Old and new bioinvasions in the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coasts

    Get PDF
The Mediterranean basin, a crossing area between western and eastern countries has became in these last years a marine region of transition and mixture for local biota where old and new biological invasions are changing the native structure and functioning of coastal ecosystems. The outcome of this study has shown that two macroalgal indopacific species, entering into the basin through Suez Canal, are actually spreading in the Western area of the basin. Amongst these, there is an old acquaintance named Caulerpa cylindracea, spreading all along the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coasts and a new one, known as Caulerpa taxifolia var. disticophylla, recently reported in a southern station of the regional coastline. Both species are reported in locations close to harbours and/or wet docks for a dispersal mechanism, via boating traffic, highlighting the great tolerance of these species to high level of pollution and sedimentation. The results confirm the extreme invasive behaviour of these alien species not only in the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coasts but also in the Western basin suggesting a process of tropicalization in the Mediterranean biota, actually ongoing

Cardiac Angiosarcoma: From Cardiac Tamponade to Ischaemic Stroke – A Diagnostic Challenge

    Get PDF
Cardiac angiosarcoma (CA) is the most common primary malignant heart tumour. Its atypical symptoms and rapidly progressive nature contribute to delayed diagnosis and poor outcome. We report the case of a 52-year-old woman admitted with a large pericardial effusion. An extensive study of the aetiology of the pericardial effusion was inconclusive. Two months later the patient returned with ischaemic stroke. An echocardiogram revealed a probable right atrium contained rupture. The patient was submitted to surgical correction but died 9 days later. Histology revealed an angiosarcoma. This case exemplifies the atypical presentation of CA and highlights the importance of a multimodal diagnostic work-up in patients with idiopathic pericardial effusion

The project combines technological innovation with social innovation in order to create a Smart and Resilience Archaeological Park than can generates a Smart @ LAND that is a territory including the areas adjacent to Pompeii (Buffer zone) managed in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

Components and design guidelines for solar cooling systems: The experience of ZEOSOL

    Get PDF
In this paper, the activity carried out within the H2020 project ZEOSOL is introduced. Making use of the lessons learned from previous solar cooling projects, an advanced hybrid solar cooling system was developed. It consists of a thermal and an electric unit in parallel integrated in a single unit with the dry-cooler. ZEOSOL is based on commercial components but was optimised in order to guarantee optimal seasonal performance, high reliability (and therefore reduced maintenance) and easy installation. The components of the system were experimentally tested in the laboratories of AkoTec, CNR ITAE and Fahrenheit, with a specific attention to the definition of performance maps as a function of operating and design parameters. During the tests of each component, possible control strategies and rules were identified. Subsequently, a simplified sizing tool was developed, which can be adapted to different configurations and climates and takes into account user-experience for different stakeholders, such as engineers and installers. The methodology implemented is described, in order to be used as a guideline for the definition of standard sizing procedures for solar cooling systems. As exemplary cases, the results for three different climates (Athens, Berlin and Ryiad) are also presented

Decriminalizzare la povertà? A proposito del rilancio sopranazionale di un dibattito

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The villa-complex of Theodoric in Galeata is one of the latest examples, at least within the Italian peninsula, of the great private residences of late antiquity. The site is multi-layered and has evidence of seventeen centuries of occupation, from the 6th century BC to the 12th century AD Important new knowledge of the pre-Roman (a settlement of the Late Iron age) and Roman (a large villa) phases of the site has been acquired. The most significant results, however, concern the late antiquity phase. The excavations, in fact, have led to a new interpretation of the complex known as the ‘Palace’ or villa of the Goth king Theodoric. In this long-running excavation it has been possible to test the transformations of excavation methods and techniques, which have evolved over the years

Secondary Fahr’s Disease: A Consequence of Post-Thyroidectomy Hypoparathyroidism

    Get PDF
Objective: The objective of this case report is to emphasize the importance of considering uncommon conditions like Fahr’s disease in the differential diagnosis of seizures and cognitive impairment, especially in patients with a history of thyroidectomy. Material and Methods: A 56-year-old woman who had undergone subtotal thyroidectomy 25 years previously presented with movement disorder and cognitive impairment secondary to hypoparathyroidism. A CT scan of the brain showed pathognomonic bilateral calcification in the basal ganglia, thalamus and cerebellar nuclei. Result: The patient was diagnosed with Fahr’s disease caused by post-thyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism and successfully managed with oral calcium, carbidopa/levodopa and haloperidol. Conclusion: We recommend the routine use of CT scanning in the long-term follow-up of post-thyroidectomy patients

Aberrant gene expression profiles in Mediterranean sea urchin reproductive tissues after metal exposures

    Get PDF
Marine organisms are exposed to numerous pollutants. To evaluate the effects of metal exposure at molecular level in reproductive tissues, we profiled the sea urchin transcriptional response after non-lethal exposures using pathway-focused mRNA expression analyses. We show that exposures to relatively high concentrations of both essential and toxic metals hugely affected the gonadic expression of several genes involved in stress-response, detoxification, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, without significant changes in gonadosomatic indices. Even though treatments did not result in reproductive tissues visible alterations, metal exposures negatively affected the main mechanisms of stress-response, detoxification and survival of adult P. lividus. Additionally, transcriptional changes observed in P. lividus gonads may cause altered gametogenesis and maintenance of heritable aberrant epigenetic effects

The Marine and Coastal Landscape: Geological and Cultural Heritage

    Get PDF
The activity carried out in the frame of Alternanza Scuola Lavoro training course, between the ISMAR-CNR and Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei in Naples, was focused on issues related to the sea resource. After an accurate bibliographic research, aimed to the deepening of basic concepts on the components and dynamics of the Earth and Sea System Sciences, and practical activities (laboratory and field), carried out in collaboration with the researchers of ISMAR, the student was trained in a critical reading of the territory in terms of landscape forms, with particular attention to the geological definitions of Hazard, Risk and therefore Resilience. The experience conducted with the scholars has shown that the understanding and enhancement of the Neapolitan Landscape in scientific terms, represents a cultural heritage and can have broad and interesting implications in terms of sustainable economic development, as reported by the Convention European Landscape

Multiple Arterial Thrombosis in Seronegative Antiphospholipid Syndrome: Need for New Diagnostic Criteria?

    Get PDF
Background: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is defined as thromboembolic complications and/or pregnancy morbidity in the presence of persistent increased titres of antiphospholipid antibodies. Nevertheless, some patients with clinical signs suggestive of APS are negative for diagnostic antibodies and may be classified as having seronegative-APS (SN-APS). Among the ‘non-diagnostic’ antibodies, a few studies have suggested that the IgG anti-vimentin/cardiolipin antibodies (AVA/CL) may be associated with risk of thrombosis. Aims: The aim of this case report is to encourage the assessment of non-conventional antibodies in APS. Patient and methods: We report the case of a 69-year-old male patient with rapid onset of apparently unexplained multiple exclusively arterial thrombotic events in both coronary and peripheral vascular beds. Results: The patient did not meet the diagnostic criteria for APS but was positive for AVA/CL, which result persisted on further testing at 3 and 6 months. Discussion: Ongoing research has revealed the existence of non-criteria antibodies which may be relevant for the diagnosis of SN-APS and should be included in the classification criteria for the disease
