already affected by conflict, poor healthcare, and natural disasters such as floods and droughts. The green revolution in the 1960’s elevated agricultural production to play a pivotal role in the provision of food. However, production focused mainly on the cultivation of staple crops such as rice, wheat, and maize. The reliance on these crops has contributed to the lack of micronutrient intake and consumption of non-diverse diets. Wild edible plants (WEPs) which previously formed a significant part of indigenous people’s diet, have been regarded as an important food source crucial for the alleviation of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Despite their nutritional qualities, they are often ignored, overlooked, and undermined by agricultural programmes and food security interventions. Additionally, WEPs are largely absent in modern diets, they are often surrounded by negative perceptions, they are economically undervalued, and the indigenous knowledge of these species is under threat. As a result, this study regards WEPs as important resources that can significantly contribute to improved livelihood outcomes such as income, food security and good health. Using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, this study evaluated the contribution of WEPs to sustaining livelihoods, providing economic value, and examined how WEPs are perceived as well as the relationship between their knowledge and consumption in rural areas. This study was conducted in rural villages that are under the jurisdiction of the Moletjie and Matlala tribal authorities in the Polokwane and Aganang local municipalities, South Africa. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed for data collection. A total of 356 participants were interviewed for this study. Firstly, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 elderly participants (Chapter 2). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 120 participants stratified by age, gender, and income groups (Chapter 3). A total of 96 household surveys were conducted in selected villages, this was complemented by direct observations and field surveys of the home gardens (Chapter 4). Questionnaires and freelists were administered to a total of 120 participants also stratified by age, gender, and income groups to collect data on indigenous knowledge of WEPs (Chapter 5). Thematic analysis were performed for interview data (Chapter 2) and data were summarised, descriptive statistics, chi square tests (Chapter 3), Kruskal-Wallis tests (Chapter 4), ANOVA tests and correlation tests (Chapter 5) were performed using SPSS software. The findings show that there has been a major nutrition transition characterised by changed meal composition, patterns, and frequency relating to the consumption of WEPs. The changes can be attributed to increasing western influence characterised by rising urbanisation, western lifestyle of church, school, and employment in an income-based economy dependent on retail stores to fulfil their daily dietary needs. Despite this, WEPs are still valuable to rural people, this is indicated by the fact that traditional foods are made optional at some modern and traditional celebrations. Overall, most of perceptions (65.6%) regarding the consumption of WEPs were positive. The overwhelming majority of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that preparations from the local WEPs are relatively more tasty (98.3%), healthy (96.6%), nutritious (86.7%), and better represent the traditional foods (94.1%). Additionally, participants perceived WEPs to have health benefits in that they have medicinal properties to help prevent diseases, are a good source of energy, highly nutritious and they give strength. Despite these benefits and positive perceptions, most participants expressed doubt over the commercial success of WEPs if they were to compete with cultivated crops in the market. As a result, they perceive the future of WEPs to be bleak as 95% of participants believe that their consumption is in decline. This can be largely attributed to deagrarianisation, climate change, and preference of cultivated foods by the youth. The study also showed that a diversity fruits and vegetables are available in rural home gardens, with cultivated fruits grown in abundance and WEPs available in almost all households (98%). WEPs represented 34% of the total estimated economic value of plants available in rural home gardens. Most of the home gardens produce food to supplement household food supply with only a few households engaged in trading. The trading of WEPs was recorded in 9% of the home gardens while 16% sold cultivated fruits and/or vegetables. Challenges such as lack of water and poor rainfall are shocks which affect the availability, richness, and abundance of home garden produce. WEPs are generally well known in rural areas as participants listed an average of 8.4±2.4 species. There was a significant statistical difference between the number of species listed by age group (p = 0.009) with the elderly listing a higher average number of species (9.3±2.6) compared to adults (8.1±2.5) and the youth (7.8±1.7). Vangueria infausta, Sclerocarya caffra, Ximenia caffra, Amaranthus retroflexus L. retroflexus, Citrullus lanatus,and Cleome gynadra where among the top listed species. There was also a significant positive correlation between the number of listed fruits with number of listed vegetables. The study also found a positive correlation between knowledge of WEPs and consumption. Most of the knowledge about WEPs was learned from a family member (89%), own observation (86%), a village elder (75%). Political competition and local government debt: implications for human development: A case study of Eastern Cape municipalities
