    Post-Growth and the Lack of Diversity in the Scenario Framework

    Scenarios and pathways, as defined and used in the “SSP-RCP scenario framework”, are key in last decade’s climate change research and in the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In this framework, Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) consist of a limited set of alternative socioeconomic futures, that are both represented in short qualitative narratives and with quantitative projections of key drivers. One important use of the computationally derived SSP-scenarios is to do mitigation analysis and present a “manageable” set of options to decision-makers. However, all SSPs and derivatively SSP-scenarios in this framework assume a globally growing economy into 2100. This, in practice, amounts to a value-laden restriction of the space of solutions to be presented to decision-makers, falling short of IPCC’s general mandate of being “policy-relevant and yet policy-neutral, never policy-prescriptive”. Yet, the Global Economic Growth Assumption (GEGA) could be challenged and in practice is challenged by post-growth scholars. However, for post-growth mitigation scenarios to be constructed, explored, and assessed more systematically, they need to be fully integrated into the scenario framework. This is not done yet. I argue, from a philosophy of value-laden science perspective, that this should be done and propose two ways. This integration follows from and satisfies a diversity criterion, which derivatively enhances the framework’s “objectivity” and the IPCC’s policy-neutrality

    Relational Ontology as a Bridge Between Realism and Empiricism in Scientific Explanation

    This paper proposes that relational ontology, which defines existence through relations, serves as a bridge between scientific realism and empiricism by offering a structural criterion for scientific explanation. Through case studies in quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, we illustrate how relationality grounds scientific theories in empirical interactions while supporting realist commitments to unobservable structures. Engaging with philosophy of science debates—realism, reductionism, and demarcation—and drawing on thinkers such as Lakatos, Kuhn, Cartwright, van Fraassen, and contemporary authors like Ladyman and Chakravartty, this work examines the explanatory limits of relational ontology in addressing consciousness and contrasts scientific explanations with non-scientific accounts. Its original contribution lies in demonstrating how relational ontology unifies these perspectives through a rigorous structural criterion, advancing our understanding of scientific explanation within the philosophy of science

    This paper proposes a dynamic temporal logic that is appropriate for modeling the dynamics of scientific knowledge (especially in historical sciences, such as Archaeology, Paleontology and Geology). For this formalization of historical knowledge, the work is divided into two topics: firstly, we define a temporal branching structure and define the terms for application in Philosophy of Science; Finally, we define a logical system that consists of a variation of Public Announcement Logic in terms of temporal logic, with appropriate rules in a tableaux method

    The Evolution of Scientific Credit: When Authorship Norms Impede Collaboration

    Scientific authorship norms vary dramatically across disciplines, from contribution-sensitive systems where first author is the greatest contributor and subsequent author order reflects relative input, to contribution-insensitive conventions like alphabetical ordering or senior-author-last. We develop evolutionary game-theoretic models to examine both how these divergent norms emerge and their subsequent effects on collaborative behavior. Our first model reveals that contribution-insensitive norms evolve when researchers who sacrifice positional advantage face the strongest adaptive pressure -- for example senior authors managing larger collaboration portfolios or bearing heavier reputational stakes. This "Red King" dynamic potentially explains why fields in which senior researchers command large labs, major grants, and extensive collaboration portfolios may paradoxically evolve conventions that favour junior-author positioning. Our second model demonstrates that established norms influence researchers' willingness to collaborate, with contribution-sensitive norms consistently outperforming insensitive alternatives in fostering successful partnerships. Contribution-insensitive norms create systematic coordination failures through two mechanisms: "main contributor resentment" when exceptional work goes unrecognized, and "second contributor resentment" when comparable efforts receive unequal credit. These findings suggest that widely adopted practices like senior-last positioning and alphabetical ordering may function as institutional frictions that impede valuable scientific collaborations rather than neutral organizational conventions, potentially reducing overall scientific productivity across affected disciplines

    Productive Intuition of an Organism's Vital Force in Goethe and Steiner - preprint

    This paper investigates the epistemological problem of understanding the formative principles of living organisms, proposing that such knowledge requires a non-discursive mode of cognition. Revisiting the philosophies of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Rudolf Steiner, the study explores an alternative method of understanding life—not through mechanistic models or speculative vitalism, but through what is termed “intellectual intuition.” It is demonstrated how Goethe’s concept of the Urpflanze and Steiner’s interpretation enable a mental reconstruction of organic development as a lawful, self-generating process. Drawing parallels with Fichte’s notion of self-awareness through productive cognition, the paper argues that organisms can be known through a productive act of thinking in which the generative principle of life is intellectually intuited. This yields a scientifically grounded, though non-empirical, mode of “empirical vitalism,” in which the organism’s entelechy—its vital laws and force—can be observed through active, intuitive cognition. The study suggests that such a methodology could offer a viable epistemic and metaphysical framework to overcome the limitations of both reductionist biology and speculative vitalism

