Subaltern critical biographies: accounts on managing and navigating marginality and scarcity in Carolina Maria de Jesus's diaries

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to produce a critical biography of Carolina Marcia de Jesus, illustrating how marginalised groups – specifically Black Brazilian women – can challenge management and accounting as a social practice to resist and navigate oppressive systems. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use a critical biographical approach to analyse the book Child of the Dark: The Diary of Carolina Maria de Jesus (Quarto de Despejo: Diário de uma Favelada). The book reveals the rise of favelas and the widespread social exclusion of the time (re)produced by Management and Accounting Practices. Findings – The findings illustrate how a black Brazilian woman critiques marginalisation processes through the lens of surviving the favela’s problematic context. To survive in this “garbage dump” context, Carolina Maria de Jesus develops forms to manage and account for hunger, resource scarcity and emotional toll, as well as manage and account for subsistence as a critical view on marginality. Originality/value – This critical biography contributes to the existing literature by illustrating how the experiences of a black, impoverished Latin American woman contest capitalist ideological discourses and practices through subalternised Management and Accounting Practices. The authors also present an alternative Management and Accounting framework that illuminates the dynamics of scarcity and inequality, moving beyond financialised notions of wealth accumulation

Transition metal (II) coordination chemistry ligated by a new coplanar tridentate ligand, 2,6-Bis(5-isopropyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine

Transition metal (II) complexes stabilized by 2,6-di(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine as a novel coplanar tridentate nitrogen-donor ligand have been reported for their unusual structures and photoluminescent properties. In this work, the ligand 2,6-bis(5-isopropyl-1H-pyrazole-3-yl)pyridine (denoted as L) and its transition metal (II) halogenido complexes viz [ZnCl2(L)] (1), [ZnBr2(L)] (2), [CuCl2(L)] (3), and [CuCl(L)(thf)](PF6) (4) were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray crystal analysis. Its structures contained N–H groups in its pyrazole rings and hydrogen bonds between these N–H donors and the coordinated halogenide ions and lattice solvent molecules. Tautomers between 3-pyridyl and 5-pyridyl substitutes were also observed. In L, the N–H group at the pyrazole nitrogen was located adjacent to the pyridine ring to form hydrogen bonds with adjacent pyrazoles. However, on complexation, the H atoms at the pyrazole nitrogens are shifted remotely to the pyridine. The zinc (II) complexes [ZnCl2(L)] (1) and [ZnBr2(L)] (2) possessed distorted trigonal pyramidal structures in the solid state. By comparison, the copper (II) complexes [CuCl2(L)] (3) and [CuCl(L)(thf)](PF6) (4) adopted square pyramidal geometry with a Jahn–Teller distortion resulting from their d9 electron configurations

Empathy and the Equality Act 2010 in cases on religion or belief

    No full text
This paper explores recent judicial approaches in cases under the Equality Act 2010 involving the manifestation by employees of protected beliefs, including gender critical beliefs. The paper argues that empathy, understood as perspective-taking, ought to guide decision-makers in the adjudication of cases involving manifestations of religion or belief and competing equality interests. It further argues that whilst recent judicial interpretations of direct discrimination in religion or belief cases disrupt traditional understandings of direct discrimination, they provide the opportunity to engage in an empathic approach to decision-making which is jurisprudentially sound. Despite this potential, the paper identifies concerns in relation to the practical application of this new trend in the jurisprudence and contends that some of these concerns could effectively be addressed by legislative intervention which would encourage the development of clear jurisprudence to aid litigants and the development of social norms for guiding behaviours in this contested field

