Musicology and/as propaganda in the nationalist side during the Spanish Civil War
When the Spanish Civil War started, Catalan musicologist and priest Higini Anglés had a solid international prestige as a specialist in medieval music. Anglés fled Barcelona in the summer of 1936 to escape anti-clerical violence and settled temporarily in Munich. As Franco’s victory in the war started to become more certain, Anglés engaged in correspondence with another priest-musicologist, Nemesio Otaño—who had been put in charge of musical policy on the Francoist side—with a view to preparing for his return to Spain under the new regime. This chapter will explore this correspondence, analyzing what it reveals about the propaganda uses that the Francoist side envisaged for musicology—particularly concerning early music—as well as Anglés’s conflicted relationship with such uses
Challenges in and opportunities for individualising diabetes technology: a position statement by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Diabetes Technology Working Group
From fingerstick blood glucose monitoring and mechanical insulin pens in the 1970s to modern automated insulin delivery systems, rapidly progressing advances in diabetes technology are transforming management options for people with diabetes, particularly those with type 1 diabetes but also, increasingly, people with type 2 diabetes. However, access to life-changing diabetes technologies is neither uniform nor universally covered, and there is no one size fits all approach. In this position statement, we emphasise to healthcare professionals the importance of supporting individuals with diabetes to access and use the right diabetes technology according to personal needs, capabilities and preferences. In doing so, we highlight the equal importance of avoiding disparities in the provision of diabetes technology by challenging preconceived barriers, which can be overcome with education and determination. We also make a series of suggestions for action to advance the more widespread adoption of diabetes technology while minimising the ‘digital divide’
Rethinking ocean harmscapes through the lens of southern blue criminology
This chapter introduces southern blue criminology, a novel theoretical framework that extends traditional criminological analysis to encompass the environmental harms affecting the world’s oceans, particularly from a Global South perspective. This approach critiques crime-centric analysis and expands upon the concept of “harmscapes”—areas significantly impacted by ecological damage—by integrating socioeconomic and cultural contexts often overlooked by prevailing enforcement paradigms developed in the Global North. Through a critical review of existing criminological theories and maritime enforcement practices, this chapter highlights the inadequacies of current approaches that fail to account for the transnational and complex nature of oceanic harms. Southern blue criminology is proposed through four integrative perspectives: shifting from a crime-centric view to embracing a broader conception of ocean harmscapes; moving beyond state-centric responses to foster whole-of-society involvement including nonstate actors; transcending Western-centric governance models in favor of contextdependent strategies that respect local knowledges and practices; and expanding the analytical frame from human-centric approaches to include human-nonhuman assemblages, recognizing the ocean as an active participant in ecological and social interactions. The framework aims to foster more effective and sustainable management of marine environments, proposing a shift from a punitive focus to a more comprehensive, preventive, and rest orative approach. Using the Gulf of Guinea as a case study, this chapter illustrates how these principles can address the complex ecological, socioeconomic, and governance challenges inherent in transnational maritime environmental harms. The implications of this research are significant, suggesting a transformative shift in policies to better address the intricate web of factors contributing to maritime environmental crimes and to enhance global ecological justice
Enhancing Teacher Engagement and Expanding Staff Opportunities
The report begins by outlining the fundamental, typically systemic challenges underlying limited staff engagement in development opportunities. It then continues with recommendations of measures that institutions can take to address and potentially overcome these challenges. These recommendations are illustrated with practice examples from the group members, though the group is very mindful of the fact that in many institutional and national contexts, increased engagement in staff development might require a broader cultural shift rather than single measures or quick fixes, since a lack of parity of esteem between teaching and other higher education missions was found to be the single greatest reason for limited interest in staff development for learning and teaching. The group thus urges institutions to adopt a sound and context-sensitive ecosystem of approaches aimed at increasing this parity of esteem, and hopes that this report may be useful in that process

Mentoring scheme as a driver of equality, diversity and inclusion in health professions education and research
Mentoring is one of the important modalities that are known to enhance professional development of staff, including those who engage in teaching and learning of Health Professions in Higher Education as well as research of patients-focused subjects. However, while multiple mentoring schemes are available at University level, the impact they bring to the local community of staff is often unclear. With an aim to identify the current status of mentoring within School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, University of Glasgow, the Athena Swan-led Aspiration and Development Working Group has conducted a reflective study. We analysed benefits of the existing mentoring schemes, as well as challenges met by staff in the early stages of career in the Learning, Teaching and Scholarship and the Research and Teaching tracks. Reflection was also made on the equality, diversity and inclusion of Postgraduate Research students and LGBTQ+ members of the community. We have found that there was a limited uptake despite benefits, and that there were multiple causes for this, which was beyond a lack of time. This has led to a proposal of a new mentoring scheme that focuses on local needs and the process that centres more favourably to the prospective mentees, with an integrated monitoring platform of the scheme, which supports sustainability. We find that, for provision of a meaningful mentoring, careful design and implementation based on the EDI ethos is essential

