    UK real world data of Radium-223-dichloride in metastatic prostate cancer

    Objectives: To evaluate the treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with radium-223 dichloride in the UK. Methods: Patients initiating treatment with radium-223 from 1 September 2017 to 1 September 2019 in 15 UK oncology centres were included. Demographics, treatment, clinical, biochemical, and outcome data were collected prospectively. Quality of life data were obtained using analgesic scores and components of the Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy – Prostate (FACT-P) questionnaire. Results: A total of 550 consecutive, evaluable patients were included. The most common prior therapy for mCRPC was enzalutamide. At final analysis, after a median follow-up of 13.3 months, 55% of patients had completed six cycles of treatment. Median overall survival was 13.7 months (95% confidence interval, 12.6–14.8 months). Poor performance status, prior use of docetaxel in the metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) setting, number of lines of prior treatment, and abnormal platelet count were independent variables associated with poor prognosis. Adverse events led to treatment discontinuation in 5.5% of patients. WHO analgesic scores and FACT-P questionnaire scores did not significantly change after treatment administration. Conclusion: The National Radium-223 Dichloride Audit was the first and largest multicentre prospective analysis of treatment patterns, outcomes, and quality of life data in patients treated with radium-223 in the UK. Radium-223 can be administered safely to patients previously treated with other life-prolonging therapies. Efficacy and safety data compare favourably with clinical trial and other real-world data. Our results suggest that its use earlier in the treatment pathway is associated with longer survival

    Do changes in autonomous motivation mediate the effect of the EuroFIT programme on physical activity?

    Gender-sensitized approaches to health behaviour change in sports settings have generated positive health outcomes and health behaviours, but theoretical constructs integrated in these interventions have not been tested as mediators of change. The European Fans in Training (EuroFIT) programme used motivational strategies from Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to promote health behaviour change in overweight male soccer fans (n = 1113; mean age of 45.9 [SD = 9.0] years old and mean BMI of 33.2 kg/m2 [SD = 4.6]) across 15 professional soccer club settings in the UK, Portugal, Norway and the Netherlands. A causal mediation analysis of the randomised controlled trial (RCT) of EuroFIT examining indirect effects of autonomous motivation, controlled motivation or amotivation on objectively measured and self-reported PA at 12-months follow-up for men who participated in the trial was undertaken. We also tested whether the men’s identification towards their soccer club moderated the mediating effects of these forms of motivation on PA. We found that autonomous motivation had a small indirect effect on objectively measured (b = .164, 95% CI: [.033, .303], p = .010) and self-reported PA (b = .285, 95% CI: [.089, .488], p = <.001) in men at 12-months follow-up, however, these effects were non-significant when controlling for increases in PA at post-programme and were not robust to residual mediator-outcome confounding. We found some evidence that men’s identification towards their club moderated the mediating effect of autonomous motivation on objective PA, but not self-reported PA. This represents preliminary evidence that men’s club identification can influence the relation between a key construct in SDT and sustained PA

    Determinants of IPO overpricing

    This paper outlines the phenomenon of negative first-day IPO returns. Using a comprehensive sample of IPOs in the United States between 2000 and 2020, we find that 21.61% exhibit negative first-day returns, making this a common feature of the US IPO market. The key findings show that the IPO mechanism is important. A larger deal size and proportion of over-allotment shares reduces the probability of IPO overpricing, while downward offer price adjustments increase the likelihood of negative first-day returns. Despite distinct differences, the analysis reveals shared characteristics between IPO underpricing and overpricing, providing nuanced insights into IPO pricing. Neither market timing nor agency issues significantly affect IPO overpricing

    An efficient and general automated power amplifier design method based on surrogate model assisted hybrid optimization technique

