A framework of parenting leadership styles and students achievement elements

    No full text
Parenting leadership style has an impact on student achievement. This study explores the relationship between parenting leadership styles and student achievement through the development of a comprehensive framework. This framework is developed through a thorough examination and analysis of previous studies on parental leadership style and its impact on student academic performance. By investigating various parenting leadership paradigms, including authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful styles, and their impact on student outcomes, this research aims to describe a clearer understanding of the leadership style of parents that is practiced in producing excellent students. The findings indicate that parenting leadership styles exert varying effects and influences on achievement; however, authoritative leadership style emerges as the predominant parental approach among student parents and significantly correlates with students' academic achievement. This study hopes to contribute to SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being where parenting styles can significantly impact children's socio-emotional well-being and mental health, which are critical components of overall health and well-being. Understanding the relationship between parenting leadership styles and student achievement can inform strategies to promote positive mental health outcomes among students

Transforming speech therapy for children with autism through a virtual applied behavior analysis approach

    No full text
Speech therapy is essential for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), many of whom face challenges in developing functional speech and language skills. Traditional therapy approaches require significant resources and may not be accessible to all individuals in need. This gap necessitates exploring alternative, technology-assisted methods for delivering speech therapy. Although technological tools for interventions have advanced, there is still a lack of tools specifically tailored to children with ASD that integrate evidence-based behavioral therapy principles. Hence, this study developed a Virtual Speech Therapy System (VSTS) that employs Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, particularly Discrete Trial Training (DTT), within a digital framework to provide speech therapy in the Malay language. The speech therapy is established through a text-to-speech unit, a speech-recognition unit based on the Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK), and a performance counter unit to measure progress. The VSTS passed the acceptance testing, and the speech-recognition unit demonstrated a promising percentage of accuracy and a relatively low word error rate during development, with 93.75% and 6.25%, respectively. It also showed a higher recognition rate for words with distinct phonetic compositions. This study contributes to the educational development of children with ASD, particularly in verbal communication through assistive technology

Phylogenetic and morphological analyses delimit and diagnose, respectively, a new population of a karst-dwelling Cyrtodactylus from extreme northern Thailand. The new species, Cyrtodactylus phamiensis sp. nov., of the chauquangensis group inhabits karst caves and outcroppings and karst vegetation in the vicinity of Pha Mi Village in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Within the chauquangensis group, Cyrtodactylus phamiensis sp. nov. is the earliest diverging species of a strongly supported clade composed of the granite-dwelling C. doisuthep and the karst-dwelling sister species Cyrtodactylus sp. 6 and C. erythrops. The nearly continuous karstic habitat between the type locality of Cyrtodactylus phamiensis sp. nov. and its close relatives Cyrtodactylus sp. 6 and C. erythrops, extends for approximately 200 km along the border region of Thailand and the eastern limit of the Shan Plateau of Myanmar. Further exploration of this region, especially the entire eastern ~ 95% of the Shan Plateau, will undoubtably recover new populations whose species status will need evaluation. As in all other countries of Indochina and northern Sundaland, the continual discovery of new karst-dwelling populations of Cyrtodactylus shows no signs of tapering off, even in relatively well-collected areas. This only highlights the conservation priority that these unique karstic landscapes still lack on a large scale across all of Asi

    Get PDF
Suicide is a serious and curable public health issue that is alarming towards early adults like university students who are undergoing personal and social phase changes and pressures. This study investigates the influence of depression and loneliness on the suicidal behaviour of public university students in Malaysia. The quantitative study involved 406 public university students in Malaysia, including early teens aged 20 years and below and adults aged 40 years and above. Three instruments were used: Suicide Behaviours Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3. Data analysis involves examining basic statistical information. For this study, a stratified and proportional random selection method was used. The results indicated that public university students in Malaysia generally exhibited minimal levels of depression, loneliness, and suicidal behaviour. Depression and loneliness emerged as significant positive predictors influencing suicidal behaviour, accounting for 49.3% of the variance, while loneliness contributed to 0.3%. These nonsignificant findings suggest that overall, the mental well-being of the students is good. The study also highlights the role of cultural and societal factors unique to Malaysia in promoting positive mental health outcomes

A novel and refined contactless user feedback system for immediate on-site response collection