Modulation-assisted time-delay interferometric ranging for LISA

    Get PDF
LISA represents the next frontier in gravitational-wave astronomy, targeting the detection of millihertz gravitational signals. Central to LISA’s operation is the nanosecond-precision estimation of the light travel times (LTTs) between its constituent spacecraft. Precise LTT estimates are critical for suppressing dominant laser noise with time-delay interferometry (TDI) and ensuring the required sensitivity to gravitational-wave signals. The baseline method is to modulate a pseudorandom noise (PRN) code on the laser beams exchanged between the spacecraft. Time-delay interferometric ranging (TDIR) was proposed as a simpler alternative LTT estimation method. TDIR LTT estimates are chosen to minimize the TDI residual noise over the full LISA frequency band. TDIR can be used in case of PRN failure, or to calibrate the biases of the PRN method. In this study, we introduce modulation-assisted TDIR (MATDIR), an enhanced variant of TDIR that significantly improves LTT estimation precision and resilience. MATDIR achieves this by modulating the laser phase at specific frequencies, close to 1 Hz, thereby artificially elevating the laser phase content relative to secondary, unsuppressed noises. This modulation strategy not only enhances the signal-to-noise ratio for TDIR but also mitigates the impact of gravitational-wave signals and instrumental artifacts, enabling more reliable LTT estimates with reduced integration times. We develop the theoretical framework of MATDIR, incorporating the full constellation of three spacecraft, laser locking, and multiple Michelson TDI combinations. Analytical predictions, confirmed by numerical simulations, indicate that MATDIR can achieve LTT estimates comparable to the 1 meter-rms at 4 Hz of the PRN-based baseline method. We therefore suggest that the possibility to modulate lasers is added to the laser system requirements of LISA

(Re)Evaluating recent macroeconomic policy in the US

    Get PDF
We build and estimate a small-scale DSGE model of the US, where policy is described as the strategic interaction between monetary and fiscal policy makers following targeting rules. We use this model to analyse the two episodes where interest rates hit their zero lower bound (ZLB). We find that changing fiscal policy objectives, adopting suitably designed fiscal packages or a temporary price level target could have generated a partial lift-off from the ZLB following the financial crisis. However, under the latter two devices we would have returned to the ZLB. We find that the duration of the ZLB of 2020 was two quarters too long, and the Trump-Biden fiscal stimulus was inflationary, but even taken together, these factors do not wholly explain the subsequent hike in inflation, which instead is predominantly due to the lingering effects of Covid-era shocks

How can communication about plant-based foods support sustainable food system transformation? Nine recommendations for government, industry and citizens

    Get PDF
Purpose of Review: Immediate and widespread action is necessary to minimise the harmful consequences of the current food system. Mainstream omnivore diets contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. Therefore, switching to a more sustainable, plant-based diet is necessary for reducing the adverse effects of the current food system. Communication can play a key role in transitions towards sustainable eating behaviour. This paper will explore how communication about plant-based foods can be used most effectively across three sources: (1) government, (2) food industry and (3) citizens. Recent Findings: Currently, the food industry drives the majority of communication about plant-based foods. Governments seldom communicate about plant-based foods in consumer-facing guidelines, with non-governmental and intergovernmental organisations instead filling the gap. Citizens are then exposed to, and seem to internalise, commercial communication about plant-based foods. This communication favours traditional, meat-centric norms and positions plant-based foods as an unenjoyable, inaccessible and expensive alternative to meat and dairy products. Summary: We present 9 recommendations to improve communication about plant-based foods to support more widespread adoption of sustainable diets. These recommendations are tailored to different sources of communication but centre around three main ideals, namely to make communication about plant-based foods (1) consistent, (2) reward-focused and (3) practical. These recommendations can help to tackle misconceptions about plant-based foods and encourage the widespread adoption of sustainable diets that is necessary for human and planetary health

Uncovering the impact of digital technologies on strategising: evidence from a systematic literature review

    Get PDF
Adopting digital technologies in different organizations has become a trend over the last decade, yet our understanding regarding impact of digital technologies on strategising needs to be more cohesive. This paper reviews existing research on how digital transformation intersects with strategic management to adress this gap. Specifically, the aim is to explore how the digital context changes strategising. Based on a systematic review of empirical evidence from 163 journal papers, we showcased the manifestation of strategising in the digital age in terms of strategic practitioners, practices and praxis. By consolidating these findings, a typology of strategic actions in the digital age is developed and discussed, highlighting the interplay among changes in strategy-as-practice parameters. This framework clarifies in strategic scenarios of digital transformation and identifies various strategic directions and actions. Overall, we argue that although digital transformation has created additional strategic options, it has yet to change the underlying assumptions of strategising in firms