    In layout-level optimization-oriented power amplifier (PA) design, the need for a good quality initial design and the high computational cost of electromagnetic (EM) simulations are remaining challenges. To address these challenges, a new method called efficient and general Bayesian neural network (BNN)-assisted hybrid optimization algorithm for PA design (E-GASPAD), is proposed. The key innovations of E-GASPAD include the introduction of BNN to model the PA design landscape and a new hybrid optimization algorithm co-working with BNN prediction for efficient PA design optimization. The performance of E-GASPAD is demonstrated by a 27–31 GHz class-AB PA and a 24–31 GHz wideband Doherty PA. Considering around 30 design variables with wide search ranges, the complete set of PA performance specifications, and full-wave EM simulations, layout-level high-performance designs are obtained automatically within a few hundred simulations (i.e., less than 72 h)

    Enhancing Covid-19 vaccine acceptance within Scotland’s Black, African and Caribbean communities and lessons for future vaccination programmes

    This study highlights how the intersection of multiple factors shapes the experiences of Scotland’s Black, African, and Caribbean communities in their access and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in the vaccination programme’s first, second, and booster stages. There was particular interest in understanding the vaccination journey, from scheduling an appointment to attending the appointment. Data in this study was collected between the 1 and 30 April 2022 using a triangulated approach, including a survey (with 408 responses), interviews (26), and focus group discussions (5 groups involving 30 participants). The study shows that 62% of respondents found scheduling a COVID-19 appointment easy, with less than 1% of respondents indicating that the process was complex. Online booking, appointment letters, and walk-in appointments were the most common ways of securing vaccination appointments. Letter appointments, specifically the blue envelope, were beneficial reminder mechanisms. It also provided information about COVID-19 vaccines and what to expect when attending the appointments. Other forms of securing vaccination appointments, such as through GP surgeries, were less commonly used. Around 21.5% of participants felt that receiving an appointment letter provided useful pre-vaccination information and a helpful reminder for their appointment. The accessibility of the vaccination centre, professionalism of the staff, and friendly approach enhanced the vaccine user access, use, and experience of COVID-19 vaccination

    Collider-Flavour Complementarity from the bottom to the top

    Motivated by recently observed anomalies in the flavour sector, we analyse the potential of measurements of top quarks at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to provide complementary constraints on interactions that shape low-energy precision investigations in the B sector. The measurement of top quark properties, such as the top width and the abundant top pair production channels, are already reaching the percent level at this relatively early stage of the LHC phenomenology program. A focused analysis of four-fermion interactions, employing effective field theory without flavour structure assumptions and incorporating renormalization group evolution effects, bridges B meson scale phenomena with key top quark measurements. We demonstrate that the LHC is increasingly competitive with, and complementary to, flavour physics constraints. Our results, which include a f irst comprehensive analysis of non-leptonic B decays in this context, suggest that the LHC’s top physics program could serve as a valuable, complementary tool in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model within the flavour sector

    Progress in multi-electron sodium vanadium phosphate cathode for emerging sodium-ion batteries

    Sodium vanadium phosphate (NVP) has emerged as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its three-dimensional (3D) Sodium Super Ionic Conductor (NASICON) framework, which enables rapid sodium ion (Na+) diffusion, impressive thermal stability, and high theoretical energy density. However, the commercialization of NVP-based batteries faces challenges due to the large ionic radius of sodium (Na), which limits its electrical conductivity and structural stability. Advanced strategies have been developed to overcome these limitations, including integrating carbonaceous materials, targeted ion doping, nanosizing, and manipulating the shape and structure of NVP particles. Despite progress in Na+ migration pathways, synthesis, engineering, and electronic/ionic mobility improvements, an essential aspect of NVP is lacking, such as scalability, recycling, and electrolyte compatibility necessary for the commercial deployment of NVP-based sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). This review aims to fill this gap by comprehensively investigating these obstacles to delimit NVP-based SIBs. Moreover, a comparative analysis with lithium iron phosphate (LFP), a benchmark material in commercial LIBs, highlights NVP’s potential advantages in cost, safety, and Na availability. However, challenges in energy density and scalability remain. By evaluating the relationships between these factors and electrochemical performance, this review provides a comprehensive understanding of NVP-based batteries and identifies opportunities for further improvement