South African Municipalities are currently in a precarious financial situation. The financial distress has intensified so much that local governments are on the brink of collapse. Municipalities in South Africa currently owe over 35.5 billion rands. Reports from the Auditor-General of South Africa portrayed a grim picture of the state of financial affairs in municipalities; only 33 municipalities out of 278 had received a clean audit, with over 30 billion rands in expenditure declared irregular. The report further revealed that there were numerous cases of non-compliance with key legislation in municipalities. The poor financial audits across the country have stressed the severe lack of accountability, government issues and political turmoil. Due to this state of affairs, municipalities cannot deliver services such as sanitation, electricity, and water. As a result, many service delivery protests have occurred over the years. Political factors have been highlighted as the leading cause of these local government woes. This study aims to investigate the relationship between political competition and local government debt and its effect on human development in Eastern Cape municipalities. The study used a panel data set for 32 municipalities and electoral data from 2009 to 2016. The panel vector autoregression model, generalized least squares, fixed and random effects methods were used to investigate the relationship between political competition and local government debt. The study found a positive unidirectional relationship between political competition and local debt. This was found using the normalized Herfindahl index, debt to asset, tress index, human development index, population and poverty variables. Moreover, estimated results showed that local governments in the eastern cape were characterised by a political monopoly that, in turn, increased local government debt through growth-hindering policies adopted by political leaders. Co-occurrence of Sympatric Poroderma Species
Species exploiting similar ecological niches are expected to adapt their behaviour, which can either promote or hinder coexistence. This study examined the ecological (dis)similarity between the endemic Poroderma africanum (pyjama catshark) and Poroderma pantherinum (leopard catshark) in Mossel Bay, South Africa. The co-occurrence of these species was examined along the ecological axes of time, trophic position and space, between October 2015 and April 2018, through the use of Baited Remote Underwater Videos (BRUV), gastric lavage, and acoustic telemetry. Through the deployment of 197 BRUVs, P. africanum showed a seasonal, higher Relative Abundance (RA = 0.52), occurring more frequently during winter months, while showing an overall decline in RA over the course of the study period. Poroderma pantherinum on the other hand, showed a lower, unseasonal RA (0.20), remaining relatively stable throughout the study period. The BRUV deployments indicated that the two species showed a positive co-occurrence with one other, being sighted in BRUV deployments more frequently together as opposed to in isolation/at random. Acoustic telemetry indicated that the two species were active during different diel periods, influenced by a complex combination of tidal and diel rhythms, while P. pantherinum showed a higher residency compared to P. africanum (P. pantherinum: Continuous Residency Time (CRT)24 = 3.32 days (mean), 95% CI: 2.53–4.11 days; P. africanum: CRT24 = 2.01 days, 95% CI: 1.66–2.36 days). While the two species are sympatric in nature, and have an overlapping, endemic, distribution, acoustic telemetry indicated that 1 ABSTRACT P. africanum showed higher degrees of movement throughout the acoustic receiver array (P. africanum: edge density (ED) = 0.25; P. pantherinum: ED = 0.12); however, certain areas of the bay showed to be of high importance for both species. Both species revealed high levels of intra- and inter-specific variation in both residency and movement behaviour. Gastric lavage indicated partially overlapping trophic niches, between the two Poroderma spp. Poroderma africanum had a generalist diet, dominated by teleosts (Index of Relative Importance (IRI)% = 22.69), octopus (IRI% = 11.48) and discarded bait (IRI% = 64.54), while P. pantherinum showed indications of being a specialist predator, with a diet dominated by cephalopods (IRI% = 83.68). The two Poroderma spp. showed a partially overlapping, but separate trophic niches, while displaying spatial dissimilarity in diet. The study suggests that the two species are able to coexist within the same geographical area through niche differentiation across trophic and temporal ecological axes, with varying spatial use. The intra- and inter-specific differences between the two species may complicate elasmobranch management efforts for these co-occurring endemic catsharks, and as such, efforts should follow either an individual species approach, which is often not feasible, or an ecosystem-based approach, as opposed to considering the genus as a whole.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 202
Dancing with(in) possibilities: emerging public and convivial pedagogies for ecological citizenship
This research project explores ways in which ecological citizenship can be stimulated through collaborative public pedagogy and transgressive learning (t-learning) processes. This research identifies ‘places’ of innovation to cover sections that would usually be described in terms of ‘problem statement’, ‘research focus’, ‘intended outcomes / main contribution’ and ‘theory and methodology’. The Place of Worry is identified through the triple C Crisis (Covid, Capitalism and Climate-Change) which reveal the disconnect to the diverse ecologies (both social and natural) that sustain us. The Place of Possibility demonstrates that through ecological citizenship we can begin to absent absences (De Sousa Santos, 2016) and transform into an embodied response to the triple C crisis. The Place of Emergence transforms these possibilities into practice by demonstrating the place between the worry and the possibility allows for an emergence of a new kind of solution, referred to as the third space within this thesis. The Place of Process delves into the t-learning stories that emerged through research creation and works with iterative feedback and cycles of creation. The unfolding of this t-learning project is guided by the use of metaphor and symbolism as a figuration of macro- and microscopic interactions within these learning fields/ecosystems. Symbolic figuration and speculative metaphor are valuable in this thesis and in my own collaborative meaning-making endeavour as they offer translation protocols for when language fails to embody, the rich embodied experience of this form of learning. The embodiment of this work will help to create restorative care practices through transgressive learning (Lotz-Sisitka et al., 2016) and research creation (Manning, 2016). The study has a particular focus on the emergence of identities and onto-epistemological orientation within the social learning journey towards ecological citizenship and the various ways in which they can be embodied to enable public pedagogy.Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Secondary and Post School Education, 202
