    Smooth recovery: comparing urethral and suprapubic catheter drainage after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy

    Objective: This study evaluates and compares Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) regarding patient satisfaction with urethral catheterisation (UC) and suprapubic catheterisation (SPC) post-robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Methods: A prospective study was conducted at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital from January 2023 to March 2024 on patients undergoing RARP. Patients received either a UC or SPC, with each surgeon exclusively using one method. A patient preference questionnaire assessed comfort, ease of care, and the quality of pre-/post-operative information. Scoring was based on a visual analogue scale (1–10), categorised as very good (1–3), ok (4–7), or very poor (8–10). Demographic and body mass index (BMI) data were collected. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square tests. Results: A total of 204 patients were included, with 102 receiving UC and 102 SPC. Discomfort levels differed significantly between groups, with 37.3% of UC patients reporting ‘very good’ comfort versus 87% of SPC patients (p < 0.001). SPC patients also reported significantly higher convenience in care (95.1% versus 63.7% for UC, p < 0.001). Catheter-associated urinary tract infections were minimal (2% for both groups), while 4% of UC patients presented to the emergency department with blocked catheters. Conclusion: SPC improves patient experience post-RARP. Further research is needed on long-term outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and early continence recovery. Level of evidence: Not applicable

    Joint prediction of intention and trajectory in automated driving using Interactive Dynamic Bayesian Network

    The prediction of surrounding vehicles' lanechanging intentions and trajectories is critical to the decisionmaking of autonomous vehicles. However, the precise trajectory prediction is challenging because of uncertainties in human intentions and complexities in vehicle interaction. To address these challenges, a new framework for joint prediction of vehicle intention and trajectory is proposed in this paper. The Interactive Dynamic Bayesian Network (IDBN) and the Transformer are used to establish the connections among vehicle interaction, lanechanging intentions and trajectories. Initially, the intentions of the surrounding vehicle and subject vehicle are modeled as nodes within the IDBN. The IDBN simulates the interaction of intentions and predicts the lane-changing intention of the surrounding vehicle. Subsequently, the lane-changing intention probabilities are fused by the Transformer to predict the future trajectories of surrounding vehicle. Validation of the proposed algorithm is performed using the NGSIM dataset. The results demonstrate that the average intention prediction accuracy of the IDBN is improved by 4.22% over the Non-Interactive Dynamic Bayesian Network. Among four existing models, the IDBN exhibits the best performance. Compared to the Transformer without intention fusion, the root mean square error of the intention fusion Transformer decreases by 5.61%-10.8%. The study significantly advances the prediction and decision-making in automated driving, and therefore greatly promotes the transportation safety and automobile intelligence

    Generative artificial intelligence in education: (what) are we thinking?

    Debates linking generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) to knowledge work have become increasingly popular, with discussions of technological innovation and information production efficiency central to the justification of its integration in education contexts. Questions are however raised about the intellectual capacities that these technologies appear to replace or provide, with a special emphasis placed on the activity of thinking, an element so essential to a contemplative life. Inspired by Arendt’s preoccupation with society’s state of ‘thoughtlessness’ and Freire’s critical pedagogy, this article explores how the role of thinking is impacted by the introduction of Gen-AI in education. Via these theoretical engagements, we argue that the presence of Gen-AI in education can have serious consequences for the intellectual development of individuals and that working towards a culture of learning that responsibilises thinking, also as a form of intellectual honesty, is key to preserving individuals’ thinking agency

    Angular analysis of B0 → K*0e+e− decays

    An angular analysis of B0→ K*0e+e− decays is presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. The analysis is performed in the region of the dilepton invariant mass squared of 1.1–6.0 GeV2/c4. In addition, a test of lepton flavour universality is performed by comparing the obtained angular observables with those measured in B0→ K*0μ+μ− decays. In general, the angular observables are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations as well as with global analyses of other b → sℓ+ℓ− processes, where ℓ is either a muon or an electron. No sign of lepton-flavour-violating effects is observed

    Exploring the impact on emotional wellbeing of having a spouse or cohabiting partner with elevated Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores: secondary analysis of cross-sectional health survey data

    Background/Aims: To conduct an exploratory analysis of the association between the mental health and emotional wellbeing of an individual and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores of their spouse or cohabiting partner. Design: Observational study using two sources of secondary data: the Health Survey for England (HSE) and the Scottish Health Survey (SHeS). Data from 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017 (SHeS only) and 2018 (HSE only) were combined to create a single data set. The data contained household identifiers and a household grid, allowing cohabiting couples to be identified. Setting: England and Scotland. Participants: 20 752 individuals (in 10 376 couples) where both partners had completed the PGSI. Measurements: Outcome measures were four self-reported measures of emotional wellbeing: a binary measure indicating a long-term mental health condition, a scale question on life satisfaction, the twelve-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Health and Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS). Gambling harms were measured using the PGSI. Controls included socio-demographic/economic characteristics, and a binary variable indicating whether the individual had spent money in the last 12 months on gambling. Findings: Regression models showed a statistically significant association between lower emotional wellbeing, measured by WEMWBS [Coef. 0.022; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.004–0.040], GHQ-12 Likert scale (Coef. 0.021; 95% CI = 0.000–0.043) and life satisfaction (Coef. 0.036; 95% CI = 0.005–0.067), among individuals who themselves had a PGSI score of zero but whose partner had elevated PGSI scores, when controlling for the individual's own gambling participation and other socio-demographic household and individual characteristics. There was no evidence of an effect between partner's PGSI score and an increased likelihood of a long-term mental health condition amongst the same group. Conclusions: Decrements to an individual's emotional wellbeing appear to be strongly associated with increased Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) scores among their spouse/cohabiting partner, with an individual's emotional wellbeing declining as their partner's PGSI score increases
