Search for η′-mesic nuclei in 12C{}^{12} C reaction with the WASA detector at GSI-FRS

    Get PDF
We conducted an experimental search for η′ -mesic nuclei, bound systems of an η' meson and a nucleus, in 12C(p, dp) reactions. We measured the missing mass in the (p, d) reaction to obtain the mass spectrum of the reaction product near the η′ emission threshold. Forward-emitted deuterons were momentum-analyzed in the FRS of GSI. We installed a nearly 4π detector WASA near the 12C target to effectively select formation and decay of the η′ -mesic nuclei. We are presently finalizing the analysis

14N15O{}^{14} N^{15}O reaction measurement at the LNGS Bellotti Ion Beam Facility

14N(p,γ) 15O is an astrophysical key reaction as the bottleneck for the CNO cycle. It directly influences the lifetime of massive stars and solar CNO neutrino flux, a precise extrapolation of its cross-section at astrophysical energies is therefore essential for inferring the solar metallicity. This work reports on the experimental setup and target characterization for a renewed deep-underground measurement of this reaction in the energy range between 0.25 and 1.5 MeV at the 3.5 MV accelerator of the Bellotti Ion Beam Facility. Preliminary cross-section data for the ground-state transition, plus 6.79 MeV and 5.24 MeV secondary transitions are presented

Searching for X17 using resonant production at PADME

    Get PDF
The ATOMKI Collaboration (Debrecen, Hungary) observed an anomaly in the angular correlation of e+e− pairs emitted by Internal Pair Creation (IPC) in 8Be, 4He and 12C nuclear transitions. This anomaly can be explained introducing a new neutral boson of ∼ 17MeV mass, now named X17. The Positron Annihilation into Dark Matter Experiment (PADME) based at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF), was designed and constructed to search for dark photons A in the interaction between positrons, provided by the local Beam Test Facility, and electrons of a fixed target. In order to probe the existence of the new X17 particle, PADME detector has been modified and a new data-taking run has been undertaken

SYNCT: PET-driven SYNthetic control CT generation for treatment monitoring in proton therapy

    Get PDF
Protontherapy(PT)offerstumourtreatments with highly conformal depth-dose distributions and less damage nearby healthy tissues over photon beam therapy. However, PT is sensitive to patient-specific anatomical variations which may lead to severe dose deviations. A control CT is generally prescribed to check the patient’s morphology. Treatment verification systems such as in-beam Positron Emission Tomography (IB-PET) are desirable to avoid the delayed detection of anatomical variations during PT treatments. However, the interpretation of the PET monitoring data is still a subject of research since PET does not offer a direct representation of the disease progress as a control CT does. The SYNCT project aims to overcome this issue by using Neural Networks (NN) to produce synthetic control CT (sCT) images which can provide a non-invasive and interpretable picture of the anatomical variations in the patients. We studied the feasibility of sCT production with MC simulations. The output of our NN, a Vision Transformer, correctly produced the sCTs, which were compared with the ground truth across multiple similarity metrics. This work can be a highly valuable tool in adaptive PT

Measurement of the anomalous spin precession frequency ωa in the Muon mthg−2 experiment at Fermilab

The muon magnetic anomaly aμ =(gμ −2)/2 is a low-energy ob servable, which can be both measured and computed to high precision, making it a sensitive test of the Standard Model (SM). In April 2021, the E989 Collaboration at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) published the first result based on the first year of data taking (Run-1), and in August 2023 a new result was published based on two more years of data taking (Run-2 and Run-3). The new result was in agreement with the first one and with the previous experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and the combination of these results brought the uncertainty on the experimental measurement of aμ to the unprecedented value of 0.19 parts per million (ppm). This paper will present details about the improvements and upgrades since the 2021 result, and it will describe the final statistical and systematic sources of uncertainty on ωa in the 2023 result

    Charm physics studies at CMS

Measuring the charm cross-section at CMS experiment at the LHC provides a test of Quantum Chromodynamics. The differential cross-section is extracted by studying the decay of D∗ mesons, in a final state with Kππ. Some common aspects of the studies performed so far, such as signal extraction and separation of charm and beauty contributions, are described

Fast and efficient feature importance calculations for EVOO spectroscopic data

Chemometrics via artificial neural networks is nowadays the state of the art for food analysis. Here we consider an application aiming to distinguish European (EU) extra vergin olive oil (EVOO) from non EU one. Though the interpretability of neural network is still an open issue, here we propose a simple and transparent method to “open the box” and showing the relative importance of the spectral wavelengths in determining the classification output

Estimating climate extreme indices and the related uncertainties using U. S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) near-surface temperature

    Get PDF
The availability of near-surface temperature records from reference networks enables the quantification of measurement uncertainties, which may have an asymmetrical nature due to effects contributing only to the warm or cold bias. In this work, two extreme indices (Consecutive Frost Days and Consecutive Ice Days) and the related uncertainties are calculated for the period 2006–2020 from the U. S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN) and discussed with the calculation without considering the uncertainties. Overall, the results show an accumulated yearly number exceeding 15 periods of CFD and CIDs, with the largest values at the high est latitude covered by the USCRN considered stations. Propagating asymmetric uncertainties for the specified indices revealed a pronounced, latitude-dependent, influence on the indices’ estimations due to accounting for the measurement uncertainties. Positive uncertainties show larger values compared to negative ones for the considered Indices. The assessment of uncertainty is a crucial component in enhancing research and decision-making connected to climate change, as it underscores the incomplete understanding of variability in the climate system and the limitations of climate models and observational instruments

Teaching efficacy of role playing in optometrist education

    Get PDF
Simulation of the double role of patient and practitioner is a usual procedure for students in optometry clinical practice, but it is usually limited to the performance of visual assessment procedures and the Lecturer’s control is focused on these. In contrast, the way in which the practitioner builds the relationship with the patient, a key step in obtaining their cooperation during the measurement, is not given specific attention. This pilot project aims to test the effectiveness of role playing in creating and developing the interaction between patient and professional. The project in the first phase allows the teacher to verify through video recording the behavior of the pairs of students simulating the two roles and then critically analyze it with the students themselves; there is also an evaluation through questionnaires of self-perception reported by the students involved. In a second phase, the project plans to reevaluate through questionnaires how self-perception has been changed by the critical analysis of the video recordings collected in the first phase, with or without possible rotation of roles
