With the tourism industry's recovery, there is an increased demand for outbound Chinese tourists. With Chinese tourists as an important submarket in Sabah, a better understanding of Chinese tourists' perceptions of destination tourism is crucial for development. In this study, the representative Tanjung Aru Beach in Sabah was selected as the study case, and the review content was selected through the travellers’ reviews on China's largest travel online platform - Ctrip.com, as the study sample. Through Octopus Collector 8, the text data was analyzed for word frequency, web semantics, and sentiment using the ROST CM6 tool. The results of the study found that most of the Chinese tourists at Tanjung Aru Beach gave satisfactory comments. These positive comments focused mainly on the natural landscape and resources of the beach, the services of the Shangri-La Hotel, the ease of language communication, and the local cuisine. More often than not, Chinese tourists mentioned the beach's sunsets, evening sunsets, flaming clouds, sand, cloud formations, and sea breezes. The study also found that “beach” and “sunset” were the resources that Chinese tourists recognized for the attraction, with the majority of reviews revolving around these two themes. It should be noted that Chinese tourists showed dissatisfaction with the sanitary environment and facilities at Tanjung Aru Beach. The study concludes with recommendations for management

    No full text
INTRODUCTION: During the pandemic, crisis leadership is being tested in ways the world hasn’t seen in generations, and leading through it has become a severe challenge for leadership in public health organisation. Therefore, this study aims to develop and validate a self-administered questionnaire (Crisis Leadership Questionnaire, CLQ) to assess the challenges and competencies faced and needed in crisis leadership. METHODS: The questionnaire describes the general sociodemographic data of the participant, assesses challenges in the organisation in the categories of structural (4 domain), political (3 domain), and cultural (3 domain), and also on the nine (9) competencies needed in crisis leadership. Ten (10) sociodemographic data-related questions with 90 questions (53 on the challenges and 37 on competencies) were reviewed by two experts for face validity, and exploratory factor analysis was performed, using principal axis factoring with Promax rotation, to establish the construct validity of the questionnaire. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was tested using Cronbach’s α coefficient. RESULTS: The final CLQ contained ten (10) sociodemographic questions, thirty-three (33) items focus on challenges categorized into structural (3 domains), political (2 domains), and cultural (3 domains) aspects, and twenty-two (22) items assess five key competencies required for crisis leadership. The content validity index (CVI) value is 0.96 for the challenges construct and 1.0 for the competencies construct, respectively, while the internal consistency reliability analysis (Cronbach’s alpha=> 0.6) is for all the domains. CONCLUSION: The developed questionnaire will help better understand the challenges and competencies of crisis leadership for current and future preparedness

An analysis of the Spratly Islands dispute from a neoclassical realist perspective during the Prime Minister Najib bin Razak era (2009-2018) in Malaysia

    No full text
This study discusses the dispute over the overlapping claims on the Spratly Islands during the administration of Najib Razak’s 2009-2018. The island is claimed by six countries including Malaysia. Malaysia has put its official claim since 1979 with issuance of Peta Baharu (the New Map). Since then, Malaysia has continued to strengthen its claim over the area. Malaysia has used a range of strategic moves to strengthen its position in the Spratly Islands in the face of conflicting claims. Engaging diplomatically with regional and international parties to gain support for its territorial claims has been one noteworthy tactic. In addition, Malaysia has worked to strengthen its de facto authority over these areas by fortifying its presence on important features through marine patrols and infrastructure development. But there have been a number of issues involving China and the United States of America in the area. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide light on Malaysia's strategy, particularly during the Najib Razak administration. It is critical to comprehend how Malaysia manages the situation by pursuing its national interest in the region while simultaneously keeping positive relationships with China and the United States of America. In doing so, the neo-classical realism perspective is employed to better explain the dynamics of Malaysia’s approach during Najib’s era visa-vis balancing its ties with China and the United States, without sacrificing its interest in claiming the Spratly islands

Analyzing news frames in press photography, pplying rodriguez and dimitrova’s four-level framework

    No full text
While framing theory has been widely used to analyze the textual aspects of media products, examining how issues or events are framed in standalone images or those accompanying text is less commonly explored. Rodriguez and Dimitrova suggested a four-level framework for identifying and analyzing visual frames that can be applied to study different types of visuals and mediums. The proposed framework considers the tangible components of images and the implicit meanings and cultural experiences that audiences bring to the analysis. This article aims to apply Rodriguez and Dimitrova's four levels of visual framing to analyze news frames in a press photograph about a typhoon, a domain of images with tremendous potential and challenges for scholars. The morality news frame was identified by a qualitative analysis of the examined photograph's denotative meaning, stylistic aspect, connotative meaning, and ideological aspect. This study further strengthens the significance and relevance of this visual framing analysis model in disaster framing. Conceptual consistency is reinforced and extended by revisiting and applying the proposed framework in previous research to examine images in different domains