This chapters offers a substantive historical account of the role of managers in the music industries, spanning Duke Ellington to Last Dinner Party. It seeks to offer a corrective to conventional narratives around the role, teasing out a more nuanced definition and understanding of how the role has evolved in relation to the major social, political and technological changes in the industries more generally. In doing so, it highlights the increasing professionalism and scope of the role, while noting that many of the fundamental difficulties underpinning it (notably the relationships between artists and managers, wider economic circumstances, precarity and contracts) remain, to some extent, the same
Machine learning-based estimation of ripple losses in high temperature superconductors for cryo-electric aviation applications
Losses generated by high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes are a source of heat load in the powertrain of superconducting driven electric aircraft. This study employs machine learning (ML) techniques to estimate ripple losses of HTS tapes, which occur on the DC side of the powertrain and place notable demands on the cryogenic cooling system. Ripple losses generated by 6, 12, and 24 pole (pulse) rectifications were investigated under switching frequencies of typical AC/DC converters in electric aircraft. Fast, data driven estimation of ripple losses in the HTS tapes are introduced to overcome the high computational cost of FEM-based methods. Four ML techniques, Gaussian process regression (GPR), decision tree (DT), ensemble tree (ENS), and artificial neural network (ANN), are assessed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the best method. As current ripple may propagate through the full drivetrain, the choice of ML technique is a technical requirement, and rapid, tape level loss prediction is a primary step for condition monitoring and health assessment of HTS devices in cryo-electric aircraft. Training data were generated using a validated 2D H-formulation finite element method (FEM)-based model developed in COMSOL Multiphysics, which included all metallic sublayers to account for their high frequency effects. Results showed GPR achieves the highest accuracy, with a mean relative error of 1.8% and goodness of fit percentage value of 99.997%. The model is then updated to a two tape stack model to show the generalizability of the proposed GPR model, also showing high accuracy results. ML techniques reduced computation time dramatically compared with FEM simulation, with test times between 51 ms and 139 ms for the full data range, compared to 10–30 minutes for only the frequency range data
The updated global burden of chronic kidney disease: one death every 20 seconds
In 2024, Global Burden of Disease (GBD) updated the forecast of global cause-specific age-standardized death rates. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was forecast to increase by over 30% from 2022, while stroke and ischaemic heart disease would decrease by more than 40%. In western Europe, CKD would become the third cause of death by 2050. While proactive primary prevention has been key to addressing the burden of stroke and ischaemic heart disease, its role in CKD has been often neglected. In 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) produced documents emphasizing maintenance of kidney health and GBD updated the global epidemiology estimates for CKD and kidney replacement therapy (KRT). The new data support the previous estimate that there are 850 million people with kidney disease globally, of whom 4.6 million are on KRT, and 1.5 million people annually (one every 20 seconds) die from CKD. In Europe, an estimated 93.1 million adults have CKD, of whom 750 000 are on KRT, and 210 000 people (one every 2.5 minutes) die from CKD. Of relevance for public health planning, diabetes and hypertension accounted for ≤ 30% of prevalent KRT in Europe. GBD estimates extend data currently available through the European Renal Association (ERA) Registry by including additional countries where prevalence of KRT is high: Germany, for example, is home to over 77 000 people on KRT. Overall, these updated data confirm the severity of the global and European CKD burden and call for urgent action to develop novel strategies that expand beyond screening, early diagnosis and treatment of CKD to encompass also proactive primary prevention
Reversible phosphorylation of NPH3/RPT2-like proteins regulates phototropin receptor signaling
Phototropin receptor kinases (phot1 and phot2) enhance photosynthesis by coordinating light responses such as phototropism and chloroplast repositioning under low blue light conditions. These processes rely on NON-PHOTOTROPIC HYPOCOTYL 3 (NPH3)/ROOT PHOTOTROPISM 2-like (NRL) proteins. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) NRL protein NPH3 is phosphorylated by phot1 at S744, a modification that alters its localization and promotes hypocotyl phototropism. Although reversible phosphorylation of S744 is necessary for reassembling an active phot1–NPH3 complex at the plasma membrane, the mechanisms driving NPH3 dephosphorylation remain unclear. Here, we show that clade L TYPE 2C PROTEIN PHOSPHATASES (PP2C19 and PP2C35) regulate S744 phosphorylation and NPH3 function. Mutants lacking PP2C19 exhibit sustained S744 phosphorylation and reduced phototropism, with greater defects observed in pp2c19 pp2c35 double mutants, indicating functional redundancy between these phosphatases. Moreover, clade L pp2c mutants display altered RPT2 phosphorylation and abundance and modulate the phosphorylation status of NRL PROTEIN FOR CHLOROPLAST MOVEMENT 1 (NCH1), suggesting broader regulatory control over phot1–NRL targets. Consistent with this, phototropin-dependent chloroplast accumulation is impaired in both Arabidopsis and Marchantia pp2c19 mutants. These findings identify clade L PP2Cs as key regulators of auxin-dependent (phototropism) and auxin-independent (chloroplast accumulation movement) light responses which, together with their additional role in regulating hypocotyl gravitropism, are particularly important for seedling emergence and establishment from beneath the soil surface
