First direct measurement of the neutron Sachs magnetic form factor
The BESIII experiment has collected data samples between 2 and 3.08 GeV to study baryons cross sections and form factors. While there are many measurements of the e+e− → pp¯ cross section, the knowledge of the nn¯ final state
is scarce. In this paper, the analysis of this final state by the BESIII Collaboration will be presented. This analysis uses three different strategies to maximize the
neutron detection efficiency. This lead to the world’s most precise measurement of the e+e− → nn¯ cross section and the first direct measurement of the magnetic form
factor of the neutron
New reconstruction algorithm for the fast neutron MONDO tracker
Particle Therapy employs charged light ions to treat cancer with localized energy deposition, so that damages to healthy tissues are significantly reduced with respect to conventional radiotherapy. When using carbon ion beams fragmentation has to be taken into account: the ultra-fast secondary neutrons can be responsible for additional dose also far from the treated volume, and are likely candidates for the occurrence of secondary malignant neoplasms. MONDO is a neutron tracker dedicated to the characterization of the secondary neutrons produced in the interaction between human tissues and the therapeutic beam. It is made of a compact matrix of plastic scintillating fibers coupled with a CMOS-based SPAD sensor (SBAM) developed specifically for MONDO. Its technique of measuring the neutron four-momentum is based on the detection of recoiled protons scattered during two consecutive elastic collision events. A Monte Carlo simulation based on the FLUKA code has been developed to optimize the MONDO detector geometry and study its characteristics. The sensor has been fully implemented in the simulation, and an algorithm for event reconstruction, operating with a cluster building technique, has been written to evaluate detection efficiency, energy resolution and backpointing rejection capability from the chip readout. The algorithm description and first results are presented in this manuscript
Nanoscale characterization of the fibrillar networking in collagen-based cultural heritage artefacts
Parchment and leather artefacts are frequently involved in biodeterioration processes. Ionizing radiations represent a valid alternative to the chemical biocide normally employed to stop these deterioration processes. In this work, the use of the X-rays irradiation has been tested to evaluate its possible application to inhibit the microbial growth on parchment and leather samples. Two microscopic techniques, namely SEM and AFM, have been used to obtain information on the effects eventually induced by the treatment on the collagen matrix, helping to identify the threshold dose for which the treatment results effective and safe for parchment and leather cultural heritage objects
Urban landscape, urban regeneration. Interdisciplinary academic class in Tokyo
In 2021 at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Design of Hosei University in Tokyo started an international and interdisciplinary academic program aimed to analyze the urban landscape in Japan in relationship with the need to valorize its historical paradigms.

High-accuracy azimuth measurements: The ENEA solar compass in its instrumental and smart version
The accurate assessment of the azimuth of a given direction as, e.g., the geographic North, is of utmost importance in many fields. The electronic solar compass patented by ENEA achieves an accuracy of 0.01◦, it is up to 100 times cheaper than instruments having similar accuracy (GPS, gyros, . . . ), and it is also very fast in answering (few seconds). It is based on a simple but effective optical system to capture the Sun direction, and on an analytical algorithm to provide the Sun position. The ENEA solar compass has been tested and used in many circumstances, e.g., for mapping surveys, to align concentrating solar mirrors, and for orientation measurements of structures in archaeological sites. We obtained notable results, together with INGV, in magnetic declination measurements in Antarctica. Finally, we moved the ENEA solar compass algorithm to smartphones, enabling
their use as orienteering devices
Photosensitizing proteins for a targeted antibacterial photodynamic inactivation
One of the emerging global health threats is the drug-resistant microbial diseases that could cause millions of deaths each year by 2050. A very promising tool to tackle antimicrobial resistance is photodynamic therapy that exploits the ability of a photosensitizer to generate oxidizing species upon illumination to kill bacteria. The research activity in this field is very active and, following this approach, we aim to develop a targeted theranostic agent where a protein is used as a “modular” carrier, transporting a fluorescent photosensitizer, and an antibody to confer selectivity to the photodynamic effect
OPES: On-the-fly Probability Enhanced Sampling method
Molecular simulations are playing an ever-increasing role, finding applications in fields as varied as physics, chemistry, biology and material science. However, many phenomena of interest take place on time scales that are out of reach for standard molecular simulations. This is known as the sampling problem and over the years several enhanced sampling methods have been developed to mitigate this issue. We propose a unified approach that puts on the same footing two of the most popular families of enhanced sampling methods and paves the way for novel combined approaches. The on-the-fly probability enhanced sampling
method provides an efficient implementation of such generalized approach, while also focusing on simplicity and robustnes
