A full-comprehensive experimental and theoretical approach applied to the 12C(18O, 18F)12B single charge-exchange reaction at 15.3 AMeV
The broad network of nuclear reactions coming from the 18O + 12C collision was studied to test the capability of state-of-art nuclear structure and reaction theories in describing the 12C(18O,18F)12B single charge-exchange reaction using a new comprehensive experimental and theoretical multi-channel approach. The experiment, performed in Catania, at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (LNS-INFN), used the 18O beam at 15.3 AMeV
incident energy produced by the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer
The influence of plasma on the morphological and structural properties of TiO2 thin films
Uniform and dense titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films, required in several fields, can be achieved by using standard deposition. Here, we investigate the effect of using a plasma source during e-beam deposition on the morphological and structural properties of TiO2 thin films. We show that morphology, crystallization onset temperature, and crystallization evolution are all affected by the change in
material density, achieved by employing or not plasma bombardment
Towards ballistic vertical transistors by graphene integration with nitride semiconductors
2D materials integration with group III-nitride semiconductors is currently explored as a platform for novel optoelectronic and ultra-high frequency electronic devices and sensors. In this paper, the Schottky junction formed by graphene and AlGaN/GaN heterostructures has been used as the building block
of a graphene-base hot electron transistor potentially able to operate in the THz frequency regime
Cryogenic vacuum behavior of porous materials of interest for future accelerators
The properties of vacuum components at cryogenic temperature
represent a crucial aspect to assure accelerator’s best performances. These are not only intrinsic to each surface, but also to the residual gas physisorbed on the walls and to the many interactions such surfaces will undergo during operation. Here we report a study on the effects induced by temperature fluctuations and electron irradiation on a class of porous materials which are potential candidates for future accelerators. The results will be useful to predict the gas quantity delivered in cryogenic vacuum from porous surfaces
Soil samples as a dose sensing element: Preliminary results
In this work, the possibility of exploiting the soil as an X-ray radiation sensor was studied. Different soil samples were irradiated using a 10 MeV X-ray beam, and five different delivered dose values in the 0–35 Gy range. The irradiation effect was correlated, through two electrodes inserted inside the soil, to output voltage (Vout) measured by using a specific measurement system. A 4.45% decrease in Vout between the non-irradiated and the 35 Gy-irradiated soil samples was found. This evinces a correlation between Vout, and the dose absorbed by the soil due to the reduction of bacterial activity which, in turn, suggest that the chemoelectrical transduction propriety of the soil could be exploited to produce low-cost, eco-friendly, mimetic, and natural-based radiation sensors
Computational simulations at the interface of physics and society: A teaching-learning module for high-school students
The increasing role of computational simulations as the basis for policies and decision-making processes imposes the educational community to think about ways to introduce them in upper high-school teaching of physics as the third
pillar of scientific research. In this paper, we present the principles at the basis of the design of a teaching-learning module on simulations of complex systems and implemented in a course organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy “A. Righi” of the University of Bologna for university orientation. Specifically, we discuss the value of computational simulations as interdisciplinary and futureoriented objects that can act as bridges between physics, STEM disciplines, and society
Investigating the Principle of Relativity and the Principle of Equivalence in classical mechanics: A teaching learning sequence based on experiments and simulations
We present a teaching-learning sequence on relative motion that addresses some fundamental aspects such as the principle of relativity and the principle of equivalence in classical mechanics. To highlight key concepts and motivate students to explore the topic, experimental activities based on video analysis and some interactive simulations were used, which can be modified on the fly by the students. These tools are useful to stimulate autonomous investigation and to support
the modelling of different physical situations
Highlights from CHIMERA Collaboration
The activities performed by the CHIMERA Collaboration since the 2018 IWM-EC workshop are outlined in this paper. Experiments performed in the last three years and results obtained through dedicated analyses of experimental data already acquired are summarized. A brief report on the activities conducted at GSI is also included
A theoretical overview of isospin and EOS effects in heavy-ion reactions at intermediate energies
The isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions is a fundamental issue in nuclear physics and has broad ramifications in astrophysics. Its uncertainties, especially the difference of neutron-proton interactions in the isosinglet and isotriplet channels, affect significantly the density and momentum dependence of the isovector single-nucleon potential and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlation in neutron-rich matter. Consequently, the neutron-proton effective mass splitting and the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are still rather uncertain. Heavy-ion reactions, especially those involving rare isotopes, are a useful tool for probing the isospin dependence of nuclear effective interactions through 1) the neutron-skin in coordinate and proton-skin in momentum of the initial state of colliding nuclei, 2) the density and momentum dependence of especially the isovector nuclear mean-field as well as 3) the isospin dependence of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. Observations of neutron stars especially since GW1710817 have also helped us significantly in understanding the isospin dependence of nuclear effective interactions. We summarize here a review talk on these issues given at the 2021 International Workshop on multi-facets of EOS and Clustering.
