Inventory of non-volant small mammals in the mixed-land use habitats at Pusat Penyelidikan Pertanian Tun Razak, Jerantut, Pahang
The extensive use of land for agriculture has significantly influenced the distribution and diversity of wild species, including small mammals. From 22nd February to 17th March 2023, an inventory was conducted to identify the diversity and bait preferences of non-volant small mammals across three localities which are oil palm, orchard and forest area at Pusat Penyelidikan Pertanian Tun Razak (PPPTR), Jerantut, Pahang. A total of 105 individuals representing three families and six species of the orders Rodentia and Scandentia were trapped and identified. Out of this, four species from 26 individuals were caught in the oil palm area, six species from 36 individuals in the orchard, and five species from 43 individuals in the forest area. Rattus tiomanicus was the most abundant species recorded at PPPTR. The Shannon-Wiener Index was calculated and compared, showing that the forest area (H = 1.391) had a greater diversity value than the oil palm (H = 1.293) and orchard (H = 1.367). Simpson's Diversity Index also revealed that the forest area (0.7258) had a higher index value than the oil palm (0.7012) and orchard (0.6852), indicating that the forest area has better habitat suitability for small mammals. The analysis of bait preferences revealed that non-volant small mammals at PPPTR showed a strong preference for oil palm loose fruit, followed by bananas, likely due to dietary habits and food availability in the area. In conclusion, this inventory provides fundamental data on non-volant small mammal diversity in the mixed-land use habitats at PPPTR and offers valuable insights for small mammals’ conservation and agricultural pest management strategies

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is crucial in fostering innovation and economic development. Despite various government initiatives in Malaysia, students’ interest and participation in STEM fields remain a concern, particularly in rural areas. This paper assesses secondary students’ awareness toward STEM education, analyzing the factors influencing their engagement, including interest in Science, Mathematics, Technology & Engineering, and English proficiency. The study conducted research designed a cross-sectional adapted survey on STEM awareness among 496 secondary students in Tawau, Sabah, which is considered a rural area. The findings reveal that Science awareness has the highest impact on STEM engagement, followed by Technology & Engineering, Mathematics, and English proficiency. Mathematics anxiety is a significant barrier to STEM participation, affecting students’ confidence in pursuing STEM-related careers. The study also high- lights geographical and socioeconomic disparities, with rural students havingAQ2 lower exposure to quality STEM resources compared to their urban counterparts. To enhance STEM awareness and participation, targeted interventions, such as hands-on STEM learning, improved Mathematics instruction, career guidance, and equitable access to resources, are necessary. These insights contribute to shaping educational policies and strategies to bridge the STEM engagement gap and prepare students for future STEM careers

A study on microfluidic desalination using short-chain fatty acid by directional solvent extraction in a serpentine micromixer
Water shortage is an imminent issue in the foreseeable future while thermal desalination techniques are energy intensive. This study investigates a membrane-less low temperature technique known as directional solvent extraction (DSE) desalination in a serpentine microchannel at 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65 °C. Two lower fatty acids, heptanoic acid (HeptA) and nonanoic acid (NonA) were used as the solvents to recover water from a 35000 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS) seawater at 2, 3, 4 and 5 organic to aqueous flowrate ratios (O: aq). Custom-made polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) – glass microfluidic device is fabricated via direct writing lithography with depth and length of 100 µm and 161 mm respectively while the width is varied from 400 - 800 µm. Droplets were generated during the extraction process to maximize diffusion by using a 90° T-junction where the organic solvent is the continuous phase and seawater is the dispersed phase. A maximum product water yield, Yw of 4 % v/v and 1.9 % v/v is achieved by HeptA and NonA respectively. The product water recovered from HeptA and NonA has salinity as low as 0.01% and 0.08%, respectively. The HeptA system produces water containing higher solvent residuals than the NonA system. HeptA is a better solvent as it can extract approximately two times more water than NonA under the same operating conditions. Both solvents are reusable
Influence of short-duration densification on the temperature profile of cross-laminated timber during an open burning test
This study investigated the fire performance of cross-laminated timber (CLT) manufactured from the densified laminas of Paraserianthes falcataria, a fast-growing timber species. The aim of the study was to provide insights into the influence of short-duration densification on the thermal behavior of CLT during open burning, where compression ratios (40%, 50%, 60%) were applied. The outcomes indicated that higher compression ratios resulted in the formation of an insulating char layer that delayed the charring rate and enhanced the fire resistance of CLT. Notably, a 50% compression ratio was found to be optimal to achieve the desirable charring rate. The study further investigated the temperature-profile dynamics, emphasizing the impact of densification on the dynamic temperature changes in the CLT during a fire. The findings also highlighted the influence of the adhesive characteristics on the charring rate and temperature dynamics of the CLT, contributing to a deeper understanding of ways to produce CLT with desirable Physico mechanical properties and excellent structural integrit

The influence of menu diversity, price perception, social media on repurchase interest through customer satisfaction of msmes in gado-gado, ketoprak, karedok traditional foods in south Tangerang, Indonesia
This study examines the influence of menu diversity, price perception, and social media on repurchase interest, mediated by customer satisfaction, among traditional food MSMEs specializing in Gado-Gado, Ketoprak, and Karedok in South Tangerang. Primary data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 85 respondents, selected using purposive sampling based on their frequency of purchasing from these MSMEs. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) with the Smart PLS 3.0 application. The results indicated that, partially, menu diversity and customer satisfaction significantly affect repurchase interest. Social media positively and significantly influences both customer satisfaction and repurchase interest. However, price perception insignificantly impacts customer satisfaction, though it does affect repurchase interest. Interestingly, while menu diversity enhances customer satisfaction, it does not directly influence repurchase interest. These findings highlight the complex interplay of factors driving repurchase behavior and provide valuable insights for MSMEs aiming to enhance customer retention and satisfaction through strategic menu offerings, social media engagement, and competitive pricin
Machine learning based return prediction for digital financial portfolios
With the continuous growth of the national economy and the expansion of market demand, traditional finance has gradually turned to digital transformation, and the emergence of digital finance has brought new breakthroughs to the economy. With the continuous development of the times, in order to meet the needs of the market, digital finance and commercial investment are constantly integrated. Therefore, this paper selects the returns and risks of digital financial investment as the research topic and predicts the investment returns of the five major online banks by analyzing the digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system. The machine learning algorithm is introduced to optimize the digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system. The investment return rate is predicted by the optimized digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system and then compared with the actual investment return rate. The experimental results show that the predicted value of the traditional digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system for the online bank financial management return rate differs from the actual return rate by 1%-2%, while the predicted value range of the digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system for the online bank financial management return rate is the same as the fluctuation range of the actual return rate. From the experimental data, it can be seen that the digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system based on machine learning can effectively improve the prediction ability of the digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system, making the predicted value closer to the actual value and increasing the reliability of the prediction. This paper provides reference value for the optimization and improvement of the digital financial portfolio investment return prediction system and contributes to the development of digital finance
