INFN-CHNet at work: X-ray fluorescence analyses on works of art at the CCR “La Venaria Reale”

    No full text
INFN-CHNet, the network of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) devoted to Cultural Heritage, has the mission to develop instruments and methods for heritage science. Within this network, a Macro X-Ray Fluorescence (MA-XRF) scanner was realised for both elemental imaging and spectroscopy. It has been used for a number of applications, such as paintings, ceramics, mosaics and manuscripts. As an example, some measurements conducted at the Centro di Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” will be presented. Furthermore, general aspects of the analysis with the INFN-CHNet MA-XRF scanner will be discussed

Does an Early Physics approach exist?

    No full text
We engaged some high school Physics teachers in a deep revision of their PCK (Pedagogical Content Knowledge) to contrast the trend of a diffuse disaffection and negative attitude of the students towards Physics studies. Starting from the analysis of the Math/Phys interplay prevalent patterns of the teachers, we observed that the application type is the most common, which adversely affects students’ learning. For this reason, we suggested that they adopt a new approach, based on conceptual fragmentation and multiple representations reasoning tools. This approach stimulates teachers to adopt different Math/Phys interplay patterns. Here we present the main features of some of the tested activities, which also allowed teachers to better understand and recognise the learning challenges students have to cope with

    Cerenkov detectors for cosmic rays

    No full text
Cosmic rays are generated by the most powerful existing particle accelerator: the Universe. Cosmic rays reaching the ground are mainly muons, that can be detected with the Cerenkov effect. This article describes two muon detectors ˇ built using simple materials: a thermos and an aquarium filled with water and read out by photomultiplier tubes. The readout electronics provides the pulse height of the generated Cerenkov light and the time of arrival of the particle. The detector ˇ is easy to transport and use with a laptop PC and represents an advanced and relatively low cost didactic tool, without requiring any complex setup or dedicated radiation sources

Two-dimensional electron beam diagnostics with X-ray heterodyne near field speckles

    No full text
In this work we report on recent two-dimensional (2D) electron beam diagnostics at the NCD-SWEET undulator beamline at the ALBA Synchrotron Light Source with a novel interferometric technique based on X-ray Heterodyne Near Field Speckles. We show that the method is intrinsically 2D and can resolve beam sizes as small as 5 μm. We also discuss relevance to future fourth-generation light sources near the diffraction limit

Several aspects of nonlocal field theory and gravity

    No full text
In this mini review we consider nonlocal field theory including nonlocal quantum gravity. We discuss gauge models with γ5-anomalies and show how nonlocal field theory can help to make such models meaningful. We consider the field theory with infinite number of local fields with local interactions and show that an account of an infinite number of local fields leads to effective ultraviolet finite nonlocal field theory. We also discuss nonlocal generalization of nonsupersymmetric SU (5) Georgi-Glashow GUT and show that it is possible to solve the problems with the proton lifetime and the Weinberg angle without introduction of additional particles in the spectrum of the theory. Nonlocal scale Λ responsible for ultraviolet cutoff coincides (up to some factor) with GUT scale MGU T ≈ 3 · 1016 GeV

    INDRA electronics upgrade

    No full text
The INDRA charged particle multidetector has been operating since 1993, and up to the first experiment coupling it with FAZIA performed in 2019 it has always functioned with the same electronics developed at the beginning of the 1990s. A major upgrade of the full electronics (both for data acquisition and power supplies) has recently been completed, in time for the next INDRA-FAZIA experiment, scheduled for April 2022. In this contribution we will present this new electronics

Status of data analysis and preliminary results of the CHIFAR experiment

    No full text
In the CHIFAR experiment, carried out at the INFN-LNS laboratory, we studied reactions between beams of 124Sn, 124Xe and 112Sn, accelerated at 20 AMeV, and targets of 64Ni, 64Zn and 58Ni by using the CHIMERA multi-detector coupled to 10 telescopes of the FARCOS array. The main topics of the experiment are the competition between reaction mechanisms and the Intermediate Mass Fragment production phenomenon, aiming to extend towards the low energy regime the studies performed in previous CHIMERA experiments carried out at beam energy of 35 AMeV. Status of data analysis and preliminary results will be presented

Study of the Hoyle state in 12C produced by 20Ne + 12C reactions

    No full text
Since its discovery, the Hoyle state of 12C has attracted much interest. Its properties have been discussed several times, due to its cluster structure and the astrophysical implications. In this contribution, the Hoyle state decay has been studied using 20Ne+12C reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method has been used to get all the properties of the original 12C starting from a 3-α correlation. The background in the reconstructions was removed using the event mixing method. Finally, we made a simulation of the 3-α decay, including the effects of angular and energy resolutions assuming different possible modes. As a first result, we show a qualitative agreement of the experimental data with the simulated sequential decay. Further studies are ongoing to precisely extract the branching ratios and all the uncertainties due to the simulation parameters

Recent results on the construction of a new correlator for neutrons and charged particles and for FARCOS

    No full text
With the advent of new facilities for radioactive ion beams it is necessary to develop neutron detection systems integrated with charged-particle ones. The integration of the neutron signal, especially in the case of neutron-rich beams, becomes a mandatory requirement in order to study the property of the nuclear matter in extreme conditions. For this reason, new detectors using new materials have to be built. NArCoS (Neutron ARray for COrrelation Studies) is a project aimed at the design of a new detector based on stack of plastic scintillators, featuring both good energy and angular resolution sensitive both to neutrons and charged particles within the same detection cell. We present in this work new results on the Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) capabilities of two very compact detection systems: the 3×3×3 cm3 EJ 276+SiPM and the 3×3×3 cm3 EJ 276G+SiPM (the latter green shifted version). In addition, we compare new results about the energy calibration and resolution of the FARCOS correlator in the CHIFAR experiment performed at LNS