This paper introduces a Contactless User Feedback System (CUFS) that provides an innovative solution for capturing user feedback through hand gestures. It comprises a User Feedback Device (UFD), a mobile application, and a cloud database. The CUFS operates through a structured sequence, guiding users through a series of questions displayed on an LCD. Using the Pi Camera V2 for contactless hand shape capture, users can express feedback through recognized hand signs. A live video feed enhances user accuracy, while secure data transmission to a database ensures comprehensive feedback collection, including timestamp, date, location, and a unique identifier. A mobile application offers real-time oversight for administrators, presenting facility status insights, data validation outcomes, and customization options for predefined feedback categories. This study also identifies and strategically addresses challenges in image quality, responsiveness, and data validation to enhance the CUFS's overall performance. Innovations include optimized lighting for superior image quality, a parallel multi-threading approach for improved responsiveness, and a data validation mechanism on the server side. The refined CUFS demonstrates recognition accuracies consistently surpassing 93%, validating the effectiveness of these improvements. This paper presents a novel and refined CUFS that combines hardware and software components, contributing significantly to the advancement of contactless human-computer interaction and Internet of Thingsbased systems

A content analysis of low yat online discussion forums on Malaysian vernacular schools

    Get PDF
Vernacular schools in Malaysia, while only operating at the primary school level, have had a turbulent existence. Recently, the constitutional legitimacy of these schools was questioned through legal suits brought about by private citizens as well as non-governmental organisations and associations. These suits illuminate the discourses that surround vernacular schools in Malaysia. A discursive space where language use is worth examining is the digital realm, where there is an extent of openness afforded to users to communicate their feelings or views. To this end, three online discussion forums from Low Yat were examined. Posts that had written comments regarding vernacular schools were included. Through qualitative content analysis, six themes were yielded. They revealed perspectives that supported the abolishment of vernacular schools; however, there were also those who presented a contrastive perspective, mainly due to the negative views held against national schools and the educational system. From these posts, stereotypes associated with particular ethnic groups became evident. There were also disagreements towards the purpose and quality of different types of schools. All these indicate how public discourse regarding vernacular schools is complex, as seen through history and compounded by individual social practices

There is a shortage of research investigating the link between the Big Five Personalities and Job Performance as mediated by Critical Thinking Abilities among the Assistants Managers of the Oil Palm Plantations Companies in Sabah particularly. Critical Thinking is a vital skill in the workplace. Employers value Assistant Managers who can think critically because it allows them to analyse situations, make informed decisions, solve problems effectively, and adapt to new challenges. Critical Thinking also helps Assistant Managers evaluate information, consider different perspectives, and communicate ideas clearly. Overall, Assistant Mangers with strong Critical Thinking Abilities would increase productivity, innovation and career success in the workplace. Therefore, Assistants Managers of the Oil Palm Plantations Companies in Sabah particularly must be a critical thinker whose Critical Thinking Abilities should have been enhanced via various Human Capital Management including Learning, Training and Development to retain them as for strategic succession plan and to sustain company’s long-term goals .The aim of the current research is to consider the influence of the Big Five Personalities on Job Performance through Critical Thinking Abilities via Quantitative approach. The 150 respondents are Assistant Managers who are working presently in a major Oil Palm Plantations Companies in Sabah. Data collection via distribution of the questionnaires. This paper proposes the conceptual framework towards the influential of Big Five Personalities on Job Performance mediated by Assistant Managers Critical Thinking Abilities. Assistant Managers’ Personalities is proposed to be measured in terms of Openness to Experience (O), Conscientiousness (C), Extraversion (E), Agreeableness (A), Neuroticism (N) while Job Performance that is proposed to be measured by Task Performance and Contextual Performance. Critical Thinking Abilities is proposed to be measured by wide-ranging critical thinking skills viz Analysis, Inference, Evaluation and Reasoning. Overall results (Appendix 1) show, no significant relationships between individual Independent Variables (O, C, E, A, N) and the Dependent Variable (DV) Job Performance. All hypotheses (H1-H5) regarding the effect on DV were not supported (p-value > 0.05). Significant relationships between some Independent Variables (IV) the Big Five Personalities and the Mediating Variable (MV), Critical Thinking Abilities (CTA). Several hypotheses (H6, H8, H11-H14, H16) regarding the effect on CTA were supported (p-value < 0.05). The model including all IV is significant for both DV and CTA. Hypotheses H11, H12, H13, H14, H15, and H16 all show a significant relationship between the combination of Independent Variables and their respective Dependent Variables. Probably for conclusion, while the individual Independent Variables might not have a strong enough effect on the Job Performance being Dependent Variable (DV) on their own, the combined effect of these variables along with other factors not included in the model is statistically significant for both DV and CTA. For further insights, it would be helpful to see the actual values of the regression weights and beta coefficients. It provides the direction and strength of the individual relationships. In other note, level of work experiences might have some effect to the results as well. It is hoped that the proposed conceptual framework may contribute to the body of knowledge as additional references for scholars. Most importantly, it is hoped that, enable with time all practitioners in various field to identify important factors that most influential Assistant Managers from Gen X, Y and Z to gain motivation on their Big Five Personalities and enhance their Critical Thinking Abilities for high Job Performance in their respective area of responsibilities in the work place
