Preface
This “White Book” comes from an idea of Angela Bracco, supported by the Sogin’s Board of Commissioners and collects all the interventions delivered during the international workshop “Research plans for the Technology Park annexed to the Italian National near-surface Repository for radioactive waste”
Tailored materials for radioactive waste disposal
This paper reports on the developments for advanced fuel cycles to fully utilize resource materials (e.g., uranium) from used nuclear fuel and decrease the amount and toxicity of waste requiring geological disposal by the U.S. Department of Energy
Characterization of nuclear material and radioactive waste at SRS
The Savannah River National Laboratory’s Nuclear Measurements Group (NMG) provides both radiochemical analyses and non-destructive assay of nuclear material to the ongoing processes at the Savannah River Site (SRS) as well as to other DOE facilities. The radioanalytical capability of the group serves to complement the more-limited services provided by the Savannah River Site production analytical laboratories as well as offsite commercial laboratories. The amounts of radioactivity in sample matrices vary widely, ranging from environmental levels to those with doses high enough to require remote handling and manipulation. For items too large or too inconvenient to transport to the laboratory for analysis,
non-destructive assay (NDA) can be performed in-situ. The group also conducts on-site neutron and gamma assays. The group provides technical support for nondestructive gamma, neutron, and calorimetry assay systems installed in various Site facilities. The NMG supports nuclear measurement technology development, collaborating with numerous universities, to address SRS needs as well as to address
nuclear measurement shortfalls across the complex. An overview of past and present SRS nuclear processes, including the extensive radiological waste cleanup efforts underway, are described with a focus on how the NMG’s operations are currently intertwined with these operations
Cross-correlation of the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background with the Cosmic Microwave Background
This article is based on the talk I delivered in “Sezione 3: Astrofisica” of the 108th National Congress of the Italian Physical Society on 12th September 2022. The session was dedicated to Gravitational Waves (GW) and Cosmology. Since the first detection by LIGO/Virgo, GW physics has been very promising, providing a new complementary way to study and understand our Universe. In this work I focused on the analysis and characterization of the Astrophysical Gravitational Wave Background (AGWB) anisotropies, generated at the production and during the propagation of the signal. The physics behind them shows many analogies with the cosmic microwave background ones; thus I focus on the extent they can be used to constrain cosmology, by means of the cross-correlation between the two signals. More specifically, I aim to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity studying
its impact on the bias of astrophysical sources of GW. For the purpose, I developed a code to model the astrophysical sources and I modified the code CLASS, implementing the AGWB anisotropies
Machine learning-based metabolic imaging: A bridge between in vitro models and clinical applications
A multiparametric approach is necessary to understand the intricate processes driving cellular physiological and pathological states. Current developments in the field of optical microscopy offer a deeper understanding in the
evaluation of minute molecular changes, together with an even greater volume of biological data. Among these developments is functional metabolic imaging, a field
that integrates molecular biology and in vivo imaging and sheds light on a number of metabolic processes that are crucial to cell survival. A few inherent limitations of
the frequently used methods can also be solved by using probes that modify the picture in response to chemical changes occurring in the region of interest. To decode
the extensive useful biological material that is concealed in pictures, more potent image analysis techniques are needed in addition to advancements in the image cap-
ture process. Many machine learning (ML)-based techniques have recently been developed to achieve this goal. After providing a brief overview of metabolic and multiparametric imaging and the ML-based approaches that we are interested in, I will present different applications that I have developed to enable a more in-depth investigation of lipid turnover and membrane phase states, which are necessary to
understand the functional and structural changes occurring in the disease
Laser powder bed fusion of refractory metals: A new way to produce components and devices for nuclear physics
The research conducted by the DIAM laboratory (Development
and Innovation on Additive Manufacturing) attempts to produce and characterize materials that are not well specified nor well characterized by state of the art for the
LPBF process but are not yet commercially available. The materials chosen were determined by experiments and research carried out by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN). This contribution focuses on refractory metals produced via additive manufacturing, especially molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum and niobium, from the material characterization point of view to the final product design and fabrication
Development of a DAQ system for the CMS ECAL Phase 2 recommissioning
In view of the High-Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in the barrel region of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) the entire readout electronics will be replaced to cope with the more stringent requirements in terms of trigger latency, acquisition rate, and radiation and pileup resilience. The configuration sequence for the new on-detector electronics, involving
both the improved very-front-end and front-end cards, is reported. The sequence of commands and parameters to load in the electronics is controlled by a software developed at CERN by the ECAL upgrade group and it will be the base on which to build the new data acquisition system (DAQ)
Higgs boson anomalous couplings using the di-photon channel with the CMS experiment
Studies of CP violation and anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons are presented. Data were acquired by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 at a proton-proton
collision energy of 13 TeV. The kinematic effects in the Higgs boson two-photons decay and its production in association with two jets (Vector Boson Fusion) is analyzed. A matrix element technique and multivariate algorithms are employed to identify the production mechanisms and to increase sensitivity to the Higgs boson tensor structure of the interactions, optimized using the full simulation of the detector. The measurement of the strength of the coupling of the Higgs boson to vector boson is performed on data through a fit which considers the simultaneous presence of Standard Model and Beyond Standard Model contributions to the coupling parameters
