The paper focuses on a section (cc. 24r-136v) of the Sloane Ms. 416 from the British Library in London, a fifteenth-century miscellanea drawn up in Italian, Latin and a hybrid Italo-Romance-Latin-English. The manuscript, known as Manoscritto veneziano, was published in 1991 by Bianca Silvia Tosatti: the book was assembled by a British doctor, who, in the middle of the fifteenth century, spent some time between northern Italy and Switzerland. The section examined in the paper comprises mostly short prescriptions of a medical, alchemical and technical-artistic nature. The recipes are extremely rich in vocabulary: ingredients for prescriptions, plants, containers and utensils, the procedures necessary to create the preparations, and terminology relating to diseases and their cure

Ricettari medici: il caso del ms. 215 della Biblioteca Classense di Ravenna

    Get PDF
The Medieval Medical recipe book as a full textual genre have been just lately revalued, thus finally allowing us to distinguish it from others products of the medical knowledge of Middle Ages and to define its main subtypes. In the light of the most recent studies, this contribution analyses the second Medical receptary included in ms. 215 of the Classense Library of Ravenna. The aim is to highligh the peculiarities and offer a reflection on the main categories that have been proposed so far for this specific genre. Therefore, the medical recipe book will be placed in comparison with two others receptaries, both assignables, according to Cifuentes’ classification, to two different categories: the domestical medical recipe book included in the Memoriale of Francesco Bentaccordi (ms. 1 F 54, Archives départementales de Vaucluse), edited by Brambilla & Hayez, and the professional medical recipe book, currently unpublished and included as well in ms. 215, Classense Library of Ravenna, on folios 16r-66v

Tra parole d'odio e odio per le parole. Metamorfosi delle censura

    Get PDF

    Copper-induced Haemolytic Anaemia

    Get PDF
Acute copper toxicity is uncommon in Western countries and is often the result of accidental consumption or a suicide attempt. We report the case of a 65-year-old man presenting to the accident and emergency department after a suicide attempt with ingestion of Bordeaux mixture, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and bleach. Primary evaluation showed caustic oesophagitis, toxic hepatitis and acute renal injury, which were treated with supportive care. During admission, he developed a non-immune haemolytic anaemia associated with high levels of copper in urine and blood. Chelation treatment with penicillamine was started and evolution was favourable after 1 month of treatment. Copper poisoning can be lethal. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are key for a favourable prognosis

Neutrino quantum decoherence at reactor experiments

Using most recent data from reactor experiments we derive the presently best bound on the neutrino wave-packet width and show the robustness of the measurement of the standard oscillation parameters. We also discuss how much JUNO can improve this bound

    Spin-to-charge conversion in Bi2Se3/Ge(111)

Nowadays, topological insulators (TIs) are receiving an increasing attention. This is due to the fact that these materials exhibit spin-polarized surface states, which can be exploited to convert a spin current into a charge current and vice versa. Here, we investigate a prototypical TI/semiconductor system: a patterned Bi2Se3/Ge(111) heterostructure, where spin-polarized electrons are injected inside Ge by means of optical orientation and detected in a Bi2Se3 bar, after diffusion in the Ge substrate. The spin current is converted into a measurable electric potential by means of the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE). We employ a non-local injection-detection scheme, since spin generation and detection are spatially separated. We have studied the IREE signal as a function of the degree of circular polarization and power of the light. Moreover, we estimate the value of the spin-diffusion length in Ge(111) which is ls ≈ 5.8 μm, in agreement with previous literature reports. We thus conclude that the Bi2Se3/Ge(111) can be effectively exploited as a reliable spin detector

Gravitational wave cosmology with galaxy surveys

    No full text
This paper is based on my presentation at the 106◦ National Congress of the Italian Physical Society in September 2020. In the talk, I presented the latest cosmological measurements of the Hubble constant H0 using gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens. Due to the lack of GW events with an associated electromagnetic counterpart apart from GW170817, we have used the dark standard siren method, that does not rely on counterparts but uses galaxies’ positions from galaxy surveys instead. Using data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the standard siren analysis using three GW events (GW170814, GW170817, GW190814) yields H0 = 72 .0+12 −8.2 km s−1 Mpc−1 (68% Highest Density Interval). Analyses of future gravitational wave events from the next LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA observing run using the statistical standard siren method and a DES–like galaxy catalog are expected to bring even more precise constraints on H0, at the level of∼ 2–5% (statistical) precision after ∼ 200 GW detections at a distance of < 900 Mpc. Next-generation GW detectors will also provide precise enough GW measurements that their detections, together with a galaxy survey like the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), will be able to place precise constraints on the growth of large-scale structure and on gravity models

Realization and characterization of a low intensity noise ultrafast Yb-doped fiber amplifier

    No full text
We report on the design and whole characterization of low-noise and affordable-cost Yb-doped double-clad fiber amplifiers operating at room temperature in the near-infrared spectral region at pulse repetition rate of 160MHz. Two different experimental configurations are discussed. In the first one, a broadband seed radiation with a transform limited pulse duration of 71fs, an optical spectrum of 20nm wide at around 1040nm, and ∼20mW average power is adopted. In the second configuration, the seed radiation is constituted by stretched pulses with a time duration as long as 170ps, with a 5nm narrow pulse spectrum centered at 1029nm and ∼2mW average input power. In both cases we obtained transform limited pulse trains with an amplified output power exceeding 2W. Furthermore, relative intensity noise measurements show that no significant noise degradation occurs during the amplification process

Validation with Raman spectroscopy of lapis lazuli provenance study

    No full text
Lapis lazuli is a stone appreciated in the art world since ancient times; its use dates back to more than 6500 years ago. There are few mineral sources of this stone in the world and the provenance characterization is an open question. However, the rarity of the sources certainly represents a positive aspect for the indication of the origin of artefacts. Lapis lazuli is a rock consisting mainly of lazurite, diopside, calcite and pyrite; other constituents may be present, linked to the different mines. In this work, we present the development of a method for the recognition of the sources of lapis lazuli. The results obtained on stones from five samples of known origin and on three sets of unknown polished stones were obtained with Raman analysis. We thus verified the results achieved by our previous assignment based on the use of the synergy between the characteristic fluorescence of X-rays and the luminescence stimulated by X-rays. The choice of using Raman spectroscopy as a fast, non-invasive and portable method to determine the geological provenance of lapis lazuli pigments will then be discussed. Finally, we were able to obtain a clearer distinction for the different classified provenances