    Quantum Foundations of Consciousness: A Reformulated Framework

    This paper proposes a theory-neutral formal framework designed to accommodate data that implicates consciousness in anomalous observer-linked phenomena, including structured accounts sometimes interpreted as involving alleged non-human intelligence. Motivated by growing empirical reports in which observer phenomenology appears coupled to system behavior, the paper introduces an explanatory workspace that expands the standard quantum state space to include a phenomenal dimension. Specifically, it augments the conventional Hilbert space Hphysical with an orthogonal tensor factor Hphenomenal, allowing conscious states to be structurally represented without reducing them to conventional observables. The goal is not to offer a reductive theory of consciousness, but to supply a lawful representational space into which empirically grounded anomalies—such as psi effects, attentional modulation, or UAP-linked phenomenology—might coherently fit. The framework is grounded in an epistemic tradition articulated by Newton, Eddington, Russell, and Chomsky, all of whom emphasize the distinction between the structural apparatus of science and its ontological reach. It does not seek to redefine physics, but to expand its structural vocabulary—offering a formal arena in which observer-linked anomalies may become empirically visible and testable

    Still no peace on the lattice

    The idea of using lattice methods to provide a mathematically well-defined formulation of realistic effective quantum field theories (QFTs) and clarify their physical content has gained traction in the last decades. In this paper, I argue that this strategy faces a two-sided obstacle: realistic lattice QFTs are (i) too different from their effective continuum counterparts even at low energies to serve as their foundational proxies and (ii) far from reproducing all of their empirical and explanatory successes to replace them altogether. I briefly conclude with some lessons for the foundations of QFT

    The Philosophy and Physics of Duality

    This monograph discusses dualities in physics: what dualities are, their main examples—from quantum mechanics and electrodynamics to statistical mechanics, quantum field theory and string theory—and the philosophical questions they raise. Part I first conceptualises dualities and discusses their main roles and themes, including how they are related to familiar notions like symmetry and interpretation. It also discusses the main simple examples of dualities: position-momentum, wave-particle, electric-magnetic, and Kramers-Wannier dualities. Part II discusses advanced examples and their inter-relations: particle-soliton dualities, electric-magnetic dualities in quantum field theories, dualities in string theory, and gauge-gravity duality. This Part ends with discussions of the hole argument, and how string theory counts the microstates of a black hole. Part III is an in-depth discussion of general philosophical issues on which dualities bear: theoretical equivalence (two theories 'saying the same thing, in different words'), scientific realism and the under-determination of theories by data, theory succession and the M-theory programme, explanation, and scientific understanding. It proposes a view of scientific theories that it dubs 'the geometric view of theories'. The book's treatment of the examples is at the advanced undergraduate and graduate level, starting from elementary and progressing to more advanced examples. The discussions of philosophical topics, such as referential semantics, theoretical equivalence, scientific realism and scientific understanding, are both self-contained and in-depth. Thus the book is aimed at students and researchers with an interest in the physical examples and philosophical questions about dualities, and also in how physics and philosophy can fruitfully interact with each other

    The Epochetic Analysis of Causation Compared to Counterfactual Accounts

    This chapter compares Andreas and Günther's (forthcoming) epochetic analysis of actual causation to the currently popular counterfactual accounts. The primary focus will be on the shortcomings of the counterfactual approach to causation. But we will also explain the motivation behind counterfactual accounts and how the counterfactual approach has successively moved away from its core idea in response to recalcitrant counterexamples. The upshot is that our epochetic analysis tallies better with our causal judgments than the counterfactual accounts

    The Individualized Niche: A Case Study in Scientific Conceptual Change

    We explore the causes and outcomes of scientific conceptual change using a case study of the development of the individualized niche concept. We outline a framework for characterizing conceptual change that distinguishes between epistemically adaptive and neutral processes and outcomes of conceptual change. We then apply this framework in tracing how the individualized niche concept arose historically out of population niche thinking and how it exhibits plurality within a contemporary biological research program. While the individualized niche concept was developed adaptively to suit new research goals and empirical findings, some of its pluralistic aspects in contemporary research may have arisen neutrally, that is for non-epistemic reasons. We suggest reasons for thinking that this plurality is unproblematic and may become useful, e.g., when it allows for the concept to be applied across differing research contexts
