British archaeology in the 21st century: an introduction
In 1903, while clearing the accumulated sediments out of Gough’s Cave in Somerset, a near-complete skeleton was encountered. It was not archaeologists doing the work, but since the cave had already produced many ancient finds they realised that these bones were very old. The remains were kept, and when studied revealed that they were the remains of a young adult male who had been carefully buried in the cave – the individual subsequently became known as ‘Cheddar Man’. Later in the twentieth century, the bones were subject to radiocarbon dating which indicated that they were approximately 9000 years old, dating to the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), making Cheddar Man one of the oldest near-complete skeletons from Britain. However, it was work in the twenty-first century which completely changed our view of this individual from merely old to unexpected. When his DNA was analysed it was revealed that it was very likely that he had blue/green eyes, dark hair and dark-to-black skin (Brace et al. 2019). This was an exciting new discovery, because archaeologists had assumed that people living in northern Europe after the last Ice Age would have adapted to the climate by having pale skin in order to absorb more UV light and thus produce more vitamin D. The new study had revealed we had to completely rethink our previously held assumptions about people (and race) in the distant past
Peano-Meander Curve Based Microwave Array Sensor For Nondestructive Testing of CFRP Composites
In this paper a novel Peano-Meander curve-based microwave array sensor is designed for Non-destructive Testing (NDT) of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) based composites. The proposed array sensor is designed by making use of affordable Taconic TLY-5 material. Moreover, the transmission coefficient (S21) response and electric field distribution of this sensor are analyzed to examine the performance of this sensor. The suggested sensor functions as a bandstop and bandpass filter in the presence and absence of cracks, holes or deformation on the surface of Sample Under Test (SUT). A fringing field sensing capacitor (FFSC) serves as a “sensing pad” in the proposed Peano-Meander curve-based unit sensor, which contacts directly with the SUT to sense surface cracks. The designed sensor can detect the minimum crack size of 0.5 mm while operating in the frequency range of 0. 2 5 - 2. 7 5 G H z. This sensor may be used to identify surface cracks to improve the safety and integrity of crucial infrastructure, such as bridges, pipelines, and airplanes

Walker and Walker: The Law of Evidence in Scotland. 6th Edition
Walker and Walker The Law of Evidence in Scotland is a comprehensive and detailed examination of the law of evidence in the broadest of civil and criminal contexts. The emphasis is upon rigorous examination of the issues affecting all who work with the law of evidence whether in court, chamber practice or legal education.
The Sixth Edition has been updated to reflect recent case law and the latest developments in practice including:
- Ongoing significant developments in the law of corroboration by distress and res gestae and de recenti statements, notably in Lord Advocate's References Nos 1, 2 and 3 of 2023.
- Ongoing significant developments in the Moorov doctrine, including the decision in Duthie v HM Advocate 2021 JC 207.
- Legal professional privilege and purported statutory overrides, as in Scottish Legal Complaints Commission v Murray 2023 SC 10.
This title remains the leading authority on the law of evidence in Scotland and is an essential companion for criminal lawyers, advocates, judges and students
The Jim Crow railroad bildungsroman
In this article I explore the interrelationship between the Jim Crow railroad car and the bildungsroman in early twentieth-century African American fiction. My article pairs James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man with Langston Hughes’s Not Without Laughter to make the argument that both authors understand anti-Black racism as infrastructural, a circulation system that is maintained through infrastructures such as the railroad. I argue that these novels understand the bildungsroman as a narrative infrastructure that is involved in the twinned projects of nationalist consolidation and anti-Black violence. In taking this line of critique, I position both Johnson and Hughes as anticipating and reorganising much of the contemporary literary theory that has coalesced around critical infrastructure studies, while also providing an account of an understudied aspect of the modern African American novel more generally
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Oral History
The Bloomsbury Handbook of Oral History is a comprehensive examination of oral history which addresses a wide range of practitioners, from beginning students to graduate students and established scholars, community and freelance practitioners in the field, and those from other fields and disciplines interested in oral history. The purpose of the book is to provide a broad range of readers with:
* An advanced introduction into and overview of the field; * Cutting-edge reflections on core themes in the field; and * Global comparative perspectives on oral history theory and practice
The Handbook is arranged in five thematic Parts: Creating Interviews, Interpreting Oral Histories, Making Histories, Advocacy & Empowerment, and Big Questions & Future Directions. Each chapter documents the state-of-the-art in a particular subject area and surveys the international historiography and current debates. Each chapter concludes with a brief outlook of potential future developments in the field.
With chapter authors from every region of the oral history world - North America, South America, Oceania, Africa, Asia and Europe - and each author making use of examples and scholarship from across the global field of oral history, this volume represents the first truly international handbook of oral history