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine asnafs’ acceptance of home financing in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach – This work developed and introduced the Maqasid theory of consumer behaviors (MTCB) to examine the effects of educational programmers, mortgage welfare, consumer justice and Islamic debt policy on receptiveness. Data analysis involving 733 respondents was conducted using partial least squares (PLS), where SmartPLS4.0 software comes into play. Findings – In the core model, the effects of the MTCB’s variables helped shape the development of asnaf home financing acceptance. Research limitations/implications – This study was based on quantitative data and geographical constraints. Practical implications – The findings provide valuable inputs for the Joint Committee Body (JCB), combining Islamic banks and State Islamic Religious Councils to develop action plans for improving the facility offered. Social implications – This work functioned as a social benchmark for improving Islamic home financing that includes asnafs’ homeownership. Originality/value – A new conceptual framework for asnaf home financing drawn from MTCB is developed in the context of asnafs’ homeownershi

An economic assessment on public well‑being for biodiversity conservation in Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia

    No full text
The economic valuation is crucial to estimate non-marketed goods, which refer to public willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation efforts in the tourism area. Both local com- munities and visitors play an important role in developing sustainable tourism and well- being. However, the information on economic valuation based on their preferences and well-being is still limited in the world heritage site Gunung Mulu National Park (GMNP). Thus, the study attempts to elucidate the WTP on how the local community and visitors value biodiversity conservation in GMNP through park entrance fees and how it relates to conservation awareness and community well-being in the area. The validated question- naira was distributed to the visitors (n = 87) and the local community (n = 99) through an online and face-to-face approach, respectively. From the study, the estimated mean WTP among the public was MYR40.61 (USD9.60) per entry, which is highly influenced by their level of attitude and experience. The level of attitude among the respondents has influenced the WTP for the existing park entrance fee. Meanwhile, there is no awareness construct that affects the WTP for increased fees among visitors and the local community. The low level of knowledge and experience of the respondents but the high level of attitude has influenced the good WTP for the cheaper park entrance fee. It is noted that certain socio- demographic factors had influenced their WTP for the offered and maximum price. It was found that the environment and social factors have significantly influenced the WTP among the public. However, the economic factor did not predict their WTP. The findings enhance the relationship between crucial social value determinants and the economy, particularly on WTP in a protected area

First report of mass mortality in hatchery-reared Sabah Pelian (Tor sp.) attributed to Aeromonas veronii in Sabah, Malaysia

    No full text
A breeding program for Sabah Pelian (Tor sp.) was initiated at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Hatchery Facility in July 2023. Fifteen Tor sp. were obtained from the Pagalan River, Tambunan, Sabah, and transported to the UMS Hatchery. After 12 days of acclimatization to the hatchery's conditions, followed by two days of heavy thundershowers, mass mortality was recorded on day 14. The goal of this study was to identify the cause of Pelian's mass mortality in the UMS Hatchery facility. The study involved the dissection of dead fish samples to assess internal organ conditions and the isolation of bacteria on microbial media. Despite normal water quality assessments, post-mortem examinations observed external skin lesions, haemorrhages and excessive mucus covering the body of the dead fish. Histopathological examination indicated a necrotizing inflammatory response in the ovarian tissue. Aeromonas veronii was isolated and identified as the causative agent through biochemical and molecular methods. Additionally, the antibiotic sensitivity test indicated varying degrees of susceptibility of A. veronii to the tested antibiotics. The bacterium showed resistance to ampicillin and erythromycin, while the remaining antibiotics exhibited sensitivity or an intermediate range of effectiveness. The two-day adverse weather prior to the mortality event was identified as the primary stress factor that likely induced the A. veronii infection, resulting in mass mortality of the Pelian. The study highlights the significance of understanding the interaction among fish, their internal microbiota and external environmental factors that may induce pathogenicity

Analysis of household consumption function based on permanent income hypothesis in Sabah, Malaysia: a conceptual framework

    Get PDF
In the past, Sabah has often been reported as Malaysia’s poorest state, with the recorded highest incidence of absolute poverty among all the other states. The consumption patterns of households in Sabah have been significantly impacted by such circumstances. This further draws light on the adverse impact on the broader economy, as low levels of spending may restrict demand for products and services, stifling economic growth. The understanding of households’ consumption functions based on the Permanent Income Hypothesis (PIH) will advance knowledge in identifying the key factors that influence the households’ spending decisions. Pointing out the scant number of past studies done within this very context, and focusing on the Sabah state in particular, further motivated this study, this paper aims to develop a conceptual framework that can estimate and examine the households’ consumption functions in Sabah. As such, the methodology of drawing upon narrative reviews from research in the past will be used in this paper to develop the conceptual framework. The result of this study built upon the framework developed will help in identifying the factors that explain the households’ consumption patterns, in particular, whether the function estimated will be consistent with the Permanent Income Hypothesis (PIH). It is hoped that the conceptual framework built will aid in providing valuable empirical insight for policymakers in designing effective policies that can uplift households that are living in poverty

A comparison of deep learning-based techniques for solving partial differential equations

    Get PDF
Obtaining the solutions of high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) seems to be difficult by utilizing the classical numerical methods. Recently, deep neural networks (DNNs) techniques have received special attentions in solving high–dimensional problems in PDEs. In this study, our quest is to investigate some newly introduced data-driven deep learning-based approaches and compare their performance in terms of their efficiency and faster training towards highdimensional PDEs. However, the comparison is carried out based on different activation functions, number of layers and gradient based optimizers. We consider some benchmark problems in our numerical experiments which includes Burgers equation, Diffusion-reaction equation and Allen-Cahn Equations
