You Can’t Heyde Forever
Heyde’s syndrome describes an association between aortic stenosis and a predisposition to bleeding from intestinal angiodysplasia resulting from acquired von Willebrand disease.
We present the case of an 82-year-old woman with recurrent intestinal bleeding, severe anaemia and secondary myocardial infarction. Investigation identified ileal angiectasia as the source of haemorrhage. As echocardiography revealed severe aortic stenosis the patient underwent surgical valve replacement. At her 3-month follow-up, the patient reported no new bleeding episodes and her functional status had improved.
This case highlights Heyde’s syndrome, an entity probably underdiagnosed despite the high prevalence of aortic stenosis and intestinal angiodysplasia in elderly patients
Not So Incidental: Pheochromocytoma in an Adult with Unrepaired Cyanotic Heart Disease
Pheochromocytoma, a rare neuroendocrine tumour, is often encountered in the general internal medicine clinic as an adrenal incidentaloma. Even rarer is its presence in adult cyanotic heart disease, although there are a few documented reports of this association in various paediatric populations, with chronic hypoxia being the likely driving force. Here we present the case of a 38-year-old adult with unrepaired complex cyanotic congenital heart disease with biochemically proven pheochromocytoma presenting as an adrenal incidentaloma to a general internal medicine clinic
A Low Rivaroxaban Plasma Level May Indicate Anticoagulation Undertreatment
Few reports have been published on the correlation between plasma concentrations of rivaroxaban and clinical outcome in patients who have experienced venous thromboembolism. This article describes the case of a 44-year-old woman who experienced deep vein thrombosis during anticoagulation therapy with rivaroxaban, with evidence of repeated low plasma levels of the drug. We postulate that the determination of plasma rivaroxaban anti-Xa activity can be useful in the evaluation of anticoagulation therapy in selected cases
Spontaneous Spinal Haemorrhage as a Complication of Oral Anticoagulant Therapy: A Case Report and Literature Review
Spinal cord haematoma, or haematomyelia, is a rare condition caused by several unusual disease processes. Traumatic events, such as spinal cord injury and surgery or procedures involving the spinal cord, are the most important causes of spinal cord haematoma. Rarely, it is associated with anticoagulation therapy. Irrespective of cause, spinal cord haematoma is considered a neurosurgical emergency and must be treated promptly in order to prevent neurological sequelae. The authors describe the case of a 69-year-old patient taking warfarin in the therapeutic range for a mechanic mitral valve, who developed chest pain with cervical and dorsal radiation, and experienced sudden paraparesis of the limbs. A CT of the spine confirmed haematomyelia. A high index of suspicion, prompt recognition and immediate intervention are essential to prevent major morbidity and mortality from intraspinal haemorrhage
Measurements of quarkonium production in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions with ALICE at LHC
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is devoted to the study of heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies. In such collisions a deconfined state of hadronic matter, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), is formed. Quarkonium states are important probes to study the QGP evolution since their formation happens early during the collision and their production rate is modified in the interaction with the medium. The latest ALICE results on quarkonium production in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions will be presented and discussed

Charm physics prospects at the Belle II experiment
Belle II is a major upgrade of the Belle experiment and will operate at the B-factory SuperKEKB in Japan. Here we discuss the expected sensitivity of Belle II for D0 - D¯ 0 mixing and CP violation measurements in the charm sector,
which will benefit from a factor 50 increase in statistics and an improved vertex detection. The impact on the determination of CKM parameters from the measurements of purely leptonic D mesons decays is discussed. A novel method of flavour tagging to substantially increase the sample of D0 and D¯ 0 is also presented
The calibration system of the muon g − 2 experiment at Fermilab
The Muon g − 2 experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment, aμ, to an unprecedented precision of 140 ppb. To reach this goal each channel of the 24 calorimeters must be calibrated with a relative accuracy at the sub-per-mill level. Such accuracy level is a challenge for the design of the calibration system because it has never been previously required and realized

The EUSO mission to study UHECR from space: Status and perspectives
The EUSO Collaboration has been studying a detector to be
installed on the International Space Station which will observe ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) from space for the first time. The observation of UHECR from space offers several advantages such as large field of view, uniform observation of both celestial hemispheres, uniform detector response. For these reasons, spacebased observatories are complementary to the ground-based detectors. The EUSO Collaboration already built two pathfinders to test high-performance electronics and
optical systems to meet the science requirements and the constraints (mass, power, hardness, ...) of space-borne detectors. Second-generation pathfinders, EUSO-SPB and Mini-EUSO, are currently under development. EUSO-SPB is a NASA Super Pressure Balloon payload scheduled to fly from New Zealand in Spring 2017 for a flight duration which may reach 100 days. The main scientific objective is the first
observation and measurements of UHECR generated air showers by looking down from near space with a fluorescence detector. Mini-EUSO telescope (a joint ASIRoscosmos mission) will be placed on the Russian Module of the International Space Station in 2019. Its science objectives are the study of UV emission of natural, astronomical and artificial origin and of atmospheric phenomena. In this contribution, we will also report on the status and perspectives of the future EUSO mission
